What To Do About Payment Scams
Though it’s uncommon, you may believe you’ve been scammed out of your payment or had it stolen. The Federal Trade Commission has a website where you can report a stolen stimulus check. If you’re worried about theft, you can sign up for a free USPS service that will send you a picture of every piece of mail coming your way — including your stimulus payment.
How To Check The Status Of Your Coronavirus Stimulus Check
If you’re trying to find out the status of your coronavirus stimulus payment, go to the IRS’s Get My Payment page. You can learn whether your payment has been issued, and if it’s coming by direct deposit or mailed check.
Learn more about the stimulus payments, including whether you qualify for one and what, if anything, you may have to do to get yours.
What Does Need More Information Mean
Others may see a “need more information” message, which the tax agency said means the payment was returned to the IRS because the U.S. Postal Service wasn’t able to deliver the check. In that case, people can use the “Get My Payment” site to provide the IRS with bank information but the tax agency said that only people who get the “need more information” message will be able to add their bank information to the portal.

How Should You Save Your Stimulus Check
An excellent way to save your stimulus check is to create an emergency fund. An emergency fund is a savings account that contains enough money to cover three to six months worth of expenses in case you lose your job or experience another unexpected financial emergency. This will help you avoid going into debt if something unexpected happens. You can deposit the full amount of the stimulus check into the emergency fund or just part of it, depending on your needs. When you set this money aside, you can be sure you dont spend the money unnecessarily and that it will be available when you need it.
Another way to save your stimulus check is to put it into a solid savings account or certificate of deposit . This will ensure that you have the money available when you need it while also earning interest on your investment. Many banks offer competitive interest rates on savings accounts and CDs, so be sure to shop around to find the best deal.
You may also want to use your check to save for retirement or to increase your current retirement savings. If you do not have a retirement savings account, now is a good time to start one. Contributions to a retirement savings account may be eligible for a tax deduction.
Overall, it is important to save your stimulus check. The money can help you in the short and long term, so it is definitely worth considering.
What To Do If One Of The Three Stimulus Checks Hasn’t Arrived
About 15 days after the IRS sends out your check, you should receive a letter from the agency confirming the payment. When the first round of stimulus checks went out last year, that letter included two hotline phone numbers because thousands of agents were available to help. But with the second and third rounds of checks, the IRS changed its tune, and these phone numbers may be disconnected.
Here are common scenarios that might indicate you need to look into your stimulus payment:
- If you’re one of the millions of people who qualified for the first stimulus check but never got it.
- If your second stimulus check has still not arrived.
- If you got a letter from the IRS saying your third check was sent, but never received the payment. Or, if the IRS Get My Payment portal said your payment was sent, but you didn’t get it.
- If you got some of your stimulus money from any payment, but not all of it.
You should also confirm you’re qualified to get the stimulus payment, since not everyone who received a previous check is qualified this time. If you think it’s time to take action, read for more options.

I Received A Second Payment But My Spouse Didn’t
There have been cases where a couple submit their tax returns as “married filing jointly,” and both spouses are eligible for a $1,400 stimulus check, but one spouse received a payment and the other did not . This is an error on the IRS’s part. Unfortunately, the spouse who didn’t receive a check will have to claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on his or her 2020 tax return. See below for instructions on claiming the rebate on your tax return.
Advance Child Tax Credit

Even if you dont pay any taxes, you may qualify for a refund of the CTC.
The CTC was expanded under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 for tax year 2021 only. If you are eligible, you should have begun receiving advance Child Tax Credit payments on July 15. The payments will continue monthly through December 2021. Under ARPA, families are eligible to receive:
- Up to $3,000 per qualifying child between ages 6 and 17
- Up to $3,600 per qualifying child under age 6
The Internal Revenue Service began sending out letters in early June to more than 36 million families who may be eligible for the monthly payments. Most families do not need to do anything to get their payments, as long as theyve filed their 2020 or 2019 tax return. Learn more about the letter and how it can help you determine your eligibility.

