The Internal Revenue Service has announced that the Get My Payment tool is now open. Folks looking for information about their stimulus checks can now check the status of both their first and second payments by using the Get My Payment tool, available in English and Spanish only on IRS.gov.

The Get My Payment tool will allow you to confirm that:

  • Whether the IRS has sent your second stimulus payment.
  • Whether the IRS sent your first stimulus payment. Not that some people received their first stimulus in partial payments if you received partial payments, the tool will show only the most recent.
  • Whether to expect your stimulus payment by direct deposit or mail.

According to the IRS, data is updated once per day overnight, so there’s no need to check more than once per day.

The IRS advises folks to use the tool to check on the status of their stimulus payment, but not to call. The IRS phone assistors do not have additional information beyond whats available on IRS.gov and in the Get My Payment tool.

This second round of checks is part of the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021, passed by Congress last week and signed into law by President Trump on Sunday night.

Important: Third Stimulus Check Qualification Details

The third stimulus checks now going out open up more avenues for people to claim a payment — so long as their yearly earnings in 2019 or 2020 fall within the brackets for receiving the third check. These new payments come with changes to the income limit for individuals and families who’d qualify for a full stimulus payment — it isn’t the same as it was for the first two rounds of checks approved in 2020. How To Get Your Stimulus Check

How to track the status of your stimulus check

Finding The Amounts Of Your First Second And Third Stimulus Checks

To find the amount of stimulus payment youve received, you can:

  • Refer to the IRS notices that were mailed to you. IRS Notice 1444shows how much you received from the first stimulus check. IRS Notice 1444-B shows how much you received from the second stimulus check. IRS Notice 1444-C shows how much you received from the third stimulus check.
  • Check your bank statements. If you had your payments direct deposited, you can find the amount of your first, second, and third stimulus check using your bank statements. They should be labeled as IRS TREAS 310 and have a code of either TAXEIP1 , TAXEIP2 , or TAXEIP3 .
  • Request an account transcript. You can request an account transcript sent electronically or by mail using Get Transcript. You can also call the IRS automated phone transcript service at 800-908-9946 or mail in Form 4506-T to have your transcript be sent by mail.
  • Create an account on IRS.gov/account. You can view your stimulus check amounts under the Tax Records tab. If you filed jointly with your spouse, you will only see your half of the stimulus check amounts. Your spouse will need to sign into their own account to see the other half of the stimulus check amounts.

To create an account, you will need:

  • Basic information: full name, email, birthday, Social Security Number or Individual Tax Identification Number , tax filing status, and current address.
  • What If You Have Trouble With The Tool

To use the Get My Payment tool, you must first verify your identity by answering security questions. If the information you enter does not match IRS records, you will receive an error message. To avoid this:

    • Double-check the information requested
    • Make sure what you enter is accurate
    • Try entering your street address in a different way and
    • Use the US Postal Services ZIP Lookup tool to look up the standard version of your address, and enter it into exactly as it appears on file with the Postal Service.

If your answers do not match the IRS records three times, youll be locked out of Get My Payment for security reasons. If that happens, you must wait 24 hours and try again. If you cant verify your identity, you wont be able to use Get My Payment. Unfortunately, theres no fix for that: the IRS says not to not contact them.

However, if you verified your identity and received Payment Status Not Available, this means that the IRS cannot determine your eligibility for a payment right now. There are several reasons this could happen, including:

    • You didnt file either a 2018 or 2019 tax return or
    • Your recently filed return has not been fully processed.

Again, the IRS says theres no fix for that and you should not contact them.

Once youve entered your information, youll get one of two messages:

    • If you receive the message Payment Status,” this means your check has been processed and will include information such as the payment date and how your check was issued.
    • If you receive the message Payment Status Not Available, this means you were either not eligible for a payment, or the IRS wasnt able to issue a payment.

If youve been told your payment status isnt available, heres what to do next.

What To Do If There’s A Direct Deposit Issue

Find Your Stimulus Check (and get it faster!)

