How to get your stimulus check

Unfortunately, for now at least, the Get My Payment app cannot track payments for people who receive Social Security, Social Security disability benefits, Railroad Retirement benefits, or veterans benefits. In the words of the IRS on the Get My Payments page, “If you are an SSA or RRB Form 1099 recipient or SSI or VA benefit recipient, your information is not yet available in this application.”

When Are Stimulus Checks Being Sent Out

Here’s the rough schedule so far, courtesy of a House Committee on Ways and Means memo:

  • week of April 13: the IRS will send out 60 million payments to taxpayers for whom it has direct deposit information from their 2018 or 2019 tax returns
  • late April: the IRS will do a “second run of payments” to Social Security beneficiaries who didn’t file tax returns in 2018 or 2019 but do have direct deposit on file
  • week of May 4: the IRS will start mailing paper checks at a rate of 5 million per week a process that could last up to 20 weeks

Didnt Get The Full First And Second Payments Claim The 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit

If you didnt get the full amount of the first or second Economic Impact Payments, you may be eligible to claim the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit by filing a 2020 tax return. The third Economic Impact Payment will not be used to calculate the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit.

What About People With Itins

Will You Get $1,400 Stimulus Checks or Less? This ...

You still need a work-authorizing Social Security Number to be eligible for this stimulus. However, there are important changes since the first round of stimulus checks.

  • In the first stimulus rollout, any non-SSN holder on a joint return made everyone on that return ineligible. Big change: The new rounds of stimulus has corrected this problem. If you filed a joint return with a non-SSN holder, you are still eligible for the stimulus. See the below hypotheticals.
  • Situation: A single tax filer has an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number but no Social Security number .
  • This person is ineligible for the stimulus.
  • Situation: A spouse has a Social Security number and files married filing jointly on a tax return with a spouse who has an ITIN.
  • The SSN holder is now eligible to get a payment. If they have children on the tax return that have SSNs, these children will be eligible for the payment for each qualifying child.
  • Situation: Two ITIN holders file a joint return and claim young children who have SSNs.
  • The children who have SSNs are eligible for the payment.

Who Qualifies For A Stimulus Check

Not everyone. Here’s the income criteria:

    • Single filers whose adjusted gross income does not exceed $75,000 are eligible for the full $1,400 stimulus payment. The amount begins to shrink after that and phases out completely at $80,000.

    • Heads of household whose AGI does not exceed $112,500 are eligible for the full $1,400 stimulus payment. The amount begins to shrink after that and phases out completely at $120,000.

No matter your IRS filing status, the stimulus payment should have included up to $1,400 for every qualifying tax dependent you might have.

    Checking Stimulus Status Online

The taxpayers or non-filers that are eligible for the stimulus can also check their stimulus status by using the Get My Payment tool. This works the same way as the Wheres My Refund tool works and you can see the whereabouts of your stimulus check. For example, on Get My Payment, you will see if and when your refund was sent to you. This applies to the $1,400 third stimulus check after Bidens administration. Make sure to check if you got a stimulus check from the IRS and Department of Treasury. The transaction code for the third stimulus check is IRS TREAS 310 TAXEIP3.

If it shows status not available, check it later during the day or the next day. Because the tool is updated once a day usually at midnight, there is no need for checking the status of Economic Impact Payments multiple times throughout the day as it wont display anything updated.

    What Should I Do Now

There are several things you can do now ahead of a third stimulus payment to ensure things go as smoothly as possible.

    • Make sure the IRS has direct deposit information for you so you will be among the first to receive a stimulus payment.
    • If you havent filed your 2020 taxes, consider any difference between 2019 and 2020 income. If the IRS uses your 2019 taxes and you receive more than you would have using 2020 taxes, then you likely wont have to pay that money back.
    • Conversely, if you receive a stimulus based on 2019 and actually qualify for more in 2020, then you can claim the difference as a Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2021 taxes in 2022.
    • If you have a refund coming in 2020 or have makeup prior stimulus credits coming, then you may want to file now to get that money.
    • To avoid not receiving your third stimulus and having to claim it as a credit in 2022, even if you dont normally have to file income taxes, consider doing it this year to make sure you are in the IRS system.

What’s The First Step To Take

First, you need to log into the Internal Revenue Services Get My Payment tool.

Youll be able to find out when the IRS sent out your check, how much it should be, how it’ll be paid if there’s a delay and more.

To use it, youll need your Social Security Number or Individual Tax ID Number .

If you’ve forgotten your SSN or need a new card, see how you can get a replacement on the official SSN website.

Youll also need to enter your date of birth and address.

If The First Two Stimulus Payments Never Showed Up Do This

The IRS is no longer automatically sending out the first and second payments that were approved in 2020. If you believe you’re still owed money from either of those payment rounds, your best chance of claiming those funds is to file for the Recovery Rebate Credit as part of the 2020 tax season.

If you’re eligible, you’ll need to know the amount of money the IRS allotted you, which you can find out online or from the letter the agency mailed. The IRS said the updated Get My Payment tracker won’t give you information on the first and second checks. Instead, you need to set up and check your IRS account for information on those payments.

What The Online Get My Payment Tool Can’t Tell You

How to find out when you get your coronavirus stimulus ...

The IRS tool won’t give you hourly updates — the status information is updated once daily — nor will it tell you how much stimulus money you’re getting or provide details on the first two stimulus checks approved in 2020. You won’t find steps for what to do if you run into payment problems.

The IRS doesn’t want you to call if you have payment trouble. The agency says its representatives don’t have information beyond what’s shown in the tool. Here’s what we recommend doing to address a stimulus issue.

