What Will The Status Report Look Like
Based on previous versions of the “Get My Payment” portal, the tool will probably display results similar to the following:
1. Payment Status. Either a payment has been processed, a payment date is available, and payment was sent either by direct deposit or mail or you’re eligible, but a payment has not been processed and a payment date is not available.
2. Need More Information. You’re eligible for a payment, but the IRS doesn’t have your direct deposit information. You’ll have the opportunity to provide your bank information once you properly verified your identity.
3. Payment Status Not Available. The IRS can’t determine your eligibility for a payment at that time. For example, if you didn’t file either a recent tax return, or you recently filed but the return hasn’t been fully processed.
What Does The Stimulus Check Portal Do
Based on its past performance, we expect the updated “Get My Payment” tool to let you:
-
Check the status of your stimulus payment
-
Confirm your payment type and
-
Get a projected direct deposit or paper check delivery date .
-

We don’t know yet if you’ll be able to enter or change your bank account information to have your payment directly deposited into your account. That was allowed for first-round stimulus checks, but not for second-round payments. The IRS already has bank account information for millions of Americans from recent tax returns, tax payments, last year’s non-filers tool, and other federal payments that are sent to you. It’s possible that the tax agency will limit direct deposit payments to bank accounts that they already have, and then send paper checks or debit cards to everyone else.
Earlier versions of the portal were updated no more than once daily, typically overnight. That will probably be the case again. As a result, there’s no reason to check the portal more than once per day after it’s updated for third-round payments.
What Does Need More Information Mean
Others may see a “need more information” message, which the tax agency said means the payment was returned to the IRS because the U.S. Postal Service wasn’t able to deliver the check. In that case, people can use the “Get My Payment” site to provide the IRS with bank information but the tax agency said that only people who get the “need more information” message will be able to add their bank information to the portal.

How Do I Get Help Filing A 2020 Tax Return To Claim My Eip
The IRS recommends electronic filing, and we agree. It is a faster, more secure option. Paper forms will take much longer to be processed by IRS. You may qualify for free e-file software.
You can also call the Vermont 2-1-1 hotline and follow the menu options for tax preparation. Through this service you may be able to schedule an appointment with a free Volunteer Income Tax Preparation Assistance site. These sites are staffed by trained volunteers. They provide free preparation services to taxpayers who meet eligibility requirements.
Also, you can find Form 1040 and Form 1040 instructions on the IRS website. The instructions for the “Recovery Rebate Credit” are found on pages 57 – 59.
I Got An Eip Card Last Time Will I Get My Stimulus Money On The Same Card

No. You may get a new card, or you may get your payment by paper check. The IRS and Treasury Department say to expect to receive these in the mail if you didnt receive a direct deposit in early Jan.
EIP cards arrive in plain envelopes from Money Network Cardholder Services, so be sure to watch your mailbox so you dont overlook yours. You can learn more about this payment method at www.eipcard.com.

What Can I Do If I Have Not Received My Eip Money By Those Deadlines
If you have not received all or some portion of your Economic Impact Payments by the deadlines above, you will have to file a 2020 tax return and claim these amounts. You claim them on line 30 of the 2020 Form 1040 as a “Recovery Rebate Credit“. This is another name for the EIP stimulus payments. If you did not get all or a portion of the EIP payments in advance, then you can claim them on line 30 of your tax return for 2020.
Will The Irs Reload A Prior Pre
Some people who received one or both of their first two stimulus payments on a pre-paid debit card may wonder if the IRS will reload that card with the $1,400 for the latest round of payments. The answer is no, the IRS says.
If the IRS now has bank account information for you, it will send the money via direct deposit. If not, it will either issue a check or a pre-paid debit card, but the latter will come in the form of a new card, the tax agency said.
People should look for a white envelope with the return address “Economic Impact Payment Card” accompanied by a U.S. Treasury Department seal. The card says “Visa” on the front, and the issuing bank, MetaBank, on the back.

