The stimulus checks are based upon the annual gross income of your most recent tax return. For most people this will be their 2019 tax return. Normally, the filing deadline is April 15 however, this year it has been extended until July 15. If you have not filed your taxes for 2019 yet, the amount will be determined from your 2018 tax return.
Keep in mind that you are still eligible to receive a relief payment even if you are not required to file a tax return. Recipients of Social Security or disability income, veterans, and Railroad retirees also get an Economic Impact Payment. If you have submitted all the proper paperwork to receive your benefits, your stimulus check will be calculated and automatically deposited by the IRS. If you are not part of these groups that receive federal benefits, you can register with the Non-Filer tool at IRS.gov to receive your check.
The form of payment depends on how you chose to receive your past refunds. The IRS sent the first round of stimulus checks to those who included their banking information for direct deposits. If you did not include your account information, you will likely be receiving your stimulus check in the mail. If your payment still has not arrived, the IRS website has set up a portal to help you track mailed stimulus checks.
You May See A ‘payment Status Not Available’ Message
Don’t be alarmed if the Get My Payment tool gives you a message that says “Payment Status Not Available.” You may see this message until your payment is processed, according to the IRS. So you may not have to do anything.
But it could also mean you’re not eligible for a payment. So you may want to double-check your eligibility and plug your numbers in our stimulus check calculator to see whether you’re due money.
Which Dependents Qualify For A Stimulus Check
Unlike the first and second round of checks, payments for dependents in the third round are not restricted to only children under 17.
According to the IRS website: “Eligible families will get a payment based on all of their qualifying dependents claimed on their return, including older relatives like college students, adults with disabilities, parents and grandparents.”

How Can You Check On The Status Of A Missing Stimulus Payment
It’s easy to check the status of your third stimulus check through the Get My Payment tool. You’ll need to request a payment trace if the IRS portal shows your payment was issued but you haven’t received it within the time frame outlined in the chart above.
To use the tool, you need to plug in your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, date of birth, street address and ZIP or postal code. The portal will show your payment status, if your money has been scheduled and the payment method and date. You might also see a different message or an error.

You may be eligible to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2021 federal tax return if you didnt get a third Economic Impact Payment or got less than the full amount.
In early 2022, well send Letter 6475 to the address we have on file for you confirming the total amount of your third Economic Impact Payment and any plus-up payments you received for tax year 2021. Payment Status Not Available could also mean that the IRS Needs More Information to issue your stimulus payment.
If Needs More Information displays in your results, then your payment was returned because the Postal Service was unable to deliver it. The IRS says this means you were issued a check, rather than your payment being direct deposited into your bank account.
Dont worry, this is an easy fix.
In order to have your payment reissued as a direct deposit, you can update information for a bank account, prepaid debit card, or an alternative financial product that can be associated with a routing and account number.
If you do not provide updated account information, the IRS will not be able to reissue your payment.

So Your Final 2021 Child Tax Credit Payment Isnt Delayed
The enhanced monthly child tax credit payments ended in December you can calculate your payment here. If you didnt have direct deposit set up with the IRS, your payments were likely sent as paper checks. But if youre still waiting for a child tax credit check and you qualify for the money, a wrong address could be the problem. You can track your payment or file a payment trace to see if it went to an incorrect address.
However, if youve moved recently and you havent updated your information with the IRS or USPS, its likely your money couldve been sent to your old address, potentially causing a delay as you wait for your check to be rerouted. I Received A Second Payment But My Spouse Didn’t
There have been cases where a couple submit their tax returns as “married filing jointly,” and both spouses are eligible for a $1,400 stimulus check, but one spouse received a payment and the other did not . This is an error on the IRS’s part. Unfortunately, the spouse who didn’t receive a check will have to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on his or her 2020 tax return. The Irs Doesn’t Have Your Direct Deposit Info

The fastest way to get your stimulus check is via bank direct deposit from the IRS. If the IRS doesn’t have your direct deposit info on file, you can still get paid, but it’ll come via paper check â and getting a check in the mail could delay your payment by weeks or even months. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin told CNN that it was his idea that paper check stimulus payments have President Donald Trump’s signature on them, and that reports saying that the signature would add further delay to the arrival of paper checks is incorrect.
“The checks have not gone out yet,” Mnuchin said to CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday, April 19, “and the reason they have not gone out yet is that we’re hoping that more people, as I said, will go to IRS.gov. It’s much safer to send out direct deposits.”
Most taxpayers provide the IRS with their bank account details, for the purposes of making a payment or receiving a tax refund. If the agency does not have your direct deposit details, you can provide the IRS with that information at the Get My Payment appâ which also lets you track the status of your check. However, the last day to give your direct deposit info to the IRS was May 13 if you missed the deadline, are eligible, and haven’t received your payment already, it will come as a paper check. You can still use the Get My Payment app to reveal how you will receive your payment , and give a scheduled arrival date, if the payment has been processed.

