You May See A ‘payment Status Not Available’ Message
Don’t be alarmed if the Get My Payment tool gives you a message that says “Payment Status Not Available.” You may see this message until your payment is processed, according to the IRS. So you may not have to do anything.
But it could also mean you’re not eligible for a payment. So you may want to double-check your eligibility and plug your numbers in our stimulus check calculator to see whether you’re due money.
What Should You Do If You Havent Gotten Your First Check
While many are searching for evidence of their second stimulus checks, some people havent even received their first. The IRS continued to make these payments until Dec. 31, 2020, but if you still dont receive one, or dont receive the full amount, youll want to claim it via the Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2020 taxes.
Request A Payment Trace
After you receive your stimulus payment, you should also get a notice from the IRS in the mail which says the amount you were paid. If you receive this notice, but havent gotten your stimulus payment, its possible that it was lost or stolen.
In this case, you can start a trace by contacting the IRS. If the check wasnt cashed, youll receive a replacement, and if it was cashed, you will have to file a claim with the Bureau of the Fiscal Service youll receive instructions on how to do this. Keep in mind that you need to wait until a certain amount of time has passed to start a trace, like four weeks if the payment was mailed, or six weeks if it was mailed but you have a forwarding address on file with your post office.

Is My Second Stimulus Check Taxable
The IRS does not consider stimulus checks taxable income. This means that you do not have to report them on your tax return or pay income taxes on either check.
Eligible recipients who did not get the first or second stimulus checks can claim a recovery rebate credit to increase their tax refund or lower their tax liability. So if you are expecting to get money back on your 2020 tax return, your refund could get a big boost depending on how much stimulus money the government owes you.
And comparatively, if you expect to owe taxes on your 2020 return, then you can use your recovery rebate credit to offset your tax bill and get a refund for the remaining amount.
Many taxpayers this year are looking to their tax refunds to get extra money for their finances. For reference, the average tax refund in 2020 was more than $2,500. The IRS expects over 150 million tax returns to be filed this year.
The 2021 tax season will begin on February 12. And taxpayers will need to file their 2020 returns by April 15.

Get My Payment Portal
If you are wondering about the status of your Second Stimulus check or payment, then the Get My Payment tool of the IRS would be of great help to you. This tool can be considered as an updated version of the IRS tool that was used to track the status of your First Stimulus Check payment.
The Get My Payment Portal would help obtain the below-mentioned information.
How To Track Your Second Stimulus Payment
The Internal Revenue Service is urging people to track their stimulus check online rather than calling the agency.
The IRS and the Treasury Department began issuing a second round of Economic Impact Payments, often referred to as stimulus payments, last week. Some people received their money before the scheduled payment date of January 4 while others are still refreshing their accounts.
According to the IRS, paper checks have also started going out and will continue to be sent through January. Some people will also be mailed debit cards, so keep an eye out for your mail.
To check the status of your payment you can use the Get My Payment tool, available in English and Spanish.

How Much Will The Payment Be
According to the IRS, eligible recipients will receive:
- Individuals earning up to $75,000 will receive $600
- Payment of $600 for dependent children
These amounts are subject to income limits. Lawmakers are determining the eligibility of senior dependents claimed on an adult childs tax return. Please consult the IRS Questions and Answers for more information on eligibility.
What Does The Stimulus Check Portal Do
The updated “Get My Payment” tool lets you:
- Check the status of your stimulus payment
- Confirm your payment type and
- Get a projected direct deposit or paper check delivery date .
For first-round stimulus payments, you could also use the portal to enter or change your bank account information to have your payment directly deposited into your account. However, that feature isn’t included in the current tool . The IRS already has bank account information for millions of Americans from recent tax returns, tax payments, the original “Get My Payment” tool, the non-filers tool used last year, other federal agencies that regularly send out benefit payments , and federal records of recent payments to or from the government. So, the tax agency is generally limiting direct deposit payments to bank accounts that they already have on file. As a result, you can’t change your bank information using the “Get My Payment” tool.
If your payment isn’t deposited directly into your bank account, then you’ll get either a paper check or a debit card in the mail . You could also receive a payment by mail if your bank rejected a direct deposit. This could happen because the bank information was incorrect or the bank account on file with the IRS has since been closed.

