You May Miss Future Child Tax Credit Payments

The new child tax credit payments are going out monthly to eligible parents through December — you can calculate your payment here. If you don’t have direct deposit set up with the IRS, your payments will likely arrive as paper checks. And if you’re still waiting for a child tax credit check and you qualify for the money, a wrong address could be the problem. You can track your payment or file a payment trace to see if it went to the wrong address.

However, if you’ve moved recently and you haven’t updated your information with the IRS or USPS, it’s likely your money could wind up at your old address, potentially causing a delay as you wait for your check to be rerouted. You can now update your mailing address using the Child Tax Credit Update Portal to make sure your payments are being sent to the right place.

What Happens If Your Bank Account Info Is Out Of Date

If your most recent tax return provided the IRS with bank account info so your refund could be direct deposited, the IRS has no way of knowing you dont use that account anymore. The agency will still deposit the money there.

If the account is no longer open, your bank should have rejected the funds transfer. The IRS will be notified the payment didnt go through and it will switch to sending you a paper check instead of trying to deposit your funds.

The paper check will go to the most recent address the IRS has on file, which could be a problem if its an old address. Unfortunately, it could also take a really long time for your money to come even if your address is correct. The IRS has indicated paper checks will start going out the week of April 20, but only at a rate of about 5 million per week and staggered based on adjusted gross income ranges . With the number of checks the IRS has to send out, the agency doesnt expect to be finished until August.

If the old bank account is still open, the money will be deposited into it. You will need to figure out how to try to access the money from the bank. Contacting the bank directly is your best course of action. However, you could have a problem if you had unpaid overdraft fees or if debt collectors had a levy on the old account, as its possible those you owe could seize the stimulus funds.

So You Can Finally Get That Missing Stimulus Check

Stimulus checks went out last year as fresh payments, or plus-up payments if the IRS owed you more than it already paid. These payments were sent through the end of 2021. Some states even sent more stimulus checks that you wouldn’t have received if your address isn’t updated.

Also, if you’re missing stimulus money, the process to claim it is tied up with your tax return. If you get a tax refund this year and you don’t sign up for direct deposit, you’ll receive your funds as a paper check from the US Treasury and that may go to an old address. But even if you do have a direct deposit account on file with the government, you may still receive a stimulus check as a paper check or EIP card. This IRS tracking tool can help tell you how you’ll get your stimulus money. Once the IRS processes your payment, the final say in how you receive the money is up to the IRS and the Treasury.

You’ll also want to make sure you get the IRS letter verifying when it sent your payment. This is important for anyone who may be eligible for a stimulus check but who experiences an unexpected holdup receiving their money. This IRS notice will be your ticket to settling any errors or submitting a claim for missing money during tax season this year, if it comes down to that.

How To Notify The Irs Of A Change Of Address Online

The IRS doesnt currently offer a universal option for changing your address online. As noted above, theyre very cautious about the potential for identity theft. Automated online identity verification isnt as secure as a personalized approach.

Still, there are exceptions to every rule. If the IRS mailed you a refund check and it got returned to them, you may have the option to update your address online.

The IRS offers an online Wheres My Refund? tool that allows you to search for your refund status. Youll need to plug in the following information:

  • Your SSN or ITIN
  • Your filing status
  • The exact amount of your expected refund

Once youve done that, you may be given the option to change your address online. If not, you will need to call the IRS, write in, or visit a TAC in person.
