What Information Will You Need

To access the tool, you’ll be asked to provide a:

  • Social Security Number or Individual Tax ID Number
  • Date of birth
  • Street address and
  • Five-digit ZIP or postal code.

If you file a joint tax return, either spouse can typically access the portal by providing their own information for the security questions used to verify a taxpayer’s identity. Once verified, the same payment status is shown for both spouses. In some cases, however, married couples who file a joint tax return may get their third stimulus payment as two separate payments half may come as a direct deposit and the other half will be mailed to the address the IRS has on file. If that case, each spouse should check the “Get My Payment” tool separately using their own Social Security number to see the status of their payments.

If you submit information that doesn’t match the IRS’s records three times within a 24-hour period, you’ll be locked out of the portal for 24 hours . You’ll also be locked out if you’ve already accessed the system five times within a 24-hour period. Don’t contact the IRS if you’re shut out. Instead, just wait 24 hours and try again.

Some Taxpayers Find Relief Payments Sent To Wrong Account

A number of taxpayers who use tax preparation services, such as H& R Block and TurboTax, say their second relief payments were sent to the incorrect bank account, forcing them to wait longer for their money.

Many people have expressed their frustration as they await their second stimulus check. Numerous individuals said that they checked a tool on the Internal Revenue Service website and found their payments were sent to an account they did not recognize.

Samantha Smith of Dallas said she received her $1,200 relief payment in the spring via direct deposit without any issues. But her payment for this round of economic relief went to an account she did not recognize.

Americans can expect to start seeing $600 in their bank accounts as the federal government’s second round of stimulus payments is being sent out, the Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service said.

The first payments started going out on Dec. 29 and will continue to be sent through Jan. 15. But anyone eligible who isn’t automatically sent the money by then will have to claim it on their 2020 tax return, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

Smith contacted TurboTax, which prepared her most recent tax filing, and was told if she paid her tax preparation fees with her refund due, rather than paying for it upfront, then the second payment may have been sent to a TurboTax bank. Several other taxpayers who paid their fees the same way also reported delays.

The Irs Has An Online Tool That Lets You Track The Status Of Your Third Stimulus Check

The IRS has already delivered over 100 million third stimulus checks. But if you’re still asking yourself “where’s my stimulus check,” the IRS has an online portal that lets you track your payment. It’s called the “Get My Payment” tool, and it’s an updated version of the popular tool Americans used to track the status of their first- and second-round stimulus checks.

Note that you can’t check the status of your first- or second-round stimulus payments with the updated tool. To find the amounts of these payments, create an online IRS account or refer to IRS Notices 1444 and 1444-B, which the IRS mailed after first- and second-round stimulus checks were issued. If you didn’t get an earlier payment, or your received less than the full amount, you might be able to get what you’re owed by claiming the Recovery Rebate credit on your 2020 tax return. Third-round stimulus payments aren’t used to calculate the 2020 Recovery Rebate credit, but they will be used to figure the credit amount on your 2021 tax return.

The updated “Get My Payment” tool more-or-less works the same way as the portal used for first- and second-round stimulus checks. But here’s a refresher course on what the tool does, what information you need to provide, and what information the tool gives you. Check it out now so you know what to expect before entering the portal on the IRS’s website.

Stimulus Check Payment Issues

DON

Several readers have noted that they are seeing their checks getting deposited in the wrong accounts based on the IRS GMP tools payment status. This error was discovered when eligible recipients saw the last four digits of their bank account numbers were incorrect. This same error had occurred with prior stimulus payments and was primarily due to data glitches from third-party tax preparers to the IRS. When this happened with prior payments the IRS had to send the payment via a paper check in the mail, which could take several weeks.

If you dont get your check by the end of April and dont get notice of a paper check you will have to claim the stimulus payment as a recovery rebate credit in your 2021 tax return.

I Didn’t Get A Payment For My Child Why

Parents can also get a payment of $500 for each child, but the money only applies to eligible children, generally those 16 and under. You might not get the payment if someone else can claim them as a dependent or if theyre not reflected on your most recent tax return, such as a newborn child.

People who receive Supplemental Security Income or Department of Veterans Affairs benefits also dont automatically get payments for dependents. They must add that information on the IRS website by Tuesday to get payment.

If you did not receive the full amount to which you believe youre entitled, for a child or otherwise, youll be able to claim the additional amount on your 2020 tax return.

You Get Federal Benefits On A Direct Express Card

Social Security retirement and disability beneficiaries, railroad retirees, and people who received veterans’ benefits in 2020 don’t need to do anything to get the third stimulus check. The IRS is working with those federal agencies to send the payments to beneficiaries the way they normally get paid, provided they haven’t filed a tax return.

If your typical method of payment is a Direct Express card, the “Get My Payment” tool will show a bank account number that’s associated with that card. You might not recognize it, but rest assured the money will be loaded onto your Direct Express card.

