Second Stimulus Check: How To Set Up Direct Deposit With The Irs
Congress reached agreement on a coronavirus relief package on Sunday that includes a second round of stimulus checks sent to Americans, worth $600. That’s prompted many questions about how to receive the payment via direct deposit.
If the $908 billion package is passed by Congress and signed by President Donald Trump, as expected, eligible Americans will soon receive the $600 checks, half the amount that was given in the first stimulus earlier this year.
The Internal Revenue Service website states: “Direct Deposit is the safest and fastest way to receive a payment including a tax refund. Visit the FDIC website for information on where to find a bank that can open an account online and how to choose the right account for you.”
According to the IRS website, “If you received direct deposit of your refund based on your 2019 tax return , the IRS has sent your Payment to the bank account provided on the most recent tax return.”
“If you filed your 2019 or 2018 tax return but did not receive your refund by direct deposit, your Payment will be mailed to the address we have on file even if you also receive Social Security, Railroad Retirement or Veterans Affairs benefits by direct deposit,” the website states.
To check if you will receive the stimulus payment via direct deposit, Americans can use the “Get My Payment” link, which can be found here.
Check The Get My Payment Tool
The IRS website has been uploading data for your third stimulus payment into a tool on its website called Get My Payment. If your information has been updated, you’ll be able to see the date you can expect to receive your stimulus payment, or the date it was deposited or mailed. You should also be able to see whether your money was direct deposited or whether you’ll be receiving the payment by mail.
Many people are seeing a message that says either the IRS doesn’t have enough information yet or you aren’t eligible for the payment. This message doesn’t necessarily mean you aren’t eligible for the payment. This information may be updated this coming weekend.
Here are some of the issues people are seeing, either with their actual deposit or with the Get My Payment tool.
When Does Eip2 From The Consolidated Appropriations Act Arrive
The Consolidated Appropriations Act EIPs were sent in January, 2021. Direct deposits generally occurred within the first two weeks of January. Mailed payments should arrive before February 24, 2021, and if you have a forwarding address, your payment should arrive before March 10, 2021.
Get My Payment no longer has information for EIP1, but you can access your EIP1 info via an Online Account at IRS.gov.

I Already Filed My Tax Return And Still Havent Gotten My Payment What Can I Do
If you filed a 2019 tax return and it wasnt processed in time to issue your first stimulus check by December 31, 2020, you can claim your first stimulus check as the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit on your 2020 tax return or use GetCTC.org if you dont have a filing requirement.
If you filed your 2020 tax return, the IRS may still be processing your return. The fastest way to receive the payment is through direct deposit. Your first stimulus check, which you claim as the Recovery Rebate Credit, will be sent as part of your tax refund. You can check the status of your tax refund using the IRS tool Wheres My Refund.
Because of COVID-19, it is taking more than 21 days for the IRS to issue refunds for certain mailed and e-filed 2020 tax returns that require review.
Here Are Some Questions And Answers Around This New Stimulus Payment:
If I didnt file taxes in 2019/2020 will I receive the stimulus ? Unlike the first stimulus payment where those who didnt need to file a tax return could update the IRS non-filer tool, this time around due to the speed of roll-out of the second stimulus check and with tax season around the corner the IRS has said the non-filer tool is closed for updates. The IRS will be using information they have as of Nov 21, 2020 or from your first stimulus check payment . Otherwise they are encouraging you to the stimulus by filing a 2020 1040 or 1040-SR tax return. Free tax software programs can be used by people who are not normally required to file tax returns but are eligible to claim the credit.
How will I get paid? Like the first stimulus payment in 2020, the IRS will facilitate payment of these checks based on your 2019 tax information. You will also get the dependent stimulus payment for eligible dependents claimed on your tax return. For other groups who dont file taxes the IRS will work with other government departments or the Get My Payment tool. Direct deposit will still be the fastest way to get your payment.
Dependents in 2020? Households who added dependents in 2020 might not qualify for full payments immediately, since based on 2019 tax return information. But they can request additional money as part of the 2020 tax returns they will file in early 2021. See more in this articles for dependent qualification income thresholds.

If you got the first stimulus payment via check, then you would have likely gotten the payment later than others. This time, however, if you want the next coronavirus stimulus check to reach you quickly, you will have to provide the IRS with your bank account information to get a direct deposit.
Providing your bank account information will ensure that the IRS puts the money directly into your bank account as soon as Congress approves the next stimulus checks.
However, if you have changed bank accounts since the first stimulus payment, then you would not be able to set up direct deposit. In this case, the IRS would first send the payment to your old bank account. After the bank rejects the payment, the agency would send you a check.

For The First And Second Payment Make Sure You’re Actually Qualified To Receive The Money
This applies to the second stimulus check at the moment. Not everyone qualified for a second stimulus check, as some of the eligibility rules changed after the first round. It’s likely the rules will change again if a third check is approved.
Here’s who qualified for the second round, based on your total income on your 2018 or 2019 taxes:
- If you’re a single filer and earn less than $87,000
- If you file as the head of a household and earn under $124,500
- If you file jointly with your spouse and earn less than $174,000
However, there were a lot of exceptions and rules depending on your situation, and the same is true for a future third check .
Your second check could not be garnished to pay overdue child support.

If You’ve Moved Change Your Home Address With The Irs
If you have moved to a new address after filing your 2019 tax return or any time during the coronavirus pandemic, you need to do two things to make sure your stimulus check can reach you.
The first is update your new home address with USPS and inform the IRS of your new location also.
To change your address with USPS, visit usps.com/move.
To update your address with the IRS, you have three options: fill out Form 8822, change your address by phone, or notify the IRS in writing at the address where you filed your last return.
To do this you need to provide the following information, your full name, you old and new address, your social security number, individual taxpayer identification number or employer identification number and your signature.

What If Ive Had Changes Since Filing My 2019 Tax Return
The IRS used information on your 2019 tax return to determine your payment amount if you didnt file a 2020 tax return or if it wasnt processed in time.
If you had a child, you will be able to get the additional $500 for them when you file your 2020 tax return or use GetCTC.org if you dont have a filing requirement.
If you moved and the first stimulus check was not delivered to you, you may need to request a payment trace so the IRS can determine if your payment was cashed . If your payment wasnt cashed, you can claim your first stimulus check as the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit on your 2020 tax return or by using GetCTC.org if you dont have a filing requirement.
If you got divorced and no longer live at the address on your tax return or included direct deposit information for a joint account and you are no longer married, this may be a complex matter that should be discussed with a tax professional.
Unfortunately, if the first stimulus check was issued, the IRS treats the payment as being received by both spouses, even if both people didnt get the money. If the payment went only to your ex-spouse, the IRS views this as a personal legal matter that you should discuss with your divorce attorney. You can also contact your local Low Income Taxpayer Clinic or local Taxpayer Advocate Service for help.
How Can You Correct Mistakes
The IRS sends out Notice 1444 by mail within 15 days of making a direct deposit or sending a paper check. That letter will tell you the amount of your stimulus payment and how it was made. The letter also provides instructions on fixing issues with your payment.
Don’t Respond to Telephone Calls or Texts About Your Stimulus Check
The IRS will not call, text, or email you about your stimulus payment. The Federal Trade Commission is warning that thieves are posing as government employees to prey on stimulus payment recipients. These scammers may ask for your personal information or threaten you that if you don’t send the money back in the form of money transfers or gift cards, you’ll lose your drivers’ license. Ignore these communications.