What If You Have Changed Your Address Or Bank Account
The IRS will use the data already in its systems to send the new payments:
- If your direct deposit information is on file, you will receive the payment that way.
- If your direct deposit information is not on file, you will receive the payment as a check or debit card in the mail.
Some payments may have been sent to an account that may be closed or no longer active. By law, the financial institution must return the payment to the IRS, they cannot hold and issue the payment to an individual when the account is no longer active.
The IRS cannot change payment information, including bank account or mailing information. If an eligible taxpayer does not get a payment or it is less than expected, it may be claimed on the 2020 tax return as the Recovery Rebate Credit. Remember, Economic Impact Payments are an advance payment of what will be called the Recovery Rebate Credit on the 2020 Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR.
How To Use Irs ‘get My Payment’
The IRS also updated frequently asked questions Saturday on how to use the “Get My Payment” tool, which requires users to enter their full Social Security number or tax ID number, date of birth, street address and ZIP code.
But before you start entering your information hourly, the IRS says the tool updates once per day, usually overnight and that people should not call the IRS. Our phone assistors don’t have information beyond what’s available on IRS.gov.
The tool will show the status of when a payment has been issued and the payment date for direct deposit or mail, according to the frequently asked questions. Some will get a message that says “Payment Status Not Available.”
“If you get this message, either we have not yet processed your payment, or you are not eligible for a payment,” the IRS said. “We will continue to send the 2021 Economic Impact Payment to eligible individuals throughout 2021.”
And others will get a “Need More Information” message when using the tool if the payment was returned to the IRS because the post office was unable to deliver it for another reason.
If your address has changed the IRS says the easiest way to update is to “file your 2020 tax return with your current address, if you havent already done so. Once we receive your current address, we will reissue your payment.”

Q How Much Will My Third Stimulus Check Be For
A. Your third stimulus check depends on your 2020 or 2019 income .
Qualifying group | |
An AGI of $150,500 or less | An AGI $160,000 or more |
Dependents of all ages: $1,400 | $1,400 apiece, no cap — but only if caretakers make under the above limits |
* This framework by the IRS was designed for taxpayers who are living and working in the U.S., so expats should ensure theyre looking at their AGI and not their gross income when determining their eligibility, especially if theyre claiming the foreign earned income exclusion. |
Additional Payments: If your third stimulus payment is based on their 2019 return and your 2020 return makes you eligible for a larger payment, the IRS will redetermine your eligibility and issue a supplementary payment later this summer.
You can estimate your own payment amount with H& R Blocks Stimulus Check Calculator.
Q. Will I have to pay back my stimulus check?
A. No, you will not have to pay back any amount of your Recovery Rebate Credit, even if you experience a pay hike in 2021.
Q. Will this round of stimulus checks affect my tax return this year?
Q. Will I owe tax on this third stimulus check in 2022 or have to pay it back?
A. No, the third stimulus payment is considered a 2021 tax credit , not income, so you will not need to pay taxes on it or pay it back.
Q. Do I need to sign up for the third stimulus check it or sign off on it?
Q. If I live abroad, when will I get my third stimulus check if I qualify?
Check Get My Payment To See If A Third Payment Is Scheduled
People can check to see if the their third payment has been scheduled using the Get My Payment tool on IRS.gov. The tool does not show the amount of the third Economic Impact Payment.
The form of payment for the third EIP may be different than earlier stimulus payments. More people are receiving direct deposits, while those receiving a payment in the mail may get a paper check or an EIP Card. IRS and the Treasury Department urge eligible people to check Get My Payment and see whether their payment has been scheduled for delivery as a direct deposit or by mail as a check or EIP card.

What If You Have Trouble With The Tool
To use the Get My Payment tool, you must first verify your identity by answering security questions. If the information you enter does not match IRS records, you will receive an error message. To avoid this:
- Double-check the information requested
- Make sure what you enter is accurate
- Try entering your street address in a different way and
- Use the US Postal Services ZIP Lookup tool to look up the standard version of your address, and enter it into exactly as it appears on file with the Postal Service.
If your answers do not match the IRS records three times, youll be locked out of Get My Payment for security reasons. If that happens, you must wait 24 hours and try again. If you cant verify your identity, you wont be able to use Get My Payment. Unfortunately, theres no fix for that: the IRS says not to not contact them.
However, if you verified your identity and received Payment Status Not Available, this means that the IRS cannot determine your eligibility for a payment right now. There are several reasons this could happen, including:
- You didnt file either a 2018 or 2019 tax return or
- Your recently filed return has not been fully processed.
Again, the IRS says theres no fix for that and you should not contact them.
Can I Use The Get My Payment Tool To Track My Payment

Yes. The Get My Payment tool is live.
Although the IRS Get My Payment portal hastily created in the spring was intended to clarify the process of getting a stimulus payment, it caused confusion for many Americans. Early volume left some users waiting to use the portal at all, while others saw messages for days or weeks that their payment status wasnt available.
The IRS has recently updated its Economic Impact Payment Frequently Asked Questions page with information about the second round of payments. It has asked people not to call the agency for information, as customer service representatives dont have more info than whats provided online.
In the meantime, we have a guide to your second stimulus payment here, along with a calculator to help you determine how much you may receive. Well update this story as we learn more about the payment timeline.

