You May See A ‘payment Status Not Available’ Message

Why you’re having trouble seeing the status of your stimulus check

Don’t be alarmed if the Get My Payment tool gives you a message that says “Payment Status Not Available.” You may see this message until your payment is processed, according to the IRS. So you may not have to do anything.

But it could also mean you’re not eligible for a payment. So you may want to double-check your eligibility and plug your numbers in our stimulus check calculator to see whether you’re due money.

Getting Your Stimulus Payment If You Have Recently Changed Address

To start using the Get My Payment tool, you will be asked a series of questions to verify your identity for security reasons. You will be able to log into the Get My Payment tool for a maximum of five times within a period of 24 hours. If you have recently moved home, you will need to update your address with the IRS this can be done in several ways:

By filling in Form 8822 and sending it by mail to the address shown on the form

In writing, the IRS will need to know your full name, old and new addresses, social security number, individual taxpayer identification number, or employer identification number the letter will also require your signature

Avoid Processing Delays When Claiming The 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit

The IRS strongly encourages people to have all the information they need to file an accurate return to avoid processing delays. If the return includes errors or is incomplete, it may require further review while the IRS corrects the error, which may slow the tax refund.

To claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, individuals will need to know the total amount of their third-round Economic Impact Payment, including any Plus-Up Payments, they received. People can view the total amount of their third-round Economic Impact Payments through their individual Online Account. The IRS will also send Letter 6475 through March to those who were issued third-round payments confirming the total amount for tax year 2021. For married individuals filing a joint return with their spouse, each spouse will need to log into their own Online Account or review their own letter for their portion of their couple’s total payment.

The IRS urges recipients of stimulus payments to carefully review their tax return before filing. Having this payment information available while preparing the tax return will help individuals determine if they are eligible to claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit for missing third-round stimulus payments. If eligible for the credit, they must file a 2021 tax return. Using the total amount of the third payments from the individual’s online account or Letter 6475 when filing a tax return can reduce errors and avoid delays in processing while the IRS corrects the tax return.

Although the IRS Wheres My Refund? tool will generally show one of the three main statuses Received, Approved or Sent for your refund, there are a wide variety of messages and notices that some users may see.

One of the most common is Tax Topic 152, a generic message indicating that youre likely getting a refund, but it hasnt been approved or sent yet. The notice simply links out to an informational topic page on the IRS FAQ website explaining the types and timing of tax refunds.

During the 2022 tax season, many Reddit tax filers who filed early received the Tax Topic 152 notice from the Wheres My Refund? tool accompanied by a worrisome message: We apologize, but your return processing has been delayed beyond the normal timeframe. You can continue to check back here for the most up to date information regarding your refund. We understand your tax refund is very important and we are working to process your return as quickly as possible.

The purported delay could be an automated message designed for taxpayers claiming the child tax credit or earned income tax credit. Due to additional fraud protection steps, the earliest filers with those credits can receive their refunds will be March 1. Several Reddit users commented that the message eventually cleared and they received notifications their refunds were sent.

The FAQ on the IRS stimulus FAQ www.irs.gov/coronavirus/economic-impact-payment-information-center website states: The IRS is aware that in some instances a portion of the payment sent to a spouse who filed an injured spouse claim with his or her 2019 tax return has been offset by the non-injured spouses past-due child support.
