What Should I Do If I Havent Filed My Return Yet But Want To Claim The Waiver

IRS offers tool to check stimulus payment status

The IRS issued instructions for those who havent filed a return yet, but want to claim the waiver of $10,200 on unemployment insurance.

For those who havent filed yet, the IRS will provide a worksheet for paper filers and work with software industry to update current tax software so that taxpayers can determine how to report their unemployment income on their 2020 tax return, the IRS said.

The IRS is currently accepting federal returns with the new waiver for those who havent filed yet. Depending on your tax company, that function may or may not be available due to software upgrades needed, according to Steber. Jackson Hewitt has made all the changes under the new rule, he added.

TurboTax and H& R Block updated their online software to account for the new tax break on jobless benefits received in 2020.

IR-2020-280, December 29, 2020

WASHINGTON Today, the Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury Department will begin delivering a second round of Economic Impact Payments as part of the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 to millions of Americans who received the first round of payments earlier this year.

The initial direct deposit payments may begin arriving as early as tonight for some and will continue into next week. Paper checks will begin to be mailed tomorrow, Wednesday, December 30.

Where’s My My Refund And Why Is It Taking So Long

Your refund could be delayed if your return contains errors, if it’s not complete, if you incorrectly calculated the Recovery Rebate Credit or if there’s a fraud issue. Your refund may also get caught up in processing at your bank, depending on its weekend and holiday schedules.

Looking to speed things up? IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said in a news release that “filing electronically with direct deposit is the quickest way to get refunds, and it can help some taxpayers more quickly receive any remaining stimulus payments they may be entitled to.”

If it’s been more than three weeks since you e-filed your 2020 tax return and you still haven’t received anything, or if the “Where’s My Refund” tool tells you to contact the IRS, you can call 800-829-1040. The phone lines are open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time.

We Received Your Return And May Require Further Review This May Result In Your New York State Return Taking Longer To Process Than Your Federal Return No Further Information Is Available At This Time

Once we receive your return and begin to process it, our automated processing system scans it for any errors or signs of fraud. Depending on the result of that scan, we may need to manually review it. This status may update to processing again, or you may receive a request for additional information. Your return may remain in this stage for an extended period of time to allow us to review. Once you return to the processing stage, your return may be selected for additional review before completing processing.

What If You Have Trouble With The Tool

To use the Get My Payment tool, you must first verify your identity by answering security questions. If the information you enter does not match IRS records, you will receive an error message. To avoid this:

  • Double-check the information requested
  • Make sure what you enter is accurate
  • Try entering your street address in a different way and
  • Use the US Postal Services ZIP Lookup tool to look up the standard version of your address, and enter it into exactly as it appears on file with the Postal Service.

If your answers do not match the IRS records three times, youll be locked out of Get My Payment for security reasons. If that happens, you must wait 24 hours and try again. If you cant verify your identity, you wont be able to use Get My Payment. Unfortunately, theres no fix for that: the IRS says not to not contact them.

However, if you verified your identity and received Payment Status Not Available, this means that the IRS cannot determine your eligibility for a payment right now. There are several reasons this could happen, including:

  • You didnt file either a 2018 or 2019 tax return or
  • Your recently filed return has not been fully processed.

Again, the IRS says theres no fix for that and you should not contact them.

If You Miss Out This Year

Irs Stimulus Check Amount Is Wrong

If you receive no $1,400 payment or a reduced check, but your income changes, you may be able to claim the money you are due when you file your taxes next year.

Any change, either a slight reduction in earnings or even just putting more money in a traditional IRA or a 401 could yield a much bigger total payment when they do their 2021 taxes, said Garrett Watson, senior policy analyst at the Tax Foundation.

Theres a subset of folks who will be in that situation, Watson said.

That also goes for this years tax-filing season for people who missed out on the previous $1,200 or $600 payments. You can claim a recovery rebate credit to recoup any money you were possibly owed. This is also available to people who typically do not file tax returns because their income is too low.

What Will The Portal Tell You

The Get My Payment tool will tell you:

  • Payment date
  • Payment method Note: mail means you may be issued an EIP Card or a check

If your payment status is not available, that means the IRS has not yet processed your payment, or you are not eligible for a payment.

If you get a message that says Need More Information, that means your payment was returned to the IRS because the post office was unable to deliver it. The IRS said people who got this message will eventually be able to use the tool to provide additional bank account information.

What Will The Status Report Look Like

For third-round stimulus checks, the “Get My Payment” tool will display one of the following:

1. Payment Status. If you get this message, a payment has been issued. The status page will show a payment date, payment method , and account information if paid by direct deposit. Note that “mail” means either a paper check or a debit card. If you don’t recognize the bank account number displayed in the tool, it doesn’t necessarily mean your deposit was made to the wrong account or that there’s a fraud. If you don’t recognize the account number, it may be an issue related to how information is displayed in the tool tied to temporary accounts used for refund loans/banking products.

