How To Get Your Tax Return By Direct Deposit
Whether you file your taxes electronically or send in a paper tax return, you can elect for direct deposit. The IRS processes most refunds in less than 21 calendar days. You can use the Wheres My Refund? tool to check on the status of your refund.
To set up direct deposit, do the following:
Note: If youre a Chime member, all you have to do is choose direct deposit on your tax return software. You then can input your Chime Spending Account number and corresponding routing number.
A couple of other things to note:
- Taxpayers may have a refund applied to their prepaid debit card. Many reloadable prepaid cards have account and routing numbers that could be provided to the IRS. But check with the financial institution to make sure the card can be used and verify the routing number and account number, which may be different from the card number.
- There are mobile apps that may allow for direct deposit of tax refunds. They must have routing and account numbers associated with them that can be entered on a tax return. Check with the mobile app provider to confirm what numbers to use.
The Get My Payment Irs Tool And How To Provide Current Bank Information
The Treasury has created an online tool where direct deposit information can be supplied to the IRS. Here is what you should do:
- On April 15, 2020, the IRS set up this online tool that allows you to track the status of your stimulus payment, and it allows you to provide your direct deposit information.
- Add the bank account number of your account.
- Add the routing number of your bank.
- Do not include a check number.
- Double-check that you have entered the correct numbers entering an incorrect number could result in a significant delay of payment.
You can use the Get My Payment tool to find out the projected date for when your deposit is scheduled to arrive in your bank account. The Get My Payment tool will also tell you if youre set to receive payment by paper check, along with a scheduled arrival date in the mail.
The tool, however, doesnt always work, and your inquiry may result in a Payment Status Not Available message, or it may need to be modified to take into account the second stimulus payment.
While Get My Payment allows you to give direct deposit information to the IRS, you cannot change bank information with the IRS if it already has an account for you on file. This is to help protect against potential fraud. You also cant change your form of payment if the IRS has already scheduled it for delivery.

While Get My Payment allows you to give bank direct deposit information to the IRS, you cannot change bank information with the IRS if it already has an account for you on file. Why? As the IRS explains, “To help protect against potential fraud, the tool also does not allow people to change bank account information already on file with the IRS.” You also can’t change your form of payment if the IRS has already scheduled it for delivery.
If you haven’t filed your 2019 taxes , you might want to do that now. Many people can file federal tax returns for free, and tax-prep services like TurboTax and H& R Block are easy to use. The deadline for filing taxes in 2020 was moved from April 15 to July 15.
The Get My Payment app was designed for people who file federal taxes. The IRS has a separate spot online where non-tax filers, including many low-income earners, can enter their information to get stimulus checks for themselves and qualifying dependents.
Who gets stimulus checks first? The Treasury Department says that the first recipients of stimulus checks officially called “economic impact payments,” part of the $2 trillion CARES Act to provide economic relief amid the coronavirus pandemic were taxpayers who have already filed their 2019 tax returns and have provided direct deposit information to the IRS. Many of these payments began showing up in taxpayers’ bank accounts on Wednesday, April 15, or even earlier.

It’s Cheaper To Send Your Refund Through Direct Deposit Instead Of Paper Check
Each paper refund check issued costs US taxpayers more than $1, but it only costs a dime for each direct deposit made, according to the IRS. In 2020, 125.3 million refunds were issued, with over 23 million sent by mail, according to Bankrate.
That means in 2020, it cost taxpayers roughly $23.3 million for paper check refunds to be sent out and about $10.2 million for direct deposit.
