How Informed Delivery Works

Tracking your stimulus check in the mail

Informed Delivery modernizes the mail process by using the USPS’ mail sorting equipment. As letters go through the sorter, it creates a digital image of them, which Informed Delivery then passes on to you.

Once your account is set up, you will get an email every day that mail is delivered if you’ll be receiving any, along with a greyscale image of the letters.

Informed Delivery even has an app for iPhone and Android that will send you notifications about your mail. Cool right?

Who Can Request A Payment Trace

You can track the status of your third stimulus check using the IRS’s “Get My Payment” tool. If you’re getting a stimulus payment , this online tool will let you know how it will be delivered and provide an estimated arrival date.

You can request a payment trace to track your stimulus payment only if the “Get My Payment” tool shows a payment was issued to you and you haven’t received it. Don’t request one merely to determine if you’re eligible for a payment or to confirm the amount of money you should have received.

The USPS service Informed Delivery does not do everything however and has some significant limitations. For one, the service will not work with any business PO boxes. However, most personal PO addresses and residential addresses are fine. Another exclusion would be residential buildings whose every unit has not been identified by the post-service till now.

To know whether the service is available for you, start by going to the Informed Delivery website by the Postal Service. On getting there, press the option to sign up. It is free. After that, enter the mailing address. Here, the service will let you know if it will work at that address. If it does, then accept the conditions and terms and press Continue. After that, you can enter your desired security questions, password, and username. After entering the contact information, press continue.

Finally, the website will try to verify the users identity. Choose to do so online and you will be sent a code for verification on the given entered phone number. Or, you can also choose to receive an invitation code over mail. Then USPS will deliver a code to your mailbox. A third option is available where you can personally turn up at the post office and get your identity verified.

Missing The First Second Or Third Stimulus Check

Certainly, the IRS does not want you to contact them about a missing stimulus check. It is worthwhile to check the IRS’s online portal for updates on your 2021 payment, specifically the third stimulus check. In general, it should notify you when your check will be processed and how you will get it, such as by mail as a paper check.

Meanwhile, if you cannot find the IRS letter for the first or second payment, you will need to create an online profile with the IRS to check your status. Even if you do not generally file a tax return, you may need to issue a payment trace or file for a recovery rebate credit if there are any issues. Per CNET, the deadline for filing taxes without an extension was May 17.

Other Faqs Concerning The Second Stimulus Check

Instead of succumbing to worry and financial stress, here are more things to know about the second stimulus checks:

    • Are dependents eligible for a stimulus check?

The second round of stimulus payments proposed in the COVID-19 relief bill uses the same criteria as the CARES act when it comes to determining the eligibility of a dependent. Adult dependents like college students are not eligible for the second stimulus check. Families with a dependent under the age of 17 years old will get an additional $600 per child.

The IRS also previously reported that deceased citizens, along with trusts and estates, are not eligible. Despite this ruling, a congressional watchdog reported that more than 1 million stimulus checks were sent to deceased individuals.

A major change from the CARES act is the disqualification of households if a member didnt have a Social Security number. Now, households that do not have a Social Security number are eligible for the second stimulus check.

    • What if I do not recognize the bank information on the Get My Payment tool?

If you receive RRB, SSA, VA or SSA benefits via Direct Express, your second stimulus check will be deposited to the respective cards. The bank details show in the tool will be the number linked to your Direct Express card, which may also be an unfamiliar number.

What If The Irs Has The Wrong Bank Account

Unfortunately, the IRS says you can’t change the bank account it has on file for you unless you get the “Need More Information” message. The IRS is initially relying on bank account information that people gave it through a variety of ways: their 2020 tax return, their 2019 tax return if their 2020 return isn’t yet filed, information you gave the IRS on the “Get My Payment” site last year or information you entered through the “Non-filer” portal last year.

It will also tap federal agencies such as the Social Security Administration or Veteran Affairs to get bank account information for people who receive benefits through those agencies.

So what happens if your bank account changed since you provided that information to the IRS? The bad news is you may have a delay in getting your funds but you will eventually get them, the IRS insists. The agency said payments that are sent to accounts that have been closed will be returned to the tax agency. At that point, the IRS will send a payment through paper check or pre-paid debit card to your mailing address.

The Irs Tool Might Say Your Payment Was Sent To You

If the IRS’ online tool says the agency has issued your stimulus money, but you have no record of it in your bank account and it never arrived in your mailbox, you may need to take one of these steps, including possibly filing a stimulus check payment trace. You’ll need to have the letter the IRS sent you.