Another way to find out more info on your third payment is to create an IRS account online. If you are sent a plus-up payment after your 2020 tax return is processed, you should see the amount of your plus-up payment with your online account.

Stimulus Check Qualifications: Find Out If You’re Eligible For $1400 Or More

The rules aren’t the same for who qualifies for a third stimulus check this time around. Here’s how to find out if you’re eligible to receive the $1,400 payment.

Stimulus check requirements for the third round are more generous and stringent at the same time. We’ll explain.

The third stimulus checks are hitting the 130 million mark by direct deposit and as paper checks and EIP cards. A third wave of checks is ramping up for this weekend and next week. If your check for up to $1,400 per household member hasn’t come yet, it’s a good idea to triple-check your eligibility. If you do, here’s how to track your payment and what to do if there’s a problem with your check.

The requirements for the third payment have changed significantly from the first and second checks. For example, there are new income limits and rules for age, citizenship and tax status that can affect the size of your payment. We’ll walk you through what those qualifications are to help you determine whether you should expect a check — or whether you’ll be completely left out.

Additionally, here’s how to claim any missing stimulus money or file a payment trace if you need to. We’ll also explain some other, less common scenarios, with details for nonfilers, people with babies born in 2020 and families in child support situations. This story was updated recently.

What To Do If One Of The Three Stimulus Checks Hasn’t Arrived

About 15 days after the IRS sends out your check, you should receive a letter from the agency confirming the payment. When the first round of stimulus checks went out last year, that letter included two hotline phone numbers because thousands of agents were available to help. But with the second and third rounds of checks, the IRS changed its tune, and these phone numbers may be disconnected.

Here are common scenarios that might indicate you need to look into your stimulus payment:

    • If you’re one of the millions of people who qualified for the first stimulus check but never got it.
    • If your second stimulus check has still not arrived.
    • If you got a letter from the IRS saying your third check was sent, but never received the payment. Or, if the IRS Get My Payment portal said your payment was sent, but you didn’t get it.
    • If you got some of your stimulus money from any payment, but not all of it.

You should also confirm you’re qualified to get the stimulus payment, since not everyone who received a previous check is qualified this time. If you think it’s time to take action, read for more options.

Third Stimulus Checks: When and How Will You Get $1,400?

The third stimulus checks now going out open up more avenues for people to claim a payment — so long as their yearly earnings in 2019 or 2020 fall within the brackets for receiving the third check. These new payments come with changes to the income limit for individuals and families who’d qualify for a full stimulus payment — it isn’t the same as it was for the first two rounds of checks approved in 2020. Check out the chart below for more and use our stimulus calculator to estimate how much you could get.

Who Is Eligible For The Third Stimulus Check

If youre trying to track your stimulus check, youll first want to know if youre eligible to receive one information that the Get My Payment tool wont explicitly inform you when you go track your check.

One good rule of thumb for determining if you qualify: If you were eligible to receive the full amount before, youll be eligible again. Income requirements for receiving full stimulus checks are the same for both individual and married tax filers, while income information is based on your most recently processed tax return .

If you earned up to $75,000 youre slated to get the full relief check worth $1,400. Married couples will thus receive $2,800 as long as their combined AGI doesnt top $150,000.

But the point at which payments completely phase out for Americans happens sooner on the income scale, a move meant to appease more deficit-minded lawmakers and shrink the size of the overall relief package.

Individuals total payments decrease by $28 per every $100 over the income threshold. Single filers and married couples who make $80,000 and $160,000 or more a year, respectively, wont receive a check at all.

Eligible U.S. adults will see $1,400 per each individual in their household, including adult dependents, such as college students.

If youre ineligible for a stimulus payment but currently out of work, heres how to apply for unemployment benefits.

Amount And Status Of Your Payment

To find the amount of the third payment, create or view your online account or refer to IRS Notice 1444-C, which we mailed after sending the payment.

If you are sent a plus-up Economic Impact Payment after your 2020 tax return is processed:

    • The amount of your initial third payment will no longer show in your online account. You will only see the amount of your plus-up payment.
    • The status of your initial third payment will no longer show in Get My Payment. You will only see the status of your plus-up payment.

What If I Never Got Letter 6475

If you never got a third stimulus check, you won’t receive Letter 6475. Instead, you’ll need to create an IRS online account to view the amount of your Economic Impact Payments. If you were eligible for payments and didn’t get them, you can get those funds by claiming the recovery rebate tax credit on your 2021 tax return.

What Does Need More Information Mean

How to Find Out When Youâre Getting Your Stimulus Check

Others may see a “need more information” message, which the tax agency said means the payment was returned to the IRS because the U.S. Postal Service wasn’t able to deliver the check. In that case, people can use the “Get My Payment” site to provide the IRS with bank information but the tax agency said that only people who get the “need more information” message will be able to add their bank information to the portal.

Can You Use The Portal If You Didn’t File A Tax Return

You couldn’t use the “Get My Payment” tool to track the status of your first stimulus check if you didn’t file a 2018 or 2019 federal income tax return. However, there was another online tool that non-filers could use to give the IRS with the information it needed to process a payment.

The non-filers tool wasn’t used for second stimulus checks, though. Instead, if you didn’t file a 2019 tax return, and you didn’t use the non-filers tool to get your first-round payment, then you have to wait to claim your second stimulus check money as a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2020 return.

The IRS is not using the non-filers tool for third-round stimulus checks, either. As a result, if you don’t file a 2019 or 2020 tax return, you’ll have to claim any money you’re owed as a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2021 return, which you won’t file until next year. However, you can avoid having to wait until next year by filing a 2020 return before the May 17, 2021, deadline.
