How to track the status of your stimulus check

While you may have heard them referred to as stimulus checks, the Economic Impact Payments were for the most part direct deposited into bank accounts or sent out as bank cards. More than 472 million payments totaling $803 billion in financial relief went to households impacted by the pandemic. The Internal Revenue Service based the amounts that individuals received on income, tax filing status, and number of children .

How much was paid for each of the three rounds?

First round, from the CARES Act, March 2020

  • $1,200 per income tax filer, $500 per child

Second round, from the Consolidated Appropriations Act, December 2020

  • $600 per income tax filer, $600 per child

Third round, from the American Rescue Plan Act, March 2021

  • $1,400 per income tax filer, $1,400 per child

Some Americans Will Be Getting A Fourth Stimulus Check

Despite the fact a fourth check won’t happen for most Americans, some will get another payment in 2022. This can happen if:

  • They did not receive their full stimulus payments in 2021. Those who missed out on part or all of their payments could include people whose incomes dropped in 2021 and who became eligible for a stimulus check despite their 2020 income being too high to qualify. Anyone who added a dependent last year may also be owed payments due for that dependent. To get this money, it will be necessary to file a 2021 tax return.
  • Their state provides another stimulus check. Some states are using money provided by the federal government for COVID-19 relief to provide payments this year.

Outside of these situations, Americans shouldn’t expect more help from Washington in the form of a fourth stimulus check in 2022 unless the pandemic takes a devastating turn.

Whats Next For Child Tax Credit Payments

78k families in my district received the Child Tax Credit. Thats $207.9 Million invested in lifting children out of poverty. We cant pull this rug out from under our families. We must extend the Child Tax Credit!

Teresa Leger Fernandez

One interesting historical footnote about Manchins opposition to extending the child tax credit this year, though, has to do with the overly generous nature of it .

Republicans are actually responsible for that. They made the child tax credit much more generous as part of the big Trump 2017 tax bill. Up to that point, eligibility for the credit started phasing out for individuals making more than $75,000 and parents making more than $110,000.

Republicans bumped those limits up to $200,000 and $400,000, respectively. Be that as it may, though: Unless the political dynamic changes and either Manchin changes his mind or Democrats peel off at least one Republican Senator there will be no new child tax credit checks for the foreseeable future.

What If My Stimulus Check Is Wrong

If you received a stimulus check for the wrong amount, here are three tips to keep in mind:

  • Be wary of scams. There are COVID-19-related scams going around where you receive a stimulus check for more than you need, then the scammer asks you to wire any money you owe back to them.
  • Wait to hear from the IRS. The IRS will send you a letter in the mail 15 days after your receive your check confirming how much money was sent and how to alert them if you received the wrong amount.
  • Dont touch the extra funds. The IRS will check to see if theyve made a mistake, so you may have to pay it back at some point or when you file taxes next year. Until then, consider putting the extra funds in a savings account, so you can at least earn some interest while you wait. You wouldnt want to lock it away in a CD, since you wont know when youll need to pay it back.

Here Are Some Key Things To Know About This Tool And Who Can Use It

  • Before using the tool, people must verify their identity by answering security questions.
  • If the answers do not match IRS records after multiple attempts, the user will be locked out of the tool for 24 hours. This is for security reasons. Those who can’t verify their identity won’t be able to use Get My Payment. If this happens, people should not contact the IRS.
  • If the tool returns a message of “payment status not available,” this may mean the IRS can’t determine the person’s eligibility for a payment right now. There are several reasons this could happen. Two common reasons are:
  • A 2018 or 2019 tax return is not on file and the agency needs more information or,
  • The individual could be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return.
  • In some cases, if a taxpayer has filed their 2019 tax return but the IRS hasn’t processed it yet, they may receive “payment status not available.” Taxpayers who’ve already filed a tax return don’t need to take any action. The IRS continues to issue Economic Impact Payments as tax returns are processed.
  • People who aren’t required to file a tax return and used the Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here tool to register for a payment can check the status of their payment using the Get My Payment tool. These individuals should wait two weeks after submitting their information. If they’re required to file a 2019 tax return and they used the Non-Filer tool, this may delay processing their tax return and their Economic Impact Payment.
  • Checking For Your Stimulus Payment: What You Can Expect

The IRSâs Get My Payment application is the only official way to find out when youâre scheduled to receive your stimulus payment. In fact, the IRS has asked people not to call about stimulus payments.

