Here’s more on how to set up and use the letter-tracking service from the USPS to keep tabs on your payment.
What’s The First Step To Take
First, you need to log into the Internal Revenue Services Get My Payment tool.
Youll be able to find out when the IRS sent out your check, how much it should be, how it’ll be paid if there’s a delay and more.
To use it, youll need your Social Security Number or Individual Tax ID Number .
If you’ve forgotten your SSN or need a new card, see how you can get a replacement on the official SSN website.
Youll also need to enter your date of birth and address.

If your third stimulus check hasn’t arrived yet, you’re likely becoming concerned about what’s happened to it. But don’t get too worried yet — start by checking your bank account because it may have a pending deposit.Iit’s also possible the check is stuck en route in the mail. Once you figure out your payment status, you may find that you’re owed a “plus-up” supplemental payment if the IRS didn’t send you enough stimulus money.
However, there could be information you need to act on if that’s the case, the IRS online tracking tool will let you know. It’ll also show if you need to file a payment trace for that missing third check. The tool isn’t perfect, but it’s a great way to learn your payment status. It won’t tell you how much money to expect — not everyone gets $1,400 — but you can use our stimulus calculator to estimate that amount.
In mid-July, the IRS will begin disbursing advance child tax credit checks for up to $300 a month for those eligible — you can use this separate calculator for that. Are Adult Dependents Getting Third Stimulus Checks
The new stimulus plan expands eligibility to adult dependents, including college students, elderly relatives and disabled adults.
The text of the plan redefines the term dependent according to section 152 of the tax code, which includes both qualifying children and adults: Section 152 provides that the term dependent means a qualifying child ) or a qualifying relative ).
While the plan pays out $1,400 for each qualifying dependent, families should keep in mind that the targeted lower income ranges exclude them if they earn over $160,000.
For reference, the second stimulus checks provided additional $600 payments for qualifying dependents under the age of 17. So a couple filing jointly with three eligible children could get a maximum second payment of $3,000 .
Under the first and second rounds of stimulus checks, children and adult dependents over the age limit could not get an additional payment, and they did not qualify for a stimulus check of their own either.
With the new stimulus plan, however, both joint filers and heads of household get an additional $1,400 payment for each dependent, regardless of age. The table below breaks down the third stimulus checks for heads of household with one dependent:
|Stimulus Checks for Heads of Household & 1 Dependent|
|$120,000 and up||$0|

Why Is There A Need More Information Message
Based on the first two checks, you may see an error if the tool cant determine your eligibility or if youre completely ineligible, if your payment status isnt available or if a lot of people are trying to access the tool at once .
If the Get My Payment tool gives you a payment date but you still havent received your money, the IRS may need more details from you. The error could also indicate that your check has been returned because the post office was unable to deliver it.
After the IRS starts sending checks, the online tool may let you enter your banking information to receive your payment straight to your bank account, as it did with the first payment, or it may hold your payment until it receives a current mailing address.
What The Online Get My Payment Tool Can’t Tell You
The IRS tool won’t give you hourly updates — the status information is updated once daily — nor will it tell you how much stimulus money you’re getting or provide details on the first two stimulus checks approved in 2020. You won’t find steps for what to do if you run into payment problems.
The IRS doesn’t want you to call if you have payment trouble. The agency says its representatives don’t have information beyond what’s shown in the tool. Here’s what we recommend doing to address a stimulus issue.
Another way to find out more info on your third payment is to create an IRS account online. If you are sent a plus-up payment after your 2020 tax return is processed, you should see the amount of your plus-up payment with your online account.

Tracking Your $1400 Stimulus Check: Getting A Payment Status Update Using The Irs Tracker
It is frustrating if you still havent received your stimulus check. But the IRS tracker can help you stay updated. The information in it could help you to finally track it down. But the facts in the tracker are not complete though it helps you get an idea of where you stand and what steps you need to take.
The IRS has already dispatched more than 164 million payments totaling about $386 billion. This included many plus-up payments that are a follow-up to the original stimulus check. And if you are not among the beneficiaries, you need to immediately follow up.
Check Before You Initiate A Search For Your Stimulus Check
It takes anything between 5 days and 6 weeks for a payment to arrive, depending on the mode of payment. If it has been sent through a direct deposit, it should take around 5 days for your account to get credited.
So check your bank for any pending deposits, the stage before an account is finally credited, before initiating any action. The same goes for a paper check or a prepaid debit card that comes in through the US postal service. It takes anywhere between 4 to 6 weeks for a snail mail to finally reach you.
Given the sheer amount of payments being sent through the postal service, the delay is justified. The USPS has its free tool to keep track of their mail. It should give you regular updates if any payment has been sent through them.

- If the IRS sends your payment based on a 2019 return and then your 2020 return says you qualify for more , they will send an additional payment to make up for the difference. To get the additional payment, you must file the 2020 tax return by 90 days from the filing deadline or September 1, 2021, whichever is earlier.

