How Many Stimulus Checks Will There Be

The Governor Has Signaled That Stimulus Money Is On The Table

Where’s The Money: Could there be a fourth stimulus check?

Earlier this week, Governor Gavin Newsom introduced a $286 billion budget proposal for the state of California’s 2022 budget year. But while the state is expecting the massive budget surplus noted above, the budget proposal did not include another round of stimulus checks.

While that may have been disappointing to California residents, it was not a sign that there will be no more stimulus money for California residents in 2022. Rather, the governor made it clear earlier this week that he expects to include more stimulus money in the budget when it’s revised in May.

“We expect in the May revise language when I update the budget that we are likely to have an additional rebate to the taxpayers,”he said. “No new taxes in our budget.”

A Fourth Stimulus Payment Is Currently Not In Any Proposal

Researchers have found that the first three stimulus checks helped reduce hardships like food insufficiency and financial instability. So far, during the pandemic, eligible adults have received a max of $3,200 and children have received up to $2,500. For struggling families, that’s not enough to bounce back from lost wages and benefits.

Since the American Rescue Plan, the White House has proposed several packages, including the American Jobs Plan and the Build Back Better agenda, but those don’t call for more direct aid. President Joe Biden is “open to a range of ideas” regarding stimulus aid, according to a June statement by White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, but he already put forward what would be “the most effective for the short term.”

The scaled-back compromise of the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure deal, which was agreed to in the Senate on July 28, doesn’t include anything related to “human infrastructure” — it doesn’t address child care, improved wages or job training. Instead, those elements are to be included in the proposed $3.5 trillion reconciliation package, which is likely to be scaled back. The White House has outlined its “Build Back Better Agenda,” incorporating lower health care costs, tax cuts and investments in teachers and schools. Senate Democrats are working on the economic plan, but the process of approving final versions of the bill in Congress could take a while.

Will You Get A Fourth Stimulus Check

If youre hoping for a fourth stimulus check, its very unlikely. Similar to student loan cancellation, its challenging for Biden to support more stimulus check and also argue that the economy is recovering. While the Covid-19 pandemic is ongoing, the high vaccination rates, stock market recovery and employment statistics have improved over the past year. That said, there are still millions of Americans who are struggling financially as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. This includes student loan borrowers who recently got more student loan relief, which is one reason that Biden extended student loan relief for 90 more days. . However, it also includes renters who no longer may have access to federal rent assistance. .

The first three stimulus check were limited based on income and other requirements, so they werent universally provided to all Americans. Congress is unlikely to support a fourth stimulus check, let alone a recurring $2,000 a month stimulus check. Biden didnt support $2,000 a month stimulus checks during his presidential campaign and is unlikely to support recurring stimulus checks now. That said, Vice President Kamala Harris has previously supported $2,000 a month stimulus checks for the duration of the pandemic. .

The petition has a goal of 4.5 million signatures. Despite the momentum, Congress or the president doesnt appear ready to issue a fourth stimulus check, whether one-time or monthly.

Main Street Lending Program

On March 23, 2020, the Fed announced the Main Street Lending Program, which set up an SPV to purchase up to $600 billion in small- and medium-sized business loans. Under the plan, the Fed purchased a 95% stake of each loan, with the bank keeping 5%. To qualify, businesses needed to have either 10,000 or fewer employees or up to $2.5 billion in 2019 revenue.

On July 17, 2020, the Fed extended the program to nonprofit organizations that didnt have endowments larger than $3 billion, had either fewer than 15,000 employees or less than $5 billion in 2019 revenue, and met a number of other additional requirements. The program purchased stakes in both new loans and loan extensions.

Under the CARES Act, the Treasury Department planned to make a $75 billion equity investment in the SPV. The terms of the loans were five years, with interest deferred for one year and principal payments deferred for two years.

On Oct. 30, 2020, the Fed reduced the minimum size of the loans that the program would purchase. It continued to purchase stakes in loans until Jan. 8, 2021, and it will continue to be funded until its assets mature or are sold.

Taxation Of Third Stimulus Checks

Question: Will my third stimulus check be taxed later?

Answer: No. As with the first two rounds of payments, your third stimulus check is actually just an advanced payment of the Recovery Rebate tax credit for the 2021 tax year. As such, it won’t be included in your taxable income.

You also won’t be required to repay any stimulus check payment when filing your 2021 tax return even if your third stimulus check is greater than your 2021 credit. If your third stimulus check is less than your 2021 credit, you’ll get the difference when you file your 2021 return next year. So, it’s a win-win situation for you!

The State Of California Has Plenty Of Extra Money In The Budget To Earmark For Stimulus Checks

The direct payments that were issued to California residents in 2021 were possible because of a massive budget surplus that was in excess of the state constitutional limit. This required the state of California to issue the money from the budget surplus back to taxpayers in some form — and the state chose to do so via stimulus checks that were issued to low- to moderate-income earners in the state.

This type of budget surplus doesn’t happen often. In fact, it’s only occurred twice in the last four decades, but it’s expected to happen again during the 2022 fiscal year, which starts in July. It appears that there’s going to be a lot of money left over, too, as California is expected to have a $31 billion surplus in the budget for 2022.

What that means is that the state will likely be required to issue the money from the budget surplus back to California residents in some form or fashion — and it’s likely to do so, at least in part, by issuing another stimulus payment. What exactly that stimulus payment will look like, though, is anyone’s guess.

How Many Stimulus Checks Did Americans Get

In total, Americans received three stimulus checks since 2020.

The first round of checks was authorized under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, that President Donald Trump signed on March 27, 2020.