The app will ask you to enter your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, your date of birth, your street address and your ZIP code.

If youâre eligible for a payment, it should show your payment has already been made or that itâs scheduled to be made. You also should see how and where it will be delivered.

If you have account information on file with the IRS, you should get your payment by direct deposit. If you donât receive a direct deposit, you can watch your mail for either a paper check or a prepaid debit card.

If your third stimulus payment arrives in the mail, it might come in a different form than your first two. Like the first and second payments, it should be followed by an IRS notice or letter that includes the amount of the payment. The IRS says you should keep this for your tax records.

    Advance Child Tax Credit

Even if you dont pay any taxes, you may qualify for a refund of the CTC.

The CTC was expanded under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 for tax year 2021 only. If you are eligible, you should have begun receiving advance Child Tax Credit payments on July 15. The payments will continue monthly through December 2021. Under ARPA, families are eligible to receive:

    • Up to $3,000 per qualifying child between ages 6 and 17
    • Up to $3,600 per qualifying child under age 6

The Internal Revenue Service began sending out letters in early June to more than 36 million families who may be eligible for the monthly payments. Most families do not need to do anything to get their payments, as long as theyve filed their 2020 or 2019 tax return. Learn more about the letter and how it can help you determine your eligibility.

The Irs Tool Might Say Your Payment Was Sent To You

How can I check on the status of my stimulus check?

If the IRS’ online tool says the agency has issued your stimulus money, but you have no record of it in your bank account and it never arrived in your mailbox, you may need to take one of these steps, including possibly filing a stimulus check payment trace. You’ll need to have the letter the IRS sent you.

Can You Use The Portal If You Didn’t File A Tax Return

You couldn’t use the “Get My Payment” tool to track the status of your first stimulus check if you didn’t file a 2018 or 2019 federal income tax return. However, there was another online tool that non-filers could use to give the IRS with the information it needed to process a payment.

The non-filers tool wasn’t used for second stimulus checks, though. Instead, if you didn’t file a 2019 tax return, and you didn’t use the non-filers tool to get your first-round payment, then you have to wait to claim your second stimulus check money as a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2020 return.

The IRS is not using the non-filers tool for third-round stimulus checks, either. As a result, if you don’t file a 2019 or 2020 tax return, you’ll have to claim any money you’re owed as a Recovery Rebate credit on your 2021 return, which you won’t file until next year. However, you can avoid having to wait until next year by filing a 2020 return before the May 17, 2021, deadline.

    Making Sure Youre Applicable

The site will then remind you the tool will only work if you filed a tax return for 2019 or 2018. If so, click Get My Payment.

Those who were exempt from filing a return will need to use a separate IRS-created tool dedicated to non-filers, which involves a longer process. Youll need to set up an account, and supply a valid Social Security number and birth date so the IRS can confirm your identity.

How To Check If You’re Still Owed Stimulus Money

The IRS issued the third stimulus payment — which was worth a maximum of $1,400 per qualifying adult and dependent — to more than 160 million people in early 2021. And, while most people received the full stimulus payment they qualified for, not everyone did.

If you think you’re still owed the money from the third stimulus payment, the good news is that you can still take steps to receive the money. You’ll just need to claim it as a Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2021 taxes this year. After your tax return is processed, the missing stimulus money will be issued along with the money sent to you as part of your refund.

But before you claim the third stimulus payment on your taxes, you may want to check to see if you’re entitled to the money. Doing so is simple: All you have to do is check to see if you’ve received Letter 6475 from the IRS.

These letters, which have already been issued by the IRS, were sent out to help you determine whether you can claim the money for the third stimulus on your taxes. In addition to helping you determine whether you can qualify for the Recovery Rebate Credit, this letter also includes instructions on how to claim the money on your taxes.