2. Need More Information. This message is displayed if your 2020 return was processed but the IRS doesn’t have bank account information for you and your payment has not been issued yet. It could also mean your payment was returned to the IRS by the Post Office as undeliverable. As mentioned above, if your payment is returned, you’ll have the opportunity to provide the IRS your bank account or debit card information so they can issue a direct deposit payment . If you don’t provide any account information, the IRS can’t reissue your payment until they receive an updated address.

The portal is updated no more than once daily, typically overnight. As a result, there’s no reason to check the portal more than once per day.

Why Was Tax Day Extended To May 17

IRS stimulus check status tracker is now online | Here’s what you need to know

The IRS pushed back the tax filing deadline by a month to Monday, May 17 instead of Thursday, April 15. The agency is dealing with staffing issues and outdated IT systems at a time when its also implementing sweeping tax code changes from the COVID-19 relief packages.

Last year, the 2019 tax deadline was extended three months until July 15, 2020, without penalties and interest, because of the massive economic shutdowns that went into place to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

How To Track Tax Refunds

The IRS has a “Where’s My Refund” tool on its website and mobile app, IRS2Go. You can use it starting 24 hours after you e-file your return. If you file a paper return, you’ll have to wait four weeks before you can check the status of your refund.

To track your refund, you’ll need to know your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, your filing status and the amount you’re expecting. The tool should return one of three statuses: “return received,” “refund approved” or “refund sent.” The information typically refreshes every night.

Can You Use The Portal If You Didnt File A Tax Return

You couldnt use the Get My Payment tool to track the status of your first stimulus check if you didnt file a 2018 or 2019 federal income tax return. However, there was another online tool that non-filers could use to give the IRS with the information it needed to process a payment.

The non-filers tool wasnt used for second stimulus checks, though. Instead, if you didnt file a 2019 tax return, and you didnt use the non-filers tool to get your first-round payment, then you have to wait to claim your second stimulus check money as a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2020 return.

The IRS is not using the non-filers tool for third-round stimulus checks, either. As a result, if you dont file a 2019 or 2020 tax return, youll have to claim any money youre owed as a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2021 return, which you wont file until next year. However, you can avoid having to wait until next year by filing a 2020 return before the May 17, 2021, deadline.

Stimulus Checks Could Be Seized To Cover Past Due Debt

If you owe child support or other debts, your first check was seized to cover those debts. The third check is subject to being taken by private debt collectors, but not the state or federal government. The same goes for the second payment, too, if youre claiming missing money in a recovery rebate credit. You may receive a notice from the Bureau of the Fiscal Service or your bank if either of these scenarios happens.

In the case of the third check, we recommend calling your bank to confirm the garnishment request from creditors and ask for details about how long you have to file a request with a local court to stop the garnishment. If you think money has already been mistakenly seized from the first two checks, you can file a recovery rebate credit as part of your 2020 tax return but only if you filed a tax extension.

You can track down your stimulus payment without picking up the phone.

How To Use Irs Get My Payment

The IRS also updated frequently asked questions Saturday on how to use the Get My Payment tool, which requires users to enter their full Social Security number or tax ID number, date of birth, street address and ZIP code.

But before you start entering your information hourly, the IRS says the tool updates once per day, usually overnight and that people should not call the IRS. Our phone assistors dont have information beyond whats available on IRS.gov.

The tool will show the status of when a payment has been issued and the payment date for direct deposit or mail, according to the frequently asked questions. Some will get a message that says Payment Status Not Available.

If you get this message, either we have not yet processed your payment, or you are not eligible for a payment, the IRS said. We will continue to send the 2021 Economic Impact Payment to eligible individuals throughout 2021.

And others will get a Need More Information message when using the tool if the payment was returned to the IRS because the post office was unable to deliver it for another reason.

If your address has changed the IRS says the easiest way to update is to file your 2020 tax return with your current address, if you havent already done so. Once we receive your current address, we will reissue your payment.

Child Tax Credit: December End

Some families received another form of stimulus aid when the IRS in July deposited the first of six monthly cash payments into bank accounts of parents who qualify for the Child Tax Credit . Families on average received $423 in their first CTC payment, according to an analysis of Census data from the left-leaning advocacy group Economic Security Project.

Eligible families received up to $1,800 in cash through December, with the money parceled out in equal installments over the six months from July through December. The aid was due to the expanded CTC, which is part of President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan.

Families who qualify received $300 per month for each child under 6 and $250 for children between 6 to 17 years old. Several families that spoke to CBS MoneyWatch said the extra money would go toward child care, back-to-school supplies and other essentials.

While progressives and some Democrats urged lawmakers to continue the enhanced CTC, it appears stalled at the moment. That means families won’t receive a CTC payment in January or beyond.

How Come My Payment Is Showing Up Early Or In Provisional Status

IRS stimulus check status tracker is now online | Here’s what you need to know

This is normal given that the processing/start date of the given payment batch and payment could be a few days apart. Generally the payment date is 5 days after the processing date, so the payment is classified as provisional until the official payment date. That is why many eligible recipients see the direct deposit stimulus payments as pending or as provisional payments in their accounts before the official payment date.
