Will I Receive A Stimulus Check If I Receive Social Security Is There Anything Special I Need To Do

How Can I Qualify for That $1,400 Stimulus Check?

If you receive Social Security benefits you are eligible to receive a stimulus check even if you do not file an income tax return. The IRS will use the information that the Social Security Administration has on file to determine your eligibility. No other action is needed.

If you normally receive your social security benefits directly in your bank, you will receive the stimulus check the same way. Others will receive a check in the mail. SSA will not consider economic impact payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

If you did not file a tax return for 2018, 2019 or 2020 and you have qualifying children under the age of 17, you should go to this IRSs webpage to enter your information so that you receive payment for yourself and qualifying children. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about you and your qualifying children, you will also receive the $1,400 per dependent in addition to your $1,400 individual payment.

A $3600 Tax Credit This Year

Some recipients, however, decided that for whatever reason they didnt need or want the six monthly checks upfront. In that case, theyre getting the child tax credit instead as a lump-sum benefit this year.

As a reminder, for every child under the age of 6, a family could get an expanded child tax credit of as much as $3,600. Meaning, if those families decided to forgo the monthly checks? They can still get that $3,600 this year as a tax credit, never mind that the Senate has still not acted to re-up the monthly payments this year.

The same is true, by the way, if any families eligible for the lower tier of the expanded child tax credit choose a lump-sum benefit this year. They could get up to $3,000, if they, too, decided to forgo the monthly payments last year.

With the ruling, over two million incarcerated people in the U.S. may now be eligible for the $1,200 stimulus payment. However, those eligible need to act quickly to claim and receive their payment in 2020.

You can file a paper application as well. Visit this page for instructions on how to file the claim. A point to note is that those filing a claim online need to fill out line 9 of the form as well. Filling out this line is not required in the case of paper submissions.

How Will You Receive Your Payment

The majority of payments will be sent via direct deposit. The IRS states that those who do not receive their stimulus payments as direct deposit will likely receive it as a mailed check.

Payment may also be sent as a prepaid debit card, as known as an EIP card. If payment is issued as a debit card, you will receive a new debit card, even if you had a previous EIP card. The new payment will not be added to an EIP card from a previous stimulus payment.

Make sure to keep a close eye on your mail over the coming weeks to ensure your check or EIP card is not lost in your junk mail. If your mailbox is not secure, the IRS recommends that you check it regularly.

If you receive Social Security or another federal benefit, you will generally receive your payment in the same method those payments are received. The IRS has not yet announced when these payments will be sent, but estimates that information will be available shortly.

The Act also expands the Child Tax Credit for American families in the US and overseas. During his campaign for office, President Bidens tax plan has proposed raising the Child Tax Credit and making it fully refundablewhich is exactly what this legislation does.

When Your Stimulus Checks Are Arriving

The Emergency Broadband Benefit program is part of the COVID-19 stimulus package, which was approved in December last year. The primary objective of the program is to save families from losing access to an essential resource during the pandemic.

Under the program, eligible recipients get up to $50 off per month on broadband service and associated equipment rentals. Also, the program gives a discount of up to $75 per month on broadband service for homes on qualifying tribal lands, as well as a one-time discount of up to $100 on a laptop, tablet or desktop computer.

A point to note is that the benefit under the program is limited to one monthly broadband service discount, as well as one hardware purchase discount per family.

However, you need to hurry up to avail yourself of these benefits as the deadline to apply for the program is Friday, December 31. If you register for the program on or before December 31, you will be able to enjoy the above benefits until March 1, 2022.

A new program, called the Affordable Connectivity Program, will replace the Emergency Broadband Benefit program once it ends. This new program is part of the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill, which President Biden approved last month. Not many details are known on the new program, but it is expected to reduce the maximum discount on internet for most families.
