Stimulus Check Eligibility: Do You Get One
Stimulus check eligibility depends on how much you earn on the books each year. If you are a U.S. taxpayer that earned less than $75,000 a year according to your most recent tax return, you qualify for the full $1,200 payment.
Note that people on Social Security support dont need to apply for the payment. Unfortunately, in the rush to get out stimulus checks as quickly as possible, some have been sent to people who have died, according to CNN. And the IRS says those payments need to be returned.
Keep in mind that you must file your taxes to quality for the stimulus check. The IRS has extended the usual April 15 deadline to July 15, but the sooner the government has your 2018-2019 tax information the sooner you can get your payment.

Do You Pay Taxes On Your Stimulus Check
The short answer is no, you do not have to pay taxes on your stimulus check.
The stimulus check is recognized a tax credit, therefore it is not considered taxable income. Rather, no matter how much your payment is worth, you can deduct it from the total taxes you owe next year.

State And City Stimulus Checks
Congress has yet to agree on a fourth federal stimulus check, leaving many states to come up with their own programs to help eligible residents.
In California, the Golden State Stimulus II program offers residents over $568million in extra funding through the end of the year.
The program is for residents who have been financially impacted as a result of the pandemic.
Over half a million residents received $285 checks in Maine. In Maryland, qualifying residents can receive a check worth between $300 to $500.

The first round of Economic Income Payments involved the set-up of most of the payment structure, something that included the creation of the Get My Payment tool. This allowed individuals to sign up for a direct deposit – the quickest means of getting a check – and also to track its movements thereafter. Even though the possibility of a higher total amount currently hangs in the balance, when the terms are finally set in stone, the process will be much the same as last time, and the good news is that if you have already claimed the first stimulus check, you shouldn’t have to even claim for the second one. You may be eligible for Child Tax Credit payments even if you have not filed taxes recently. Not everyone is required to file taxes.
This year, Americans were only required to file taxes if they earned $24,800 as a married couple, $18,650 as a Head of Household, or $12,400 as a single filer. If you had total income in 2020 below those levels, you can sign up to receive monthly Child Tax Credit payments using simple tool for non-filers developed by the non-profit Code for America.

When Will You Receive Your Stimulus Payment After You File For A Recovery Rebate Credit
The IRS started processing 2020 tax returns on Feb. 12 but extended the tax deadline to May 17 and focused on sending stimulus checks instead. If you filed for a Recovery Rebate Credit as part of a 2020 tax form and submitted it in February or early March, you can check the status of your tax return and refund to see if it’s been processed. It isn’t certain what the IRS’ revised timeline is for processing tax returns submitted in mid-March and beyond.
If You Are Not Required To File Income Tax Returns For 2019
You are not required to file federal income tax returns for 2019 if:
- Your income is less than $12,200.
- Youre married and filing jointly, and together your income is less than $24,400.
- You have no income.
If you are not required to file a federal income tax return, then you will probably have to wait for the IRS to open up the Non-Filers: Enter Payments Info Here tool to submit the information to get your second stimulus payment.
The information you will need to provide includes:
- Full name, current mailing address, and an email address
- Date of birth and valid Social Security number
- Bank account number, type, and routing number if you have one
- Identity Protection Personal Identification Number you received from the IRS earlier this year if you have one. Taxpayers who previously have been issued an Identity Protection PIN but lost it must use the Get an IP PIN tool to retrieve their numbers
- Drivers license or state-issued ID if you have one
- For each qualifying child during 2019: name, Social Security number or Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number, and their relationship to you or your spouse

Stimulus Checks For Dependents And Children
For every child or dependent under the age of 17 , parents who meet the above eligibility requirements will receive an additional $500 economic impact payment.
However, if the child was born or adopted in 2020, parents will not be supplemented because the payments are based on 2019 tax returns. That said, the IRS is allowing new and payment-eligible parents to claim their child on next year’s returns for retroactive compensation.
Note that the second round of stimulus checks, which may come from the Heroes act to be voted on soon, removes the age limitations on who qualifies for the $1,200-per-dependent kicker. It does cap the number of dependents at three.
What If My Bank Account Information Changed How Will I Get My Second Stimulus Check
Unfortunately, if your second stimulus check is sent to an account that is closed or no longer active, the IRS will not reissue the payment to you by mail. Instead, if you are eligible to get a payment, you can claim the stimulus check on your 2020 tax return as the Recovery Rebate Credit or use GetCTC.org if you dont have a filing requirement.

IRS had until Jan. 15 to send out all second stimulus payments.
For those who have yet to get the payment authorized by the newly enacted COVID-relief legislation, the IRS opened up Free File, free online tax preparation products, on Friday. Now, taxpayers can claim a credit that will help them get their payment.
IRS Free File providers will accept completed tax returns and hold them until they can be filed electronically once the IRS begins processing returns, the IRS said. The Free File Fillable Forms, the electronic version of IRS paper forms, also will be available later when the filing season begins. This product is best for people comfortable preparing their own taxes and is safe and secure.
IRS Free File provider sets eligibility rules for products based on age, income and state residency. Americans who earn less than $72,000 a year will find at least one product for which they qualify, according to the IRS.
While many Americans already received an initial direct deposit payment, paper checks began to be mailed on Dec. 30.

How Can I Get My Stimulus Check
The IRS says people will automatically get their payments in the second round of stimulus checks. One way to track the status of your payment is to visit the “Get My Payment” site.
As with the first round, you will need to enter a few pieces of personally identifiable information, such as your Social Security number, date of birth and address. The site will then provide you with the status of both your first and second stimulus payments.

A second stimulus package was officially presented on the Senate floor in late July as the HEALS Act, but the timing of when it might arrive is still in limbo.