Will I Get A Third Stimulus Check
If you are an eligible U.S. citizen or resident alien , you will likely receive a stimulus payment. In addition, each of your qualified dependents, regardless of age, would be eligible as well.
The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 defines dependent as any dependent for income tax purposes. This is a change from previous stimulus payments that stipulated child dependents under age 17. The proposed legislation also includes mixed-status families in which at least one family member has a Social Security number, similar to the way such families were included with the second stimulus payment.
Is Additional Help Coming For Maine Residents
After last years $285 payments from the states Disaster Relief Program, Maine residents might be wondering if state-sponsored payments will become a recurring benefit.
According to Austin, Mainers have no reason to expect another payout like this. While the stimulus check is a response to economic conditions, it was created for another practical purpose. Maine has budget rules like nearly every other state that require our budgets be balanced, she says.
More than half of the states budget surplus is going toward the new stimulus plan.
The new supplemental budget also includes other significant one-time initiatives. Budget highlights include:
- A tax break for those who collect a Maine retirement pension, including a gradual increase in their annual deduction, from the current limit of $10,000 up to $35,000 in 2024.
- An increase in Maines Property Tax Fairness Credit, which will give an estimated $1,000 per year in refundable tax credit to homeowners, and up to $1,500 a year to senior homeowners.
- Two years of free community college for pandemic-impacted students
- Up to $2,500 per year, or $25,000 per lifetime, in refundable tax credit benefits for student loan debt relief
Austin says that Maine has also permanently doubled its earned income tax credit .

Unclaimed Federal Tax Refunds
If you are eligible for a federal tax refund and dont file a return, then your refund will go unclaimed. Even if you aren’t required to file a return, it might benefit you to file if:
-
Federal taxes were withheld from your pay
and/or
-
You qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit
You may not have filed a tax return because your wages were below the filing requirement. But you can still file a return within three years of the filing deadline to get your refund.
Will The Irs Reload A Prior Pre
Some people who received one or both of their first two stimulus payments on a pre-paid debit card may wonder if the IRS will reload that card with the $1,400 for the latest round of payments. The answer is no, the IRS says.
If the IRS now has bank account information for you, it will send the money via direct deposit. If not, it will either issue a check or a pre-paid debit card, but the latter will come in the form of a new card, the tax agency said.
People should look for a white envelope with the return address “Economic Impact Payment Card” accompanied by a U.S. Treasury Department seal. The card says “Visa” on the front, and the issuing bank, MetaBank, on the back.

Who Is Eligible For The Third Stimulus Check
If youre trying to track your stimulus check, youll first want to know if youre eligible to receive one information that the Get My Payment tool wont explicitly inform you when you go track your check.
One good rule of thumb for determining if you qualify: If you were eligible to receive the full amount before, youll be eligible again. Income requirements for receiving full stimulus checks are the same for both individual and married tax filers, while income information is based on your most recently processed tax return .
If you earned up to $75,000 youre slated to get the full relief check worth $1,400. Married couples will thus receive $2,800 as long as their combined AGI doesnt top $150,000.
But the point at which payments completely phase out for Americans happens sooner on the income scale, a move meant to appease more deficit-minded lawmakers and shrink the size of the overall relief package.
Individuals total payments decrease by $28 per every $100 over the income threshold. Single filers and married couples who make $80,000 and $160,000 or more a year, respectively, wont receive a check at all.
Eligible U.S. adults will see $1,400 per each individual in their household, including adult dependents, such as college students.
If youre ineligible for a stimulus payment but currently out of work, heres how to apply for unemployment benefits.
Still Don’t Have A Stimulus Check Here’s How To Track Yours
May 12, 2021 / 3:35 PM / MoneyWatch
While major banks in the U.S. started delivering $1,400 stimulus checks in March, the federal relief payments continue to arrive at millions of households struggling to make ends meet amid the coronavirus-hobbled economy.
The Internal Revenue Service has delivered more than 165 million payments, with a total value of approximately $388 billion, the agency said Wednesday. The latest round includes 1 million payments, with the IRS noting they have an official payment date of May 12. That means the most recent recipients will receive a direct deposit on Wednesday, or soon get a paper check or pre-paid debit card in the mail.
The timing and delivery of checks has been a cause of anxiety for some people, especially for those who receive government benefits such as Social Security and don’t typically file taxes. The IRS prioritized sending checks to people who have already filed their 2019 or 2020 tax returns, since the agency was able to quickly verify eligibility based on income and also determine where to mail or direct deposit the checks.
The agency said it’s sending another 500,000 payments to eligible people who recently filed a tax return but for whom it didn’t previously have information to issue a stimulus check.
