Who’s Eligible For The Payment

Those eligible for the money could include people whose tax situation changed in 2021, but the change was not reflected in their latest tax return.

For example, parents who welcomed a child in 2021 may be eligible for the $1,400 payments as long as they meet income requirements.

Eligibility for the third round of stimulus checks, issued earlier this year as part of President Joe Biden‘s American Rescue Plan, was based on a family’s last tax return filed.

Since babies born in 2021 were not factored in, the $1,400 checks will be applied to their parent or guardian’s 2021 tax return.

Others may be eligible for more money as well due to a change in income or the addition of a dependent.

Payments begin to phase out for people who make more than those income limits.

They completely phase out for individuals who make more than $80,000 and couples who make more than $160,000.

The number of families still owed a $1,400 stimulus check is not yet known but it is estimated to be in the millions.

The figure wont be known until the total number of births for 2021 is revealed.

Where Is My Stimulus Check How To Monitor Your Payment Status With The Irs

The Internal Revenue Service has activated its online Get My Payment tool, allowing Americans to check exactly when their $600 stimulus check will arrive.

The payments are part of the $900 billion stimulus package that was passed last month as part of the second round of relief under the coronavirus aid for Americans.

When Will My Stimulus Check Arrive?

The new stimulus payments began rolling out last week, but the IRS said direct deposit payments may take several days to post to individual accounts. The IRS has urged Americans to be patient as mailed payments will require more processing and mail time.

Direct deposits will be made to those that have provided a valid routing and account information for direct deposit purposes, the IRS said. Paper checks will go out throughout January, and some people may be mailed debit cards.

How Do You Use The Get My Payment Tool?

The IRS has provided the Get My Payment tool for individuals to determine when they can expect their stimulus money to arrive. The Get My Payment tool is available on the IRS.gov website in both English and Spanish.

To use the tool, individuals will need to enter their social security number, date of birth, street address, and zip code. Once the proper information is provided, the tool will give the status of when the stimulus payment is anticipated to be deposited or mailed.

There’s A Glitch With Your Bank Tax Prep Software Or The Irs

This explanation may be the most frustrating of all for people wondering where the heck their stimulus checks are. But a mistake made by your bank, the IRS, or the tax-prep software you used to file returns could screw up your stimulus payment.

As the Washington Post reported, the stimulus payments for millions of taxpayers may be delayed because of a glitch with tax-prep software firms, such as TurboTax, H& R Block, and Jackson Hewitt. The IRS might not have direct deposit information for you if you used one of these services and received an advance on your tax refund, or if you paid for the service by deducting the fee from your tax refund. And if the IRS doesn’t have your direct deposit info, your stimulus check will be delayed. If you think this situation applies to you, use the IRS Get My Payment app to provide the agency with your direct deposit details.

Who Can Get A Stimulus Check

Stimulus Checks and Dependent Payments: Everything You ...

As you have probably noticed, only those who are eligible for a stimulus check will receive one. who is eligible for stimulus checks? Individuals with a Social Security Number. This broad term is not the only parameter that affects eligibility to a government stimulus check.

With the first and second stimulus checks, individuals who claimed as dependent were not eligible to receive the check. However, those who claimed dependents under the age of 17 were eligible for the payment. The same goes for the third stimulus check.

Another factor that affects stimulus checks is income:

  • To receive any of the three checks, single tax filers must have an income of under $75,000.
  • Heads of a house with an annual income of $112,500 are eligible for stimulus checks.

What To Know About Adding Your Direct Deposit Details

You can’t use the Get My Payment tool to sign up for a new account or correct details about your payment. Even if the IRS is unable to deliver your payment to a bank account and the money is returned to the government, you won’t be able to correct the details online — the IRS says it will send the money again by mail.

The extended tax deadline was May 17. With the agency’s delay in processing tax returns, trying to register for a new direct deposit account with your 2020 tax return won’t get you into the system quickly enough. However, if you haven’t submitted your taxes yet, signing up for a new direct deposit account could still get you IRS money faster in the future, such as tax refunds or the upcoming child tax credit.

