Special Reminder For Those Who Don’t Normally File A Tax Return
People who don’t normally file a tax return and don’t receive federal benefits may qualify for these Economic Impact Payments. This includes those experiencing homelessness, the rural poor, and others. For those eligible individuals who didn’t get a first or second Economic Impact Payment or got less than the full amounts, they may be eligible for the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit, but they’ll need to file a 2020 tax return. How Does The Irs Know Who Gets A Check

- For households who have already filed their income tax return for 2020, the IRS will use that information to determine eligibility and size of payments.

The IRS said the updated Get My Payment tracker will not give you information on the first and second checks. You May See A ‘need More Information’ Message
According to the IRS FAQ, a Need More Information message in the Get My Payment tool means your payment was returned because the US Postal Service wasn’t able to deliver it.
The FAQ says you’ll be able to have your payment reissued as a direct deposit by providing a bank routing and account number, a prepaid debit card or a financial service account that has a routing and account number associated with it. The FAQ says you can also update your mailing address to receive your payment.
How Can You Request An Irs Trace For Missing Stimulus Money
To request a payment trace, call the IRS at 800-919-9835 or mail or fax a completed Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund . Note: If you call the number, you’ll have to listen through the recorded content before you can connect with an agent.
To complete Form 3911 for your third stimulus check, the IRS provides the following instructions:
1. Write “EIP3” on the top of the form
2. Complete the form answering all refund questions as they relate to your payment.
3. When completing item 7 under Section 1:
- Check the box for “Individual” as the Type ofreturn.
- Enter “2021” as the TaxPeriod.
- Do not write anything for the DateFiled.
- Sign the form. If you’re married and filing together, both spouses must sign the form.
You should not mail Form 3911 if you’ve already requested a trace by phone. And the IRS said you should not request a payment trace to determine if you were eligible to get a check or confirm the amount you should have received.

What If I Didnt Get The Right Amount
Some people may get their checks quickly, yet discover that the payment amount is incorrect that could most likely be due to their dependents or changes in income.
The law provides $1,400 per adult and dependent, as long as the household income falls below the income threshold for eligibility. Based on the first two checks, you may see an error if the tool cant determine your eligibility or if youre completely ineligible, if your payment status isnt available or if a lot of people are trying to access the tool at once .
If the Get My Payment tool gives you a payment date but you still havent received your money, the IRS may need more details from you. The error could also indicate that your check has been returned because the post office was unable to deliver it.
After the IRS starts sending checks, the online tool may let you enter your banking information to receive your payment straight to your bank account, as it did with the first payment, or it may hold your payment until it receives a current mailing address.

This might have happened because the information you entered didnt match IRS records, or youve tried to access the site more than five times in 24 hours.

What Can The Irs Do For A Missing Stimulus Check
The IRS will do the following to process your claim, according to its website:
- If you didn’t cash the check, the IRS will issue a replacement. If you discover the original check among your belongings, you’re expected to return it as soon as possible.