Will You Get A Second Stimulus Check If You Got The First One
Because the second stimulus check passed by Congress is half the size of the first check, not everyone who got a payment in the spring will get money this time around.
If your 2019 reported income was $75,000 or less, under the current plan you would be eligible to receive the full $600 one-time payment. Couples who reported an adjusted gross income up to $150,000 would receive $1,200.
If you reported making more than $75,000, you would receive partial payments dropping by $5 for every $100 above the income limits.
So an individual who earned $86,900, for example, would get $5 under Congress’ approved plan. During the first round of direct money, the money phased out at $99,000 for a single filer.
If you’re a couple making $174,000 or more, or a head of household making more than $124,500, you also won’t get a second stimulus check.
What If I Am Not Required To File A Tax Return Can I Still Track My Stimulus Check

To use the Get My Payment tool to check the payment status of your stimulus check, the IRS needs enough information to verify your identity. The IRS may be unable to verify your identity if:
- You didnt file an income tax return
- You didnt use the IRSs Non-Filers tool by November 21, 2020 to register for a payment or
- You receive federal benefits and the IRS doesnt have enough information.

My Third Stimulus Payment Was Too Low
Many individuals and families will find that their third stimulus checks are lower than they thought. That could be because people who make over a certain amount have part of the $1,400 payment taken away. For example, single people who make over $75,000 in adjusted gross income will have their second stimulus checks reduced by 28% of the income over $75,000. Married people filing jointly and heads of household will have their payments reduced by a similar amount.
The third stimulus payment is technically based on your 2021 income, but the IRS is using your 2020 tax return to estimate it. If your income goes down in 2021, making you eligible for a payment, or a higher payment, you’ll be able to file a tax return for your 2021 taxes and you’ll receive the stimulus money you didn’t getâit’s called a recovery rebate credit.
H& r Block Turbotax Problems
Intuit’s TurboTax on Tuesday also tweeted that some customers were having problems receiving their stimulus checks. “The IRS announced yesterday that due to the speed at which they issued this second round of payments, they sent some payments to an account that may be closed or no longer active,” the tax-prep service said.
The IRS said checks sent to closed or inactive accounts can’t by law be held by the financial institutions and redirected to consumers. Instead the funds will be returned to the IRS, and people who didn’t receive a check must wait until they file their 2020 tax returns to get the stimulus money in a refund. Because of that, it’s likely that those customers will face a delay.
Some customers responded on social media that they had panicked after failing to receive their funds as expected, with some expressing concern they had been a victim of fraud.
Meanwhile, the IRS said on Monday that the direct deposits could take “several days” to post to individual accounts after the official payment day of January 4. It added that some people may see their stimulus checks listed as pending or as provisional payments in their accounts.

Who’s Eligible For The Stimulus Check
THERE is certain criteria that must be met in order to claim your second stimulus check.
You could be entitled to a payment if the following is true:
- You are not a dependent of another taxpayer
- You have a Social Security number valid for employment
Your adjusted gross income must also not exceed:
- $150,000 if married and filing a joint return
- $112,500 if filing as head of household or
- $75,000 for single applicants
For earnings above this amount, payments will shrink by $5 for every $100 earned.
It means they will be phased out completely at $87,000 for individuals and $174,000 for couples filing jointly.
Children under 17 years old will also receive the same $600 payment as adults, but “child dependents” who are 17 years old will not.
It will tell you how much your total second stimulus check should be, how it’ll be paid, if there’s a delay, and more.
If your check has been issued, the Get My Payment tool will also show you the date it was sent.
To use to the tool, you’ll need to add your Social Security number or individual taxpayer identification number and date of birth.
You also need to provide your street address as well as the ZIP or postal code.
If you receive the message “payment status not available” once you’ve verified your identity, this is usually due to two common reasons.
It may be because you didn’t file a 2019 tax return, or you did file and your return hasn’t been processed yet.