The payments for the first checks were $1,200 per person, or $2,400 for those filing jointly, plus $500 per qualifying child.

In December 2020, the second round of stimulus checks was sent out as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act.

The payments for the second checks were $600 per person, or $1,200 for married individuals, plus $600 for each qualifying child.

One year following the first checks, the third round of stimulus checks was sent out earlier in March under the American Rescue Plan.

The payments for the third checks was $1,400 per person, or $2,800 for married couples, plus an additional $1,400 per eligible child.

Are Stimulus Checks Taxable

  • 12:29 ET, Jan 24 2022

WITH tax season beginning, many Americans are wondering whether their stimulus checks are subject to taxation.

In 2021, millions of Americans received a stimulus check worth up to $1,400.

This was the third round of stimulus checks issued amidst the ongoing Covid pandemic.

That payment was in addition to the child tax credit payments that began last July, offering up to $300 per month per child to qualified parents.

Some individual states also issued aid to residents.

The second round of California’sGolden State Stimulus program, for example, provided residents with 8.1million payments worth more than $5.8billion, a spokesperson for the California Franchise Tax Board told The Sun.

Below, we explain whether these stimulus checks are subject to taxation upon filing a return in 2022.

What Else Should I Know

Will There Be a Fourth Stimulus Check? How Much Will It Be ...

Five things.

  • If you owe back taxes or child support, youll still get an IRS payment if you otherwise qualify. In this round, if you owe child support, your check will not shrink.

  • If you havent filed a tax return in the last few years, the IRS may not have your current information and bank account details.

  • If you don’t qualify now, you might still get a break later. If your 2020 tax return shows you made too much to qualify for this third stimulus check, you may not get a payment now even if you lost your job or income in 2021. However, you might be made whole later . Thats because these IRS payments are technically an advance on a 2021 tax credit thats available all year. So if your adjusted gross income in 2021 ends up being under the limit or you add a dependent, you might be able to claim a stimulus check on your taxes via the tax credit when you file your 2021 tax return .

  • When it comes to the age limit for dependents, the legislation leans on the existing rules for claiming tax dependents. Under those rules, adult parents and college students you financially support might qualify under certain circumstances.

  • Watch your mailbox and your bank account. For the last two rounds of stimulus checks, the U.S. Treasury sent people letters in the mail after it disbursed money to them. Those letters indicated how the payment was made, how much it was for and provided an IRS phone number for questions.

Avoid Processing Delays When Claiming The 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit

The IRS strongly encourages people to have all the information they need to file an accurate return to avoid processing delays. If the return includes errors or is incomplete, it may require further review while the IRS corrects the error, which may slow the tax refund.

To claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, individuals will need to know the total amount of their third-round Economic Impact Payment, including any Plus-Up Payments, they received. People can view the total amount of their third-round Economic Impact Payments through their individual Online Account. The IRS will also send Letter 6475 through March to those who were issued third-round payments confirming the total amount for tax year 2021. For married individuals filing a joint return with their spouse, each spouse will need to log into their own Online Account or review their own letter for their portion of their couple’s total payment.

The IRS urges recipients of stimulus payments to carefully review their tax return before filing. Having this payment information available while preparing the tax return will help individuals determine if they are eligible to claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit for missing third-round stimulus payments. If eligible for the credit, they must file a 2021 tax return. Using the total amount of the third payments from the individual’s online account or Letter 6475 when filing a tax return can reduce errors and avoid delays in processing while the IRS corrects the tax return.

Whos Eligible For The Latest Stimulus Check

THERE is certain criteria that must be met in order to claim your third stimulus check.

You could be entitled to a payment if the following is true:

    • You are not a dependent of another taxpayer
    • You have a Social Security number valid for employment

Your adjusted gross income must also not exceed:

    • $160,000 if married and filing a joint return
    • $120,000 if filing as head of household or
    • $80,000 for single applicants

The latest round of cash will start to be phased out for individual tax payers who earn $75,000 a year.

But once you hit the $80,000 annual gross income limit, you wont be able eligible for the help at all.

Like the single-taxpayer cut off, theres a $120,000 AGI cap on how much heads of households can earn to be eligible for the help.

A head of household is a single-taxpayer who claims a dependant.

Youll get a reduced payment if you earn between £112,500 and $120,000 AGI. Anyone earning less will qualify for the full amount.

Don’t Miss: Stimulus Check 3 When Will I Get It

Will There Be More Stimulus Checks In Future

As things currently stand, a fourth federal stimulus round appears to be unlikely.

Currently, Mr Biden’s Build Back Better Agenda does not include stimulus payments.

And in May, White House secretary Jen Psaki told reporters that the stimulus checks were not free and that another round wasnt in Bidens plans.

Along with getting Biden on board, two corporate Democrats Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema would need to get convinced as well.

This is unlikely because the US is no longer in the heights of the pandemic and is dealing with inflation, as there is huge consumer demand that the supply is not meeting.

Stimulus checks serve the purpose of giving taxpayers a financial boost during an economic downturn.

And that isn’t happening at the moment.

But there has been some mounting pressure to do so 50 Democratic members of the House of Representatives wrote a letter suggesting recurring direct checks, also known as universal basic income.

It read: Another one-time round of checks would provide a temporary lifeline, but when that money runs out, families will once again struggle to pay for basic necessities.

“One more check is not enough during this public health and economic crisis.

It was backed by US Representative for New York Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Minnesota’s Ilhan Omar.

Democrats have backed a figure of $2,000, although there aren’t currently any official bills debating a fourth round of checks.

We explain how to track down the latest $1,400 stimulus check.