What Is A Plus
A plus-up supplemental payment is a new or larger payment you may be eligible to get if you recently submitted your 2020 tax return and your income or number of dependents changed.
For example, if you received a partial third stimulus payment based on your 2019 income, but your income declined in 2020, you may receive another payment to make up the difference between the two amounts. Your original third stimulus payment and your plus-up payment together will equal the amount youre eligible to receive based on your 2020 tax return.
On April 1, the IRS announced that new payment batches include supplemental payments for these people. As of late June 9, more than 8 million plus-up payments have been issued.

THE third round of stimulus checks were sent out by the government this month to help those in need during the pandemic.
The Internal Revenue Services Get My Payment tool can help people track where their payments are coming from and how theyre being sent.
The IRS and US Treasury said last week that more than $442million worth of checks are on the move with more payments coming through the postal service in the coming weeks.
Over 90million stimulus payments have been sent out via direct deposit to Americans, while over 150,000 paper checks have been mailed out.
People eligible for the third stimulus payment have been told to keep an eye out for the envelope containing the money, either as a paper check or an EIP debit card.
Recipients can track the $1,400 payment directly to their mailbox using the IRS stimulus check tracker tool which also contains information about your payment schedule, when the check will arrive and how as well as letting you know if there has been an error processing your payment.
It doesnt though give you an exact date when you can expect the payment though.

If The First Two Stimulus Payments Never Showed Up Do This
The IRS is no longer automatically sending out the first and second payments that were approved in 2020. If you believe you’re still owed money from either of those payment rounds, your best chance of claiming those funds is to file for the Recovery Rebate Credit as part of the 2020 tax season.
If you’re eligible, you’ll need to know the amount of money the IRS allotted you, which you can find out online or from the letter the agency mailed. The IRS said the updated Get My Payment tracker won’t give you information on the first and second checks. Instead, you need to set up and check your IRS account for information on those payments.
Why Can’t I Get On The Get My Payment Site
The IRS said this can happen if people don’t provide security answers that match the tax agency’s information over the course of several attempts to log in. The IRS asks for personal information such as a Social Security number, birthdate and address.
“If you can’t verify your identity, you won’t be able to use Get My Payment,” the IRS said. “Don’t contact the IRS for assistance with a lockout IRS assisters can’t unlock your account.”
However, the site will allow you to try again after 24 hours.

My Payment Tool Is Not Available What Should I Do
If you did not receive any stimulus payment or you were missing one installment, then you should use my payment tool on the official website of the Internal Revenue Service. But, recently, the government announced that they are going to disconnect the tool. So, if you have any issue related to your stimulus payment, you can use an online IRS account, or you can use Recovery rebate credit.
My Third Stimulus Payment Was Too Low
Many individuals and families will find that their third stimulus checks are lower than they thought. That could be because people who make over a certain amount have part of the $1,400 payment taken away. For example, single people who make over $75,000 in adjusted gross income will have their second stimulus checks reduced by 28% of the income over $75,000. Married people filing jointly and heads of household will have their payments reduced by a similar amount.
The third stimulus payment is technically based on your 2021 income, but the IRS is using your 2020 tax return to estimate it. If your income goes down in 2021, making you eligible for a payment, or a higher payment, youll be able to file a tax return for your 2021 taxes and youll receive the stimulus money you didnt getâits called a recovery rebate credit.

About 15 days after the IRS sends your third stimulus check , you should get a letter from the agency confirming your payment. The IRS is still sending these letters for the third payment.
If you received this letter — also called Notice 1444, Your Economic Impact Payment — but you never got your payment, you’ll need to request a payment trace. Make sure you keep the letter because you’ll need the information to file your claim. The same is true for the first and second stimulus checks as well.

Can Your Stimulus Check Be Garnished
In most cases, No. Most individuals and families should receive a stimulus payment, even if you owe back taxes or other debts to the government or creditors. Ohio law also protects your stimulus check from being garnished by creditors and private debt collectors.
If you owe back child support, the CARES Act allowed a reduction or offset to your first stimulus payment for back child support. However, your second and third stimulus payments can’t be garnished for back child support.
Still Don’t Have A Stimulus Check Here’s How To Track Yours
May 12, 2021 / 3:35 PM / MoneyWatch
While major banks in the U.S. started delivering $1,400 stimulus checks in March, the federal relief payments continue to arrive at millions of households struggling to make ends meet amid the coronavirus-hobbled economy.
The Internal Revenue Service has delivered more than 165 million payments, with a total value of approximately $388 billion, the agency said Wednesday. The latest round includes 1 million payments, with the IRS noting they have an official payment date of May 12. That means the most recent recipients will receive a direct deposit on Wednesday, or soon get a paper check or pre-paid debit card in the mail.
The timing and delivery of checks has been a cause of anxiety for some people, especially for those who receive government benefits such as Social Security and don’t typically file taxes. The IRS prioritized sending checks to people who have already filed their 2019 or 2020 tax returns, since the agency was able to quickly verify eligibility based on income and also determine where to mail or direct deposit the checks.
The agency said it’s sending another 500,000 payments to eligible people who recently filed a tax return but for whom it didn’t previously have information to issue a stimulus check.