How Will I Know When My Stimulus Payment Has Been Deposited

As always, you can use online banking or the U.S. Bank Mobile App to monitor your account balance and transactions as often as you wish.

To be notified in real time, we recommend setting up a transaction alert . You can choose to be notified by text1 or email whenever a deposit or withdrawal is made on your account.

What If You Have Trouble With The Tool

To use the Get My Payment tool, you must first verify your identity by answering security questions. If the information you enter does not match IRS records, you will receive an error message. To avoid this:

  • Double-check the information requested
  • Make sure what you enter is accurate
  • Try entering your street address in a different way and
  • Use the US Postal Services ZIP Lookup tool to look up the standard version of your address, and enter it into exactly as it appears on file with the Postal Service.

If your answers do not match the IRS records three times, youll be locked out of Get My Payment for security reasons. If that happens, you must wait 24 hours and try again. If you cant verify your identity, you wont be able to use Get My Payment. Unfortunately, theres no fix for that: the IRS says not to not contact them.

However, if you verified your identity and received Payment Status Not Available, this means that the IRS cannot determine your eligibility for a payment right now. There are several reasons this could happen, including:

  • You didnt file either a 2018 or 2019 tax return or
  • Your recently filed return has not been fully processed.

Again, the IRS says theres no fix for that and you should not contact them.

Amount And Status Of Your Payment

How to track your stimulus check

To find the amount of the third payment, create or view your online account or refer to IRS Notice 1444-C, which we mailed after sending the payment.

If you are sent a plus-up Economic Impact Payment after your 2020 tax return is processed:

  • The amount of your initial third payment will no longer show in your online account. You will only see the amount of your plus-up payment.
  • The status of your initial third payment will no longer show in Get My Payment. You will only see the status of your plus-up payment.

When Will Your Stimulus Check Arrive

The stimulus payments are being distributed to taxpayers either by direct deposit or by paper checks or debit cards arriving by mail. If youve been paying your taxes via direct deposit, the IRS should already have your banking information on file and will make the payment directly to your bank account.

For direct deposit, the IRS uses data already in its system to determine which bank account to send the payment to. That most likely happens by attaching a routing and account number to your 2020 or 2019 tax filing, as well as inputting one earlier in 2020 for receiving your first stimulus check. Those receiving payments by mail will have to wait a little longer.

This round, the Treasury Department is also working with the Bureau of the Fiscal Service to identify federal records of recent payments to and from the government to find a possible bank account alternative for delivering stimulus payments as a direct deposit. The move helped accelerate the stimulus check delivery timeline, the IRS said in a statement.

In most cases, individuals arent required to take action to receive their checks and are discouraged from contacting the IRS, according to a Treasury Department release.

The IRS and Treasury Department anticipate sending out more tranches on a weekly basis moving forward.

Can I Track My Payment

The IRS reopened its “Get My Payment” website following the passage of the American Rescue Plan, allowing people to track when they might receive their stimulus checks. The IRS created this portal last year for the $1,200 stimulus checks directed by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security, or CARES, Act.

When people check the “Get My Payment” site for the new $1,400 checks, they typically see one of several messages.

First, some people will see that their payment has been processed, along with a payment date and whether the payment will be sent via direct deposit or mail. If a check is sent by mail, the IRS will either send a paper check or a pre-paid debit card.

Others may see a message that they are eligible, but their payment hasn’t been processed and therefore there’s no payment date available.

Who Is Eligible For A Payment

Eligible individuals will receive checks of up to $600 for individuals and up to $600 for each qualifying child. The amount of the checks would start to phaseout for those earning more than $75,000 .

As before, dependents who are 17 and older are not eligible for the child payment. This is important to understand because there had been some discussions about changing the eligibility for dependents: that did not happen.

You can find out more about phaseouts and eligibility here. Additional information is also available on the Internal Revenue Service website at IRS.gov/EIP.

What Does Need More Information Mean

Others may see a “need more information” message, which the tax agency said means the payment was returned to the IRS because the U.S. Postal Service wasn’t able to deliver the check. In that case, people can use the “Get My Payment” site to provide the IRS with bank information but the tax agency said that only people who get the “need more information” message will be able to add their bank information to the portal.