Tracking Your California Stimulus Payment
The majority of eligible Californians will receive their check via a direct deposit into their bank, which should appear between now and October 15. These checks were sent out from September 1.
If you were late submitting your taxes, however, doing so after August 20, you should allow an additional 45 days for your tax return and check to be processed.
Meanwhile, physical checks will start to be sent out from October 4 and will continue until the end of December. The date that you can expect to receive your physical check depends on the last three digits of your zip code.
If your tax return is processed after the date of your scheduled ZIP code payment, allow up to 60 days, said the CFTB.

How To Use Irs ‘get My Payment’
The IRS also updated frequently asked questions Saturday on how to use the “Get My Payment” tool, which requires users to enter their full Social Security number or tax ID number, date of birth, street address and ZIP code.
But before you start entering your information hourly, the IRS says the tool updates once per day, usually overnight and that people should not call the IRS. Our phone assistors don’t have information beyond what’s available on IRS.gov.
The tool will show the status of when a payment has been issued and the payment date for direct deposit or mail, according to the frequently asked questions. Some will get a message that says “Payment Status Not Available.”
“If you get this message, either we have not yet processed your payment, or you are not eligible for a payment,” the IRS said. “We will continue to send the 2021 Economic Impact Payment to eligible individuals throughout 2021.”
And others will get a “Need More Information” message when using the tool if the payment was returned to the IRS because the post office was unable to deliver it for another reason.
If your address has changed the IRS says the easiest way to update is to “file your 2020 tax return with your current address, if you havent already done so. Once we receive your current address, we will reissue your payment.”

How To Track Your Social Security Stimulus Check
Congress passed the CARES Act in late March to alleviate financial consequences to state governments, certain establishments and individuals caused by the new coronavirus pandemic. The legislation was signed into law March 27, and the IRS began issuing payments several weeks later. Payments total up to $1,200 for individuals and $2,400 for married couples depending on income, with additional subsidies offered to those with dependents.
Everyone who still has not received their relief money, including beneficiaries of Social Security programs, can track their payments using an online portal established by the IRS last month. The portal asks CARES Act recipients to enter personal and bank account information before providing details about payment status, like expected date of receipt and method of distribution. Most stimulus funds were deposited into individual bank accounts, with the remainder now being mailed in waves as paper checks.
Last Thursday, the Social Security Administration shared an update regarding stimulus payments to beneficiaries whose funds are usually managed by another person, referred to as a representative payee. The announcement said beneficiaries who reside in the U.S. will receive their checks starting in late May, while beneficiaries in U.S. territories will begin receiving theirs in early June.

Eligible individuals can visit IRS.gov and use the Get My Payment tool to find out the status of their Economic Impact Payment. This tool will show if a payment has been issued and whether the payment was direct deposited or sent by mail.
In certain situations, this tool will also give people the option of providing their bank account information to receive their payment by direct deposit. Information is updated once a day, usually overnight, so there’s no need to check it more than once a day.
The Child Tax Credit In The American Rescue Plan Provides The Largest Child Tax Credit Ever And Historic Relief To The Most Working Families Ever
Normally, tax relief for the year only comes the following year when you file your taxes, no matter how much you need it now. This year, youll start getting the money in July. As of July 15th, most families are automatically receiving monthly payments of $250 or $300 per child without having to take any action.
- For every child 6-17 years old, families will get $250 each month.
- For every child under 6 years old, families will get $300 each month.
- The 80% who get their refunds from the IRS through direct deposit will get these payments in their bank account on the 15th of every month until the end of 2021.

What Happens If You Dont Receive Your Payment Or Only Receive A Partial Amount
If you havent received your payment yet, dont panic, although its easier said than done. Compared with the first round of stimulus checks, the IRS and Treasury Department have significantly shrunk the delivery timeline by weeks, if not months. However, the text of the American Relief Plan still gives both agencies until Dec. 31, 2021, to distribute all funds, meaning the last round of checks might not hit consumers mailboxes until January 2022.
Consider signing up for the U.S. Postal Services informed delivery service, so you know in advance of any mail youll be receiving on a given day. If the IRS says it already mailed your check but you didnt receive one, down the road you might also decide to order a stimulus check payment trace. You can arrange one by calling a hotline at the IRS or submitting a completed Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund by mail or fax. But be prepared: This process can take weeks. The IRS may also ask that you sit tight for the time being in some cases, for a period as long as nine weeks.
