I Am Not Typically Required To File A Tax Return Can I Still Receive My Payment
Yes. The IRS will use the information on the Form SSA-1099 or Form RRB-1099 to generate Economic Impact Payments to recipients of benefits reflected in the Form SSA-1099 or Form RRB-1099 who are not required to file a tax return and did not file a return for 2018 or 2019. This includes senior citizens, Social Security recipients and railroad retirees who are not otherwise required to file a tax return.
Since the IRS would not have information regarding any dependents for these people, each person would receive $1,200 per person, without the additional amount for any dependents at this time.
More Money For Certain Families
One big change with third stimulus checks was that an extra $1,400 was tacked on to your payment for any dependent in the family. For the first- and second-round payments, the additional amount allowed $500 for first-round payments and $600 in the second round was only given for dependent children age 16 or younger. As a result, families with older children, including college students age 23 or younger, or with elderly parents living with them, didn’t get the extra money added to their previous stimulus payments. Do I Need To Take Action
People who filed a tax return for 2019 or 2018
No additional action is needed by taxpayers who:
- have already filed their tax returns this year for 2019. The IRS will use this information to calculate the payment amount.
- havent filed yet for 2019 but filed a 2018 federal tax return. For these taxpayers the IRS will use their information from 2018 tax filings to make the Economic Impact Payment calculations.
People who arent typically required to file a tax return
Social Security and Railroad Retirement recipients who are not typically required to file a tax return need to take no action. The IRS will use the information on the Form SSA-1099 and Form RRB-1099 to generate Economic Impact Payments of $1,200 to these individuals even if they did not file tax returns in 2018 or 2019. Recipients will receive these payments as a direct deposit or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their benefits. Social Security Disability Insurance recipients are also part of this group who dont need to take action.
For Social Security, Railroad retirees and SSDI who have qualifying children, they can take an additional step to receive $500 per qualifying child.
The IRS will soon provide guidance for these individuals on the steps to take to get their payment as soon as possible.

Second $600 Stimulus Check Details
While the CAA legislation, under which the stimulus payments were funded, required that the second round of payments be issued by Jan. 15, 2021, some second round Economic Impact Payments may still be in the mail and delivered by the end of February. The IRS however has confirmed has issued all first and second Economic Impact Payments it is legally permitted to issue, based on information on file for eligible people.

How Much Will Adult Dependents Get
Adult dependents qualify under the American Rescue Plan for a third stimulus check. This means that college students, elderly relatives and disabled adults can get a maximum payments of $1,400 each, depending on the AGI of the taxpayer who claims them.
The text for the new legislation expanded the meaning of the term dependent to include both qualifying children and adults. For reference, the first and second stimulus checks limited additional payments to dependents under the age of 17.
So now, if you file your joint taxes with one child under 17, one college student over 17 and one elderly relative as dependents, you could get a maximum third stimulus payment of $7,000 .
For a comparison with the second stimulus check, you would only qualify for $1,800 as a joint filer with the same number of dependents and ages . Children or adult dependents over the age limit could not get the additional payment, and your college student and elderly dependents could not qualify for a stimulus check of their own either.
How Will The Stimulus Checks Affect My Taxes

The IRS doesnt consider your stimulus checks taxable income. So you will not have to report them on your tax return or pay income taxes for them.
If you are an eligible recipient who didnt get the first or second stimulus check, you can claim a recovery rebate credit to increase your tax refund or lower your tax liability.
This means that if you expect to get money back on your 2020 tax return, you could get a bigger refund depending on how much stimulus money you are owed. And comparatively, if you have to pay a tax bill, you can use the recovery rebate credit to offset it and get a refund for the remaining amount.
Taxpayers this year will look to their tax refunds as another source of extra money during the pandemic. In 2020, the IRS paid out more than $2,500 for the average tax refund. This year, it is expecting over 150 million tax returns to be filed.
The 2021 tax season starts on February 12. You will have to file your 2020 tax return by April 15.

When Will My Third Stimulus Check Arrive
The Treasury Department already started delivering the third round of $1,400 stimulus payments on the weekend of March 13-14. But many taxpayers will not receive payment from their bank until March 17, which is the effective date when banks get the money from the government.
The IRS will make third stimulus payments via direct deposit first. Those who have their bank account on file with the IRS based on a tax return from 2020 of 2019 will get payments earlier. Paper checks and prepaid debit cards will be mailed after.
For reference, the direct deposit payments for thesecond stimulus check started arriving as early as December 29, two days after President Donald Trump signed the $900 billion economic relief and government funding bill. And paper checks were mailed out on December 30.
Anyone who receives Social Security retirement benefits, Social Security survivor benefits, Social Security disability benefits, Supplemental Security Income , Railroad Retirement benefits or VA benefits and has their bank account on-file with the IRS will also get their check via direct deposit.
Note that the IRS has said that there could be processing delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As many as eight million eligible recipients may have not received their first or second stimulus checks as of January 2021. And President Biden signed an executive order on January 22, asking the Treasury Department to deliver direct payments to all of those qualifying recipients.

How Does The Stimulus Check Calculator Estimate Reduced Payments

The payment amount phases out completely once a filers AGI exceeds the maximum AGI for the filing status. What If My Check Doesn’t Arrive
Within 15 days of mailing your check , you will receive a notice in the mail indicating the method of payment, the amount of payment, and an IRS phone number to call if you didn’t receive your payment.
Both the payment and notice will be mailed to your last known address the IRS has on file. If you have recently moved, you should file a Form 8822 with the IRS and a change of address notice with the U.S. Postal Service. This will ensure correspondence and payments from the IRS will be sent to your new address.
When Will The New Stimulus Payments/checks Be Made
The IRS will be responsible for making these stimulus payment checks and Treasury Secretary Mnuchin, whose department oversees the IRS, said that payments go out within a week of the bill being formally approved. This means payments could hit bank accounts before the end of the year. Payments would be made in multiple batches and if all goes according to plan the first round of payments would begin on 12/28 . How Will They Send My Stimulus Checks
The IRS will send out the second stimulus checks via direct deposit, paper check and economic impact payment card.
For reference, the majority of the first stimulus check recipients have received their payment via direct deposit. So if you set up direct deposit on a past tax return, you should have gotten your direct cash payment in your on-file bank account by about April 15. That leaves anyone getting a stimulus check in the mail last in line, especially if they have a high AGI.
The IRSs free online portal called Get My Payment allows Americans to track the status of their first and second stimulus check.
If you are required to file a tax return, but you have not done so for 2018 or 2019, then youll need to file a 2019 return to receive a check. But if you were not required to file for tax years 2018 or 2019, the IRS is offering an online tool that allows you to enter your personal and bank account information so that you can get your stimulus check.
