Do I Really Need To Hold On To The Letter
You should always save tax return-related documents, says , chief tax information officer at Jackson Hewitt: W2s, interest statements and IRS letters are a good record of your account in case anything comes along in the next two or three years, he says.
Its always important, but especially important if youre due more money particularly if you had a new baby, adopted a child, fostered a child, its your year for split shared custody or any number of additional life changes, Steber told CNET. All of these situations would lend themselves to an additional payment.

Stimulus Check Status: How To Track Down Your Payment Now
ByKate Kozuchpublished 9 April 21
Tracking your third stimulus check status online can help you locate your $1,400 payment. As with the first and second stimulus checks, the IRS offers an online tool that can tell you when to expect your share of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.
Americans who meet the $1,400 third stimulus check eligibility requirements can see the status of their payment right now with the IRS’s Get My Payment portal. Even if you’re not eligible for the full stimulus-check amount, you can get a look at your payment’s standing.
To help people keep tabs through upcoming payment cycles, the IRS has updated the Get My Payment app with information for the latest stimulus check. After you fill out a short form, you should be able to view the status of your stimulus check if you’re due to get one.
Whether you’re getting your check in the mail or direct deposit into your bank account, the Get My Payment app should be able to answer some of your questions. You can also use the IRS stimulus check phone number for more help.
Reminder: Unless you’re exempt, you’ll need to have filed your taxes for 2019 or 2020 before the IRS can send you a relief payment.

What Do These Irs Tax Return Statuses Mean
Both IRS tools will show you one of three messages to explain your tax return status.
- Received: The IRS now has your tax return and is working to process it.
- Approved: The IRS has processed your return and confirmed the amount of your refund, if you’re owed one.
- Sent: Your refund is now on its way to your bank via direct deposit or as a paper check sent to your mailbox.
Why Did The Irs Send My Tax Refund In The Mail Instead Of Depositing It In My Bank Account

There are a couple of reasons that your refund would be mailed to you. Your money can only be electronically deposited into a bank account with your name, your spouse’s name or a joint account. If that’s not the reason, you may be getting multiple refund checks, and the IRS can only direct deposit up to three refunds to one account. Additional refunds must be mailed. Also, your bank may reject the deposit and this would be the IRS’ next best way to refund your money quickly.
It’s also important to note that for refunds, direct deposit isn’t always automatic. Just in case, sign in to your IRS account to check that the agency has your correct banking information. If you are receiving a refund check in the mail, learn how to track it from the IRS to your mailbox.

Stimulus Check Eligibility: Do You Get One
Stimulus check eligibility depends on how much you earn on the books each year. If you are a U.S. taxpayer that earned less than $75,000 a year according to your most recent tax return, you qualify for the full $1,200 payment.
Note that people on Social Security support dont need to apply for the payment. Unfortunately, in the rush to get out stimulus checks as quickly as possible, some have been sent to people who have died, according to CNN. And the IRS says those payments need to be returned.
Keep in mind that you must file your taxes to quality for the stimulus check. The IRS has extended the usual April 15 deadline to July 15, but the sooner the government has your 2018-2019 tax information the sooner you can get your payment.

Stimulus Checks For Dependents And Children
For every child or dependent under the age of 17 , parents who meet the above eligibility requirements will receive an additional $500 economic impact payment.
However, if the child was born or adopted in 2020, parents will not be supplemented because the payments are based on 2019 tax returns. That said, the IRS is allowing new and payment-eligible parents to claim their child on next year’s returns for retroactive compensation.
Note that the second round of stimulus checks, which may come from the Heroes act to be voted on soon, removes the age limitations on who qualifies for the $1,200-per-dependent kicker. It does cap the number of dependents at three.
Where’s My Third Stimulus Check Irs Updates ‘get My Payment’ Tool For Covid Payments
You can now find out when your next stimulus payment is expected to hit your bank account or get mailed.
The IRS has updated the Get My Payment tool on its website with information on the third round of stimulus checks, agency spokesperson Karen Connelly confirmed to USA TODAY. Check for your status at www.irs.gov/coronavirus/get-my-payment.
The third round of Economic Impact Payments will be based on a taxpayers latest processed tax return from either 2020 or 2019. That includes anyone who used the IRS non-filers tool last year, or submitted a special simplified tax return.
Those who received the first two stimulus checks but didnt receive a payment via direct deposit will receive a check or a prepaid debit card.
Social Security and other federal beneficiaries will generally receive this third payment the same way as their regular benefits, the IRS said. A payment date for this group is expected to be announced soon.
The payments would amount to $1,400 for a single person or $2,800 for a married couple filing jointly, plus an additional $1,400 for each dependent child. Individuals earning up to $75,000 would get the full payments, as would married couples with incomes up to $150,000. Payments would decline for incomes above those thresholds, phasing out above $80,000 for individuals and $160,000 for married couples.

How To Use Irs ‘get My Payment’
The IRS also updated frequently asked questions Saturday on how to use the “Get My Payment” tool, which requires users to enter their full Social Security number or tax ID number, date of birth, street address and ZIP code.
But before you start entering your information hourly, the IRS says the tool updates once per day, usually overnight and that people should not call the IRS. Our phone assistors don’t have information beyond what’s available on IRS.gov.
The tool will show the status of when a payment has been issued and the payment date for direct deposit or mail, according to the frequently asked questions. Some will get a message that says “Payment Status Not Available.”
“If you get this message, either we have not yet processed your payment, or you are not eligible for a payment,” the IRS said. “We will continue to send the 2021 Economic Impact Payment to eligible individuals throughout 2021.”
And others will get a “Need More Information” message when using the tool if the payment was returned to the IRS because the post office was unable to deliver it for another reason.
If your address has changed the IRS says the easiest way to update is to “file your 2020 tax return with your current address, if you havent already done so. Once we receive your current address, we will reissue your payment.”

- You are a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident, or a U.S. resident alien with a social security number.
- You have a Social Security number.
- You are a non-filer, meaning you havent filed a tax return in the last two years because you did not earn enough income.
- Your annual income is under $75,000. If you are married and filing jointly, the threshold is $150,000.

The IRS has closed the form that non-filers used to access their stimulus money in 2020. Instead of using that form, they are now asking all non-filers to fill out a simplified tax return to receive stimulus money. This simplified tax return is due on April 15th. Scroll to the bottom of this article for a list or organizations that can help you file a simplified tax return.
Once you have collected all the information below, you will be ready to fill out the simplified tax return, which will help ensure that you receive your $1,400 check. That form can be found here.
Heres what youll need.
First, you will need your Social Security number. If you do not have your Social Security number, you will need a government issued ID and a mailing address to request a new card from the Social Security Administration. This task can be accomplished online.

What If You Have Changed Your Address Or Bank Account
The IRS will use the data already in its systems to send the new payments:
- If your direct deposit information is on file, you will receive the payment that way.
- If your direct deposit information is not on file, you will receive the payment as a check or debit card in the mail.
Some payments may have been sent to an account that may be closed or no longer active. By law, the financial institution must return the payment to the IRS, they cannot hold and issue the payment to an individual when the account is no longer active.
The IRS cannot change payment information, including bank account or mailing information. If an eligible taxpayer does not get a payment or it is less than expected, it may be claimed on the 2020 tax return as the Recovery Rebate Credit. Remember, Economic Impact Payments are an advance payment of what will be called the Recovery Rebate Credit on the 2020 Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR.
