Havent Received 2nd Stimulus Check? Here Are 4 Reasons Why

Starting in late January, the IRS began sending out information via what it dubs Letter 6475. Its something for taxpayers to watch out for, Steber says. At the top of the letter, which the IRS says it will send through March, youll see the words Your Third Economic Impact Payment. The letter, which the agency did not send out last year, provides details about the total amount you received in third-round stimulus payments in 2021 and includes all payments, even if they were issued at separate times.

Keep in mind that the third-round EIPs were advance payments of the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit. This letter will help Economic Impact Payment recipients determine if they are entitled to and should claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns when they file in 2022, the IRS announced in a.

  • You can also call the Vermont 2-1-1 hotline and follow the menu options for tax preparation. Through this service you may be able to schedule an appointment with a free Volunteer Income Tax Preparation Assistance site. These sites are staffed by trained volunteers. They provide free preparation services to taxpayers who meet eligibility requirements.

You Make Too Much Money

You wont get a third stimulus check at all if your income is too high. Every eligible American starts with a $1,400 third stimulus check base amount. The base amount goes up to $2,800 for married couples filing a joint tax return. Then, for each dependent in your family, an extra $1,400 will be added to the base amount.

However, everyone wont get the full amount. As with the first two stimulus payments, third-round stimulus checks will be phased-out for people with an adjusted gross income above a certain amount on their 2019 or 2020 tax return. If you filed your most recent tax return as a single filer, your third stimulus check will be phased-out if your AGI is $75,000 or more. That threshold increases to $112,500 for head-of-household filers, and to $150,000 for married couples filing a joint return.

Third-round stimulus checks are reduced to zero pretty quickly. They are completely phased out for single filers with an AGI above $80,000, head-of-household filers with an AGI over $120,000, and joint filers with an AGI exceeding $160,000.

Not everyone is eligible for a third stimulus check. In a nutshell, you generally dont qualify for a third-round payment if:

  • You could be claimed as a dependent on someone elses tax return
  • You dont have a Social Security number or
  • Youre a nonresident alien.

If the IRS determines that youre not eligible for a third-round stimulus check, then you wont get one.

Will I Get An Economic Impact Payment

If you meet the following four requirements, you likely qualify for the stimulus.

1. Income Limits: If you are filing as single with an adjusted gross income up to $75,000, married filing jointly with an AGI up to $150,000, or head of household with an AGI up to $112,500, you will receive the full payment. Above these income limits, the payment amount decreases 5 percent for every additional $100 of income up to $99,000 for a single adult, $136,500 for head of household, and $198,000 for a married couple.

If you have zero income you can still get the payment.

2. Age requirements: There is no age requirement for the stimulus check, however you cannot be someone elses dependent. Children must be under 17 to get the additional payment for them.

3. Taxpayer Identification Number :At least one tax filer must have a valid Social Security number . If you are married filing jointly, and one spouse has an SSN and one has an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number , the spouse with an SSN and any children with SSNs or an Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number can get the payment. If one spouse is an active member of the military, then both spouses are eligible for a stimulus check even if only one spouse has an SSN and the other spouse has an ITIN.

4. Citizenship or Residency: You must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or qualifying resident alien.

Reasons Why You Havent Received Your $1400 Stimulus Check

If you see that youre indeed eligible for the stimulus money, there are several reasons why you are still waiting. In no particular order, here are the top five.

Since President Joe Bidens American Rescue Plan was signed into law in early March, the Internal Revenue Service has worked tirelessly to send out a hundred twenty-seven million coronavirus relief checks that could potentially be a lifesaver for many financially struggling Americans.

Despite that success, know that there are millions of Americans who are still sitting empty-handed, wondering daily if their stimulus check will ever arrive.

If youre one of those unlucky individuals, take note that fewer Americans will receive checks this time around, so make sure to confirm if you even qualify. Individuals who earn as much as $75,000 in adjusted gross income , or couples making $150,000in addition to their children or adult dependentsqualify for the full $1,400 per individual.

Moreover, single parents with at least one dependent who earn $112,500 or less also get the full amount. Families in which some members have different citizenship and immigration classifications are eligible for a payment, if at least one person has a Social Security number.

The payments, however, phase out much more quickly than in previous roundsan individual with an income of $80,000, or a couple with $160,000, will not be receiving any check.

How To Get Your Stimulus Checks If You Still Haven’t Received Payment

While Congress considers whether to issue a fourth round of stimulus checks, some people haven’t received their older checks.

The first and second stimulus check amounts were for $1,200 and $600, respectively. The third was for $1,400. Here’s how to get your stimulus checks if you haven’t received them yet.

Firstly, some people haven’t received checks because not everyone qualifies for them. You aren’t eligible if your previous IRS tax filings show that you’re a single person who makes over $75,000 annually, a head of household who makes over $112,500 annually, or a married couple who jointly reports over $150,000 annually.

Some are also ineligible due to restrictions on age and dependent status. If someone claimed you as a dependent in their previous tax returns and you were 17 years old or older on January 1, 2020, then you weren’t eligible for the first two checks, according to CNBC.

The IRS and the Social Security Administration have also said that people may not have received stimulus checks because they didn’t file their 2020 taxes. They urged them to file for 2019 and 2020 even if they’re not legally required, in order to ensure that all eligible people receive their payments.

Even if you owe the IRS money, you should still receive your stimulus checks or the aforementioned 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit. The IRS won’t withhold those funds.

Those with dependents under age 17 should use the non-filer website by September 30th to receive the $500 dependent payment this year. Check The Irs Website

If youâve checked the eligibility requirements and believe you should have received the stimulus payment, you can use the Get My Payment tool on the IRS website to check on the status. Youâll need to enter your:

  • Social Security Number

  • Zip code

After confirming your identity, youâll see you when your money is being sent and if it will be arriving as a check, direct deposit, or debit card. If the payment has already been sent, youâll be provided with details like the date it was sent and the method.

The âGet My Paymentâ tool is updated once per day, so thereâs no need to check multiple times in the same day.

The Irs Is Sending Out The Stimulus Checks In Batches

The IRS has a juggling act as it distributes these stimulus checks at the height of tax season. IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig promised in a news release that the multitasking wouldnt slow the delivery of relief payments he said were needed by millions of Americans to cope with this historic pandemic.

But even with IRS employees working around the clock, getting the stimulus checks out is a huge task for the tax agency. So, its splitting the aid payments into batches.

The first batch of direct deposits started arriving last weekend and included 90 million payments worth more than $242 billion, the IRS says in a news release. Another batch was to go out this week, with more to follow in the coming weeks.
