How much money other countries paid out in stimulus checks

The second batch of aid includes about 17 million direct deposit payments, with a total value of more than $38 billion. These payments began processing last Friday, the IRS said. Some Americans may have seen the direct deposit payments as pending or as provisional payments in their accounts before Wednesdays official payment date, the agency added.

The Treasury Department has also mailed nearly 15 million paper checks totaling $34 billion to Americans who dont receive the money by direct deposit, the IRS said. About 5 million prepaid debit cards totaling $11 billion were also sent out.

Paper checks and debit cards began processing last Friday and will continue to be sent by mail over the next few weeks, according to the IRS.

How Stimulus Checks Work

Specific criteria for stimulus checks vary depending on the legislation Congress passes for each specific payment. They can be sent to all taxpayers or only to a subset based on income limits. In some cases, Americans have had to meet other criteria, such as being a government employee, in order to receive a stimulus check.

Whatever the specific critiera, once the legislation is passed, the IRS begins sending checks or direct deposits to stimulus recipients. These payments come out of the U.S. Treasury reserves, and the government counts on increases in spending, hiring, and overall gross domestic product to offset the cost in the future. They are typically not treated as taxable income.

Most recently, in March 2021, the American Rescue Plan Act included cash payments of $1,400 per person for most Americans.

In January of this year, the U.S. Treasury sent out about 158 million second stimulus checks , but fewer households are expected to receive a third stimulus check because of the lower income phaseouts .

Stimulus Checks: $804 Billion

The US government has sent $804 billion directly to low- and middle-income individuals and families via three rounds of stimulus payments that were delivered via direct deposit, checks or debit cards.

Each round had slightly different qualifying parameters, but lawmakers purposely didn’t put too many limitations on the checks in order to get the cash out as quickly as possible. The lowest-income Americans got the full amount and the value gradually phased out for those earning more. The first round, which sent payments worth up to $1,200 per person, cost taxpayers the most — $388 billion. The second round of payments were worth up to $600 per person and cost $142 billion.

Lawmakers narrowed eligibility for the last round so that it excluded individuals who earn at least $80,000 a year and families who earn at least $120,000 a year. The IRS has sent $1,400 per person this year, at a cost of $274 billion to date.

Some states, like California and , have issued their own stimulus payments to some residents in addition to the federal money.

Those who make more wouldnât get payments.

In addition to the amounts for adults, parents would get up to $1,400 more for every child on their tax returns. That includes adult children, like college students, and those with permanent disabilities, unlike last yearâs stimulus payments.

So if youâre a family of four with a household income under $150,000, you should get $5,600.