The IRS tracking tool for the third stimulus check doesn’t allow you to add direct deposit information this time unless the IRS can’t deliver your payment. So if you have a problem, what do you do? Your check may have bounced back to the IRS if the agency tried to send your payment to a now-closed bank account or to a temporary prepaid debit card a tax preparer set up for you. If your payment was returned to the IRS, the agency will mail your check to the current address it has on file for you. If that check is returned, then the IRS will let you enter your banking information in the Get My Payment tool, the IRS said.

First, we suggest you call your bank or tax preparer — it never hurts to cover all your bases to confirm that an attempt was made to deposit money into a closed account or debit card.

Unfortunately, you’ll need to wait and monitor the Get My Payment tracker to keep tabs on your check delivery. We also recommend signing up for a free service to track your check to your mailbox.

Didn’t Get The First And Second Payments Claim The 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit

If you didn’t get the full amount of the first or second payment you were eligible for, you may be eligible to claim the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit and must file a 2020 tax return even if you aren’t required to file. The third payment will not be used to calculate the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit.

How To Check If You’re Owed More Child Tax Credit Money

The third stimulus check may not be the only stimulus money you can claim when you file your taxes. There are millions of parents who are eligible to claim the second half of the Child Tax Credit — and as with the stimulus money, there’s an easy way to check to see what you’re owed.

If you want to find out what you can claim for the Child Tax Credit, you’ll want to refer to Letter 6419, which is also originating from the IRS. This letter outlines pertinent information about the tax credit payments you received during the second half of 2021 — if any. This includes the total payment amount you have received thus far and the number of dependents the IRS included in your payments.

This information will help you to determine what you can claim for the Child Tax Credit as part of your tax return. It will also come in handy when filing your taxes, as you will need the information included in that letter to reduce the chance of errors on your return. Any incorrect information included in your tax paperwork will likely result in delays or other issues during processing, so be sure to compare the information in Letter 6419 to the information you include in your tax filings.

While additional assistance from the federal government looks less and less likely by the day, making sure you claim any remaining owed funds on your 2021 tax return could still provide a welcome boost for your family this spring.

    What Information Will You Need

To access the tool, you’ll be asked to provide a:

    • Social Security Number or Individual Tax ID Number
    • Date of birth
    • Street address and
    • Five-digit ZIP or postal code.

If you file a joint tax return, either spouse can typically access the portal by providing their own information for the security questions used to verify a taxpayer’s identity. Once verified, the same payment status is shown for both spouses. In some cases, however, married couples who file a joint tax return may get their third stimulus payment as two separate payments half may come as a direct deposit and the other half will be mailed to the address the IRS has on file. If that case, each spouse should check the “Get My Payment” tool separately using their own Social Security number to see the status of their payments.

If you submit information that doesn’t match the IRS’s records three times within a 24-hour period, you’ll be locked out of the portal for 24 hours . You’ll also be locked out if you’ve already accessed the system five times within a 24-hour period. Don’t contact the IRS if you’re shut out. Instead, just wait 24 hours and try again.

What If Dont Normally File A Tax Return

How can I check on the status of my stimulus check?

The IRS said this third round of stimulus will be based on tax year 2019 or 2020 information, or information obtained by the Social Security Administration and Veterans Affairs Administration. If you are a non-filer who also does not receive a SSA or VA benefit, then use the Non-filer Sign-up tool, described below.

The IRS recently launched a new Non-filer Sign-up tool on its website. Although this non-filer portal is labeled as for non-filers claiming advance payments of the child tax credit, it is also available for others, including single individuals and people experiencing homelessness. It will allow individuals to provide their information to the IRS so that they can receive any of the three Economic Impact Payments , also known as stimulus payments, that they may be missing. If an individual did not get the full amounts of the EIPs, they may use this tool if they:

    • Are not required to file a 2020 tax return, didnt file a 2020 tax return, and dont plan to, and
    • Want to claim the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit and get their third EIP.

The new Non-filer Sign-up tool is for people who did not file a tax return for 2019 or 2020, and who did not use the IRS Non-filers tool last year to register for Economic Impact Payments.
