More Stimulus On The Way How To Make Sure You Get Your Check
More stimulus on the way, how to make sure you get your check
BOSTON Wednesday marks one week since stimulus payments were direct deposited into millions of bank accounts, but not everyone who was supposed to receive money has.
I got two kids, six and a 13-year-old, half of that went to food and car payments, said Stoughton resident Keith Puliti.
While many people like Puliti have already begun spending their $1,400 check, many others are still waiting.
I had one client that had a child in 2019 and then but they filed with the child in 2019, but they didnt file in 2018 because the child was not born yet, said Affordable Multi Services of Norwood owner Rutherford Saint-Cyr. So IRS used 2018 and they did not receive a stimulus for the child.
If youre still waiting, you can go to IRS.gov and click get my payment.
Youll need to enter your full Social Security number or tax ID number, date of birth, street address, and zip code. If it doesnt tell you the exact date of payment, either you are not eligible for a payment or the IRS has not processed your payment. The site is updated daily.
Tax preparers say you can also check with your bank, your software provider, or a tax professional if applicable. They can help you file a tax return and then claim a recovery rebate.
Saint-Cyr says if you only received a partial check or didnt receive any money there may be a good reason.
The unemployment rate is 8.4%, up from 2.8% before the pandemic.
Who Qualifies To Receive Money From The Senate Coronavirus Relief Plan
This step is especially important for low-income Americans who don’t typically file taxes. In that case, they would still need to file a form.
People receiving nontaxable income would still get checks and those receiving Social Security benefits.
It’s not necessary to download special software or use a tax preparer. The IRS has two paths for free filing options, one for those making under $69,000 and another for those making above $69,000. Both can be found on IRS.gov.

Individuals making up to $75,000 a year would receive checks for $1,200, with an additional $500 per child. The payments would progressively decrease for individuals making more than $75,000, with an income cap of $99,000.
Americans should start getting checks within three weeks, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Thursday. By comparison, the IRS took three months to distribute checks in 2009 to battle the Great Recession.

All Third Economic Impact Payments must be issued by Dec. 31, 2021 in accordance with the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, signed into law on March 11, 2021.
The IRS mailed Notice 1444-C to people who received a third Economic Impact Payment. You should keep this letter with your tax year 2021 records.

Who Should Apply For A Recovery Rebate Credit

The IRS has prepared a special worksheet for Americans who think they might be eligible for a Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2020 tax return. Youll have to fill that out when claiming your credit. But there are a few groups of people who might want to pay close attention in particular.
The 2020 tax return is the great corrector for all changes, issues or lost money that you didnt receive with your stimulus check, says Mark Steber, senior vice president and chief tax officer at Jackson Hewitt. You may be due $1,200, $1,800 or $2,400. The skys the limit if youve got three children and are married and havent gotten your payment.

Need Funds To Help Manage During The Covid
To help people cope with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, the federal government is providing stimulus checks. These are worth up to $1,200 for individuals and $2,400 for couples. And if you have eligible dependent children, you’ll get an additional $500 per qualifying child.
The amounts described above are the maximum you’ll receive, and you need to make under $75,000 as a single person or $150,000 as a married joint filer to get that amount. If your income exceeds these limits, the amount of your payment drops by $5 for each $100 in additional earned income.
The IRS needs to know your income information and how many dependents you have in order to get your money to you. Most people don’t have to do anything to provide these details because the IRS can get them from 2018 or 2019 tax returns.
But for some people, more information is needed. If you’re one of them, you can fill out a simple form on the IRS website. You can find out below if you need to complete that form.
How To Get Your Stimulus Check As Quickly As Possible
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has said the stimulus check payments will start being processed in … April.
The stimulus check created by the CARES Act is set to start going out very soon.
If the IRS has your direct deposit information already, they will begin issuing those payments first followed by those who will get them via paper checks.
If you want your stimulus check as fast as possible, the IRS needs your direct deposit information and, right now, the only way to get that information to the IRS is through your tax return.
If you did not file your 2019 tax return, do so quickly.
The IRS states that, under normal circumstances, tax returns are processed and paper check refunds are issued within three weeks. Its possible that if you file right now, your information will be updated in time for the first round of payments.
If you earn less than $69,000, the IRS Free File program has a list of partners that offer free online tax filing that you can complete today. When you file your taxes, make sure you file them electronically. If you mail a paper return, it takes much longer to process your return.
The IRS is set to process a lot of payments for this tax credit and will likely do so over a period of time. On CBS Face The Nation on March 29th, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has said the payments would appear within three weeks. That leaves you little time to file so dont delay.

You Might Not Get Your Payment By Jan 15
Use the IRS Get My Payment tool to track the status of your payment. If you receive a Payment Status #2 Not Available notice, you should prepare for a longer wait: your payment will likely not be processed by Jan. 15.
Instead, youll need to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax returns. If you end up owing money on your 2020 taxes, it will reduce the amount you owe, Cagan says. If you get a refund, youll get a bigger refund. If you have zero income, youll just get the full amount back.
There are several reasons why your payment may not arrive, but here are a few common issues:
What You Need To Do
If you haven’t received either the July or August payment as a direct deposit and want to, or if you need to make changes to your bank-account information, now is the time.
Families receiving the advance child-tax-credit payments have until Aug. 30 to edit their information in the Child Tax Credit Update Portal if they want their Sept.15 payout to be direct-deposited.
Plus, if you didn’t receive a child-tax-credit payment in July but believe you’re eligible, it’s possible that the IRS hadn’t processed your tax return or that there was a mismatch between your Individual Taxpayer Identification Number and your child’s Social Security number.
You’ll still get the full credit amount as the IRS resolves these issues each monthly payment will be slightly larger than the normal amount, as the cash will be distributed over fewer months.
Bottom line: File your 2020 tax return and check to make sure your direct-deposit information is up-to-date with the IRS.