If you’re still missing your third payment, use the IRS Get My Payment tool. It’s easy to use and free for everyone.
In the dark about your stimulus payment? You can find out more through the IRS website tracker.
If your third stimulus check hasn’t arrived yet, you’re likely becoming concerned about what’s happened to it. But don’t get too worried yet — start by checking your bank account because it may have a pending deposit.Iit’s also possible the check is stuck en route in the mail. Once you figure out your payment status, you may find that you’re owed a “plus-up” supplemental payment if the IRS didn’t send you enough stimulus money.
However, there could be information you need to act on if that’s the case, the IRS online tracking tool will let you know. It’ll also show if you need to file a payment trace for that missing third check. The tool isn’t perfect, but it’s a great way to learn your payment status. It won’t tell you how much money to expect — not everyone gets $1,400 — but you can use our stimulus calculator to estimate that amount.
In mid-July, the IRS will begin disbursing advance child tax credit checks for up to $300 a month for those eligible — you can use this separate calculator for that. Here’s how to claim up to thousands in child care expenses and what we know about a possible fourth stimulus payment. We have updated this story.
There’s A Glitch With Your Bank Tax Prep Software Or The Irs
This explanation may be the most frustrating of all for people wondering where the heck their stimulus checks are. But a mistake made by your bank, the IRS, or the tax-prep software you used to file returns could screw up your stimulus payment.
As the Washington Post reported, the stimulus payments for millions of taxpayers may be delayed because of a glitch with tax-prep software firms, such as TurboTax, H& R Block, and Jackson Hewitt. The IRS might not have direct deposit information for you if you used one of these services and received an advance on your tax refund, or if you paid for the service by deducting the fee from your tax refund. And if the IRS doesn’t have your direct deposit info, your stimulus check will be delayed. If you think this situation applies to you, use the IRS Get My Payment app to provide the agency with your direct deposit details.

Irs Get My Payment Tool
Most people don’t need to do anything to receive their stimulus checks, which pay out up to $1,200 per adult, and $500 per child under age 17. According to the IRS, 130 million stimulus payments were sent out through the program’s first four weeks, and somewhere between 150 million to 170 million payments will be distributed overall. The payment amounts are based on your adjusted gross income, as calculated in your most recent tax return, and the IRS is paying most checks via direct deposit provided that information is already on file.
Yet in this particularly trying economic climate, where millions have lost their jobs, many people were waiting for the IRS to offer a service letting them track their stimulus checks, similar to the tool allowing you to track your tax refund. Some taxpayers are also unsure how or when they will receive their $1,200 checks, or they seek to provide the IRS with updated direct deposit information so that they can get their checks as soon as possible. The Get My Payment application is supposed to address all of these needs.
What Does The Get My Payment Portal Do
Go to the “Get My Payment” portal if you want to:
- Check the status of your stimulus payment
- Confirm your payment type
- Get a projected direct deposit or paper check delivery date and
- Enter your bank account information for direct deposit if the IRS doesn’t have your direct deposit information and they haven’t sent your payment yet.
Note, however, that the portal cannot update bank account information after your stimulus check has been scheduled for delivery. To help protect against potential fraud, the tool also doesn’t allow people to change bank account information already on file with the IRS.

Reader Question Of The Week
If you have a retirement question, send it to . In the subject line, put Question of the Week.
The answers for this weeks reader questions come from Lynn Ballou and Erin Voisin, both certified financial planners and partners with California-based EP Wealth Advisors.
Q: In early January, we took 25 percent of the required minimum distribution , and again in early April. Since then, weve read that RMDs are optional this year and that we might be able to replace the amounts weve already taken. This would be good for us because we have other savings we could tap, and wed rather not have to sell stocks in a bear market. Whats not clear: What are the required steps to return this money, and can the money we took more than 60 days ago be returned?
Ballou: Check with your IRA custodian to determine how to return the funds. Be sure to replace the entire gross distribution. If taxes were withheld, youll want to apply those to your return when you file your 2020 taxes.
Voisin: The IRS did extend the 60-day rollover period to July 15. But it only applies to any RMDs taken as of Feb 1.
Q: I am 60 and my husband is 61. I plan to take Social Security at 70, and my husband plans to take it at 66. When he turns 63, we are going to withdraw 4 percent from our IRAs to supplement our income. With the pandemic happening, would it be smarter to have him start taking Social Security at 63 and let our IRAs have more time to grow as our accounts have lost money?
