After you enter your Social Security number, birth-date and address, youll get a message regarding your stimulus check.
The message will tell you one of four things:
- Your stimulus check has been scheduled to be deposited into your bank account

- Your payment is still in process
- The IRS cannot determine your eligibility for payment at this time
You may need to contact the IRS if you need more information, but expect a long phone wait if you do.
When Could My Stimulus Check Arrive

The American Rescue Plan Act became law ahead of the deadline, when the previous $300 federal unemployment benefit bonus expired. The IRS, which had twice distributed stimulus checks, started the process again immediately. And people noted economic impact payment deposits in their bank accounts within days. Those early recipients tended to be people who had bank accounts on file and submitted recent tax returns.
The President has stated that roughly 85 percent of Americans will ultimately receive money. Over 75 percent of the direct payment money in the recent package has already been distributed. In general, direct deposits arrived more quickly. Paper checks and debit cards, which have to be mailed, can take weeks. At least that was the case for the previous two payments.
Payments go out in large batches. The legislation says the government technically has until the end of 2021 to distribute the money. For most people, it wont take nearly that long.
The IRS has a helpful tool called Get My Payment to track the status of your stimulus check.

Federal Benefit Payments Automatic No Action For Most
Most Social Security retirement and disability beneficiaries, railroad retirees and recipients of veterans benefits who are eligible for an Economic Impact Payment do not need to take any action to receive a payment. These payments will be automatic. Like the previous Economic Impact Payments, Social Security and other federal beneficiaries will generally receive this third payment the same way that they receive their regular benefits.
Some federal benefit recipients may need to file a 2020 tax return, even if they don’t usually file, to provide information the IRS needs to send payments for any qualified dependent. Eligible individuals in this group should file a 2020 tax return to be considered for an additional payment for their qualified dependent as quickly as possible.
Closed Bank Account Stimulus Check Deposits

The IRS has confirmed that if it attempts to use direct deposit but an account is closed, the bank will reject the deposit, and the IRS will mail you a paper check with the address it has on file for you. However, paper checks may take weeks longer to arrive than direct deposits. Regardless of how the IRS sends your stimulus payment, it will also send a letter to the mailing address it has on file for you to let you know how the payment was made and how to report any failure to receive the payment, according to its website.
While there was some flexibility to update bank accounts for the first stimulus payment, the second stimulus payment has to be paid out by mid-January 2021 so existing bank account information is being used. If you dont get your stimulus check by direct deposit, check or debit card by February the IRS is recommending you claim the stimulus payment via your 2020 tax return.

What Information Will You Need
To access the tool, youll be asked to provide a:
- Social Security Number or Individual Tax ID Number
- Date of birth
- Street address and
- Five-digit ZIP or postal code.
If you file a joint tax return, either spouse can typically access the portal by providing their own information for the security questions used to verify a taxpayers identity. Once verified, the same payment status is shown for both spouses. In some cases, however, married couples who file a joint tax return may get their third stimulus payment as two separate payments half may come as a direct deposit and the other half will be mailed to the address the IRS has on file. If that case, each spouse should check the Get My Payment tool separately using their own Social Security number to see the status of their payments.
If you submit information that doesnt match the IRSs records three times within a 24-hour period, youll be locked out of the portal for 24 hours . Youll also be locked out if youve already accessed the system five times within a 24-hour period. Dont contact the IRS if youre shut out. Instead, just wait 24 hours and try again.

Additional Information On Get My Payment
The IRS reassures taxpayers who do not recognize the bank account number displayed in the Get My Payment tool that deposits were not made to the wrong account this is not an indicator of fraud. Second Stimulus Check: How You Can Track When Youll Get Your Payment
The $600 stimulus checks that are going out to millions of people can now be individually tracked through the IRSGet My Paymentwebsite, which reopened on Monday afternoon. The site informs people about the date of their payment and whether they will receive it via direct deposit or the mailed payment date.
Still, there are some glitches that are delaying the payments of the stimulus money and creating confusion and questions for consumers. Chief among them: Some people who had their 2020 tax returns filed through tax preparers like H& R Block may have had their stimulus check sent directly to the tax firm, rather than their bank account.
This echoes a glitch that impacted payment of the first stimulus check for some people who used tax prep services and for whom the IRS didnt have direct-deposit information. With the second round of stimulus checks, a similar issue may impact some people, with H& R Block warning its customers who used a service called a refund transfer that they might see an account number you dont recognize on the Get My Payment website. Refund transfers are offered to allow people to tap their refund to pay their tax prep fees, according to H& R Block.
As many as 13 million people may experience a delay in receiving their money after the IRS sent the funds to closed or invalid bank accounts, according to tax-prep company Jackson Hewitt.

Its not perfect, but USPSs Informed Delivery tool really does work
As anecdotal evidence of mail theft grows in the US in recent weeks, were all probably being a little more careful about collecting our mail in a timely manner as we await for important things to arrive, like an envelope from the IRS . And while the IRS isnt making any sort of direct mail tracking of stimulus checks available, you can at least get a heads up on the day your check will arrive using this handy tool from USPS. Its not infallible, and it wont get every single letter, but its about the only way you can get any sort of advanced knowledge your check will be hitting your mailbox soon.
USPS Informed Delivery isnt a new thing, and has been available in some parts of the US since 2014. But many remain unaware that the tool exists, and that regardless of whether or not youre using it, the post office takes a picture of every letter envelope mailed to you. This practice has been in effect for years, and is part of USPSs critical mail sorting system, Mail Sorting and Isolation. So, you may as well have the information the post office does about your mail.

Will The Irs Reload A Prior Pre
Some people who received one or both of their first two stimulus payments on a pre-paid debit card may wonder if the IRS will reload that card with the $1,400 for the latest round of payments. The answer is no, the IRS says.
If the IRS now has bank account information for you, it will send the money via direct deposit. If not, it will either issue a check or a pre-paid debit card, but the latter will come in the form of a new card, the tax agency said.
People should look for a white envelope with the return address Economic Impact Payment Card accompanied by a U.S. Treasury Department seal. The card says Visa on the front, and the issuing bank, MetaBank, on the back.
