Can I Still Sign Up For A New Direct Express Account

You can sign up for a new Direct Express account at any time to receive monthly federal benefits electronically, but if you don’t currently have an account, you’ll receive your third stimulus check a different way, likely .

If you closed your Direct Express account or there’s an error sending money to an inactive account, the payment will be returned to the IRS, which will reissue the stimulus money another way — probably via mail sent to your last known address. When Will Social Security Recipients Get $1,400 Stimulus Check? IRS to ...

For some disability recipients who have representative payees, the IRS deposited the first stimulus payment into the representative payee’s bank account or sent the payee a check. But since the stimulus money isn’t a Social Security or SSI benefit, the representative payee is not responsible for managing it. Disability recipients who want to use the money on their own were instructed to ask their payees for it.

Similarly, some disability lawyers reported receiving first stimulus payments that were meant for former clients whom the lawyers helped get disability benefits. Lawyers who received the money erroneously were instructed to reverse the direct deposits to the IRS. The Treasury Department was expected to fix this error for the second stimulus payment.

Scammers claiming to be from the Treasury Department or the IRS have been calling, texting, and emailing disability recipients, asking for personal financial information or for a fee to expedite your stimulus payment.     If you or your clients legally changed your name, you need to tell us so we can send a corrected card. You cannot request to change your name via Social Securitys online services.

    TTo change your name on your card, you must show us documents that prove your legal name change and identity. You also must show us a document that proves your U.S. citizenship, if it is not already in our records. You must present original documents or copies certified by the agency that issued them.     What If I’m An Undocumented Us Resident Or Don’t Have A Social Security Number Do I Still Qualify For A Third Stimulus Check

    If you’re a “nonresident alien,” you weren’t eligible for a first or second stimulus check. The government defines a nonresident alien as someone who “has not passed the green card test or the substantial presence test.” If you don’t have a valid Social Security number, you likely weren’t eligible for a first or second stimulus payment. If you filed a US tax return but don’t have a Social Security number, you still weren’t eligible.

    For the third check, if you are a nonresident alien but are in a mixed-status family — where at least one member has a Social Security number — you are eligible for a payment.

    I Receive Social Security Benefits What Do I Need To Know About My Third Stimulus Payment

    If you receive Social Security SSI or SSDI benefits, your check should have arrived or be on the way by now. Here are the details:

    • Many who receive Social Security payments and most SSI and SSDI recipients and retired railroad workers will qualify to receive a stimulus check Tens of millions have already received theirs.
    • You should have received your payment around April 7 if you have direct deposit set up or were sent a Direct Express card.
    • Recipients of veterans’ benefits should have received their stimulus money on if they don’t usually file taxes.
    • If you used the Non-Filers tool in 2020 and didn’t have a change in life circumstances, you may receive a check automatically as part of the ongoing stimulus payment batch. Going forward, your money could arrive as a paper check.
    • You may also need to file a 2020 tax form to claim your dependents for the third stimulus check.
    • The government says it will conduct outreach letting taxpayers know if they’re eligible for any funds and offering help if needed.
    • Any missing payment amount from the third check may be paid out as part of tax season 2021 , a year from now. You’ll likely have to file a tax return to claim it, if the IRS follows the same pattern for missing stimulus check money as now .