If You Dont Recognize The Account

The most common scenario for this problem: Many people who used a tax prep service like H& R Block or TurboTax to get an advance on their refund found their stimulus check was deposited in a bank account they didnt recognize.

Thats because many tax companies give customers early refunds on a prepaid debit card, then set up a temporary bank account where the IRS deposits the refund. While some people in this situation report getting their stimulus checks without an issue, others have discovered that their check was sent to the temporary account.

In this case, the process will probably be the same as it would be if your check were sent to your old account: The refund will be returned to the IRS, and youll get in line for a paper check.

What Is A Plus

Problems With Stimulus Checks: What To Do If Yours Is Deposited In Wrong Account

A plus-up supplemental payment is a new or larger payment you may be eligible to get if you recently submitted your 2020 tax return and your income or number of dependents changed.

For example, if you received a partial third stimulus payment based on your 2019 income, but your income declined in 2020, you may receive another payment to make up the difference between the two amounts. Your original third stimulus payment and your plus-up payment together will equal the amount youre eligible to receive based on your 2020 tax return.

On April 1, the IRS announced that new payment batches include supplemental payments for these people. As of late June 9, more than 8 million plus-up payments have been issued.

I Got A Payment Status Not Available Message

Many checking on their second stimulus check were seeing a message that said “Payment Status #2 – Not Available.” The IRS has indicated that these individuals will not receive a stimulus check by direct deposit or mail and they will have to file their 2020 tax return to claim their “Recovery Rebate Credit.” See below for instructions on claiming the rebate on your tax return.

These messages have now disappeared and will be replaced by information about the third payment.

Where Are The Stimulus Check Trouble Spots

We saw a great deal of frustration and confusion back in the spring and summer, as the federal government rolled out the first stimulus payments. Some people had to wait months on end. And we’re seeing some similar fears.

At the same time, several consumers said Tuesday that they personally did not have any trouble receiving the first stimulus payments in 2019 but they’re now facing some type of blip with the second payments now.

Just because things ran smoothly for you the first time apparently doesn’t mean you’re going to easily get the second stimulus.

Several readers emailed me Tuesday morning to tell me about a variety of problems that they’re facing now.

One huge issue: Many said the IRS site indicated that their Economic Impact Payment was deposited Monday into a bank account that isn’t theirs.

One reader said: “For me, my first check went to my bank account and the second shows an account I do not know.”

Another said the stimulus “appeared” in his bank account but disappeared somehow and his bank had no answers.

Some H& R Block customers in particular are upset about payments not ending up in their own bank accounts.

Some who are complaining used H& R Block for tax preparation services and had the fees withheld from their refund money. In the past, that process led to a glitch and some consumers had to wait to receive a stimulus check.

It is true that some people will get a reduced payment or no payment now.

Closed Bank Account Stimulus Check Deposits

The IRS has confirmed that if it attempts to use direct deposit but an account is closed, the bank will reject the deposit, and the IRS will mail you a paper check with the address it has on file for you. However, paper checks may take weeks longer to arrive than direct deposits. Regardless of how the IRS sends your stimulus payment, it will also send a letter to the mailing address it has on file for you to let you know how the payment was made and how to report any failure to receive the payment, according to its website.

While there was some flexibility to update bank accounts for the first stimulus payment, the second stimulus payment has to be paid out by mid-January 2021 so existing bank account information is being used. If you dont get your stimulus check by direct deposit, check or debit card by February the IRS is recommending you claim the stimulus payment via your 2020 tax return.

WHERES MY STIMULUS CHECK? Qanon

If the Get My Payment tool tells you your check will be direct-deposited, it will also provide the last four digits of the number of the bank account into which your stimulus payment will be deposited. For the initial checks, some individuals saw that their deposit was going to an old bank account, or they even saw bank account numbers that they didn’t recognize. Here’s what to do:

  • If the tool says that your payment was deposited into your bank account but you haven’t seen it yet, your bank may still be processing it.
  • You won’t necessarily get the third check direct deposited, even if the first or second one was direct deposited.
  • If your third stimulus payment is sent to a closed bank account, the bank is required to transfer the money back to the IRS. The IRS will not redeposit it to you or mail you a paper check. Instead, you will have to file your 2021 tax return to claim your “Recovery Rebate Credit.” See below for instructions on claiming the rebate on your tax return.
  • If H& R Block submitted your last tax return and you signed up for a “refund transfer,” the IRS might deposit your stimulus payment with H& R Block . H& R Block should transfer the money to your bank account within 24 hours.
  • Those who submitted their last tax return with Turbo Tax should receive their payments in the same bank accounts through which they received their tax refunds.

Check with your dependent to find out if theyve already filed a tax return since their dependent status ended. They may have already received a stimulus payment of their own. If they have not filed their own tax return and you receive a larger payment that accounts for your former dependent, you dont need to return it.