The stimulus checks, which are part of a $2 trillion CARES act relief package, are set to help Americans who are unemployed or losing income due to COVID-19. Americans are receiving a $1,200 direct deposit or check from the IRS, assuming you meet the eligibility criteria.
Even though millions of Americans have received their payment, there are still many who have yet to see their stimulus check. If you find yourself in this category, there could be many reasons why you dont have your check. We wanted to point out some common reasons why your check may not have arrived and what you can do to make sure it gets to you safely!
Recovery Rebate Credits For 2020 And 2021
To provide financial relief during pandemic, many Americans received three Economic Impact Payments in 2020 and 2021. The third payment, which began rolling out in March 2021, served as an advance payment of the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit.
If you didnt receive the latest EIP, you could be eligible to receive the following as part of your tax refund:
- $1,400 for a single individual
- $2,800 for a married couple filing jointly
If you received the EIP in 2021, you should have an IRS letter Notice 1444-C showing the amount you received so you can record it on your tax return.
- If you didnt receive the most recent EIP, you can claim it when you file your 2021 tax return.
If you didnt receive the first or second EIPs, even though youre eligible based on your income, you need to file or amend your Tax Year 2020 returns to receive those payments.

Physical Checks Will Take A While To Process And Ship
Printing and shipping all those checks is no small task. The current estimate is that about 5 million checks will be shipped each week, starting with recipients with the lowest adjusted gross income. All told, it may take up to 20 weeks for everyone to get their checks.
You can reduce that wait substantially by signing up for direct deposit. Thankfully its not a tricky process.
Visit irs.gov/coronavirus/get-my-payment to check the status of your stimulus payment and enter the account information for your preferred checking or savings account. Youll need to provide some information from your 2019 tax return, so youll want to have that on hand.
As you might expect, the sites been getting a lot of traffic and so the process may take some time. Just be patient itll be worth it if youre able to successfully switch from paper check to direct deposit.
Will I Get An Economic Impact Payment

If you meet the following four requirements, you likely qualify for the stimulus.
1. Income Limits: If you are filing as single with an adjusted gross income up to $75,000, married filing jointly with an AGI up to $150,000, or head of household with an AGI up to $112,500, you will receive the full payment. Above these income limits, the payment amount decreases 5 percent for every additional $100 of income up to $99,000 for a single adult, $136,500 for head of household, and $198,000 for a married couple.
If you have zero income you can still get the payment.
2. Age requirements: There is no age requirement for the stimulus check, however you cannot be someone elses dependent. Children must be under 17 to get the additional payment for them.
3. Taxpayer Identification Number :At least one tax filer must have a valid Social Security number . If you are married filing jointly, and one spouse has an SSN and one has an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number , the spouse with an SSN and any children with SSNs or an Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number can get the payment. If one spouse is an active member of the military, then both spouses are eligible for a stimulus check even if only one spouse has an SSN and the other spouse has an ITIN.
4. Citizenship or Residency: You must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or qualifying resident alien.

What The Irs Will Do
You’ll generally receive a response about six weeks after the IRS receives your request for a payment trace . They will process your claim for a missing payment in one of two ways. If the check was not cashed, the IRS will issue you a new one. If you find the original check after receiving a new payment, you must return the original as soon as possible.
If the check was cashed, the U.S. Bureau of the Fiscal Service will send you a claim package that includes a copy of the cashed check. Follow the instructions in the packet. The bureau will review your claim and the signature on the canceled check before determining whether the payment can be reversed and a new payment issued.
Protect Yourself From Tax
Tax ID theft occurs when someone steals your personal information to file a tax return using your personal data. Usually, the fraudulent tax filer will use your Social Security number to file your return in order to collect a refund. To protect yourself from tax ID theft, you can obtain a six-digit Identity Protection PIN from the IRS. IP PINs are known only to you and the IRS so the IRS is able to confirm your identity when you file your return. Learn more about how the IP PIN works and how to apply.

Stimulus Checks Could Be Seized To Cover Past Due Debt
If you owe child support or other debts, your first check was seized to cover those debts. The third check is subject to being taken by private debt collectors, but not the state or federal government. The same goes for the second payment, too, if you’re claiming missing money in a recovery rebate credit. You may receive a notice from the Bureau of the Fiscal Service or your bank if either of these scenarios happens.
In the case of the third check, we recommend calling your bank to confirm the garnishment request from creditors and ask for details about how long you have to file a request with a local court to stop the garnishment. If you think money has already been mistakenly seized from the first two checks, you can file a recovery rebate credit as part of your 2020 tax return — but only if you filed a tax extension.
You can track down your stimulus payment without picking up the phone.
