Don’t be alarmed if the Get My Payment tool gives you a message that says “Payment Status Not Available.” You may see this message until your payment is processed, according to the IRS. So you may not have to do anything.
But it could also mean you’re not eligible for a payment. So you may want to double-check your eligibility and plug your numbers in our stimulus check calculator to see whether you’re due money.
Making Sure You’re Applicable
The site will then remind you the tool will only work if you filed a tax return for 2019 or 2018. If so, click Get My Payment.
Those who were exempt from filing a return will need to use a separate IRS-created tool dedicated to “non-filers,” which involves a longer process. You’ll need to set up an account, and supply a valid Social Security number and birth date so the IRS can confirm your identity.
The Irs Doesn’t Have Your Direct Deposit Info
The fastest way to get your stimulus check is via bank direct deposit from the IRS. If the IRS doesn’t have your direct deposit info on file, you can still get paid, but it’ll come via paper check â and getting a check in the mail could delay your payment by weeks or even months. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin told CNN that it was his idea that paper check stimulus payments have President Donald Trump’s signature on them, and that reports saying that the signature would add further delay to the arrival of paper checks is incorrect.
“The checks have not gone out yet,” Mnuchin said to CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday, April 19, “and the reason they have not gone out yet is that we’re hoping that more people, as I said, will go to IRS.gov. It’s much safer to send out direct deposits.”
Most taxpayers provide the IRS with their bank account details, for the purposes of making a payment or receiving a tax refund. If the agency does not have your direct deposit details, you can provide the IRS with that information at the Get My Payment appâ which also lets you track the status of your check. However, the last day to give your direct deposit info to the IRS was May 13 if you missed the deadline, are eligible, and haven’t received your payment already, it will come as a paper check. You can still use the Get My Payment app to reveal how you will receive your payment , and give a scheduled arrival date, if the payment has been processed.

Didn’t Get The First And Second Payments Claim The 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit
If you didn’t get the full amount of the first or second payment you were eligible for, you may be eligible to claim the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit and must file a 2020 tax return even if you aren’t required to file. The third payment will not be used to calculate the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit.

On March 27, 2020, Congress passed the CARES Act to help individuals that are negatively impacted by the coronavirus epidemic. Economic Impact Payments, an important component of individual relief, are being distributed by the Internal Revenue Service . Millions of Americans have already received their Economic Impact Payments. Deadline For Stimulus Payments
The IRS has issued all first and second Economic Impact Payments and will stop issuing third payments by December 31, 2021, as required by law, according to the agency’s website.
To find out if you are owed a third payment, the IRS recommends creating or viewing your online account.
You can also refer to IRS Notice 1444-C, which was mailed after the third round of payments was sent out.
The IRS will send Letter 6475 in early 2022 to confirm the total amount of the third Economic Impact Payment and any plus-up payments received for tax year 2021.
As part of the American Rescue Plan, families who welcomed a newborn or adopted a new underage dependent in 2021 can get a $1,400 payment in 2022.
What Will The Status Report Look Like
For third-round stimulus checks, the “Get My Payment” tool will display one of the following:
1. Payment Status. If you get this message, a payment has been issued. The status page will show a payment date, payment method , and account information if paid by direct deposit. Note that “mail” means either a paper check or a debit card. If you don’t recognize the bank account number displayed in the tool, it doesn’t necessarily mean your deposit was made to the wrong account or that there’s a fraud. If you don’t recognize the account number, it may be an issue related to how information is displayed in the tool tied to temporary accounts used for refund loans/banking products.
2. Need More Information. This message is displayed if your 2020 return was processed but the IRS doesn’t have bank account information for you and your payment has not been issued yet. It could also mean your payment was returned to the IRS by the Post Office as undeliverable. As mentioned above, if your payment is returned, you’ll have the opportunity to provide the IRS your bank account or debit card information so they can issue a direct deposit payment . If you don’t provide any account information, the IRS can’t reissue your payment until they receive an updated address.
The portal is updated no more than once daily, typically overnight. As a result, there’s no reason to check the portal more than once per day.

Am I Eligible For The Third Stimulus Check
- According to the IRS, the third stimulus check is not restricted to those under 17 with members dependent on them.
- Older relatives, college students, disabled adults, parents, and grandparents all qualify for a payment.
- The Rescue Plan is to provide a $1,400 check for every adult, child, and other dependent family members. .
- For a single filer, if your income is above $75,000, the amount paid will decline. And if it crosses $80,000, you will not receive any payment.
- In the case of married couples, if their income is more than $150,000, the payment amount will decline. And they will not receive any payment if it is more than $160,000.
- An eligible family of four will be receiving a check of $5,600.
- Also, apart from the $1,400 stimulus payments to the Americans, there is more support that will be provided. A $600 payment is sent as a part of the December 2020 relief plan. This brings the total to about $2,000.

What If You Didnt Receive Your First Stimulus Check
If you are an eligible individual and you did not receive a stimulus check earlier this year, you will be able to claim it when you file your 2020 taxes in 2021. This is also true if you do not receive your second stimulus check.
If you didnt receive a check, the IRS urges you to review the eligibility criteria when you file your 2020 taxes many people, including recent college graduates, may be eligible to claim it. Can I Track My Stimulus Check
Yes. Just like the IRS typically allows you to track your tax refund, you can now know where your stimulus payment is.
On April 15, the IRS launched the Get My Payment application. With Get My Payment, people are able to check their payment status, confirm whether they’re getting it via direct deposit or check, and enter their bank account information. In order to track the payment, you’ll need to input your Social Security number, date of birth, street address and zip code.
If the Get May Payment app returns a message about how your payment status is not available, it may not have your information uploaded, the IRS may not have processed your 2019 tax return, or you may not be eligible for a stimulus check.

Theres A Silver Lining Though

Who Is Eligible For A Payment
Eligible individuals will receive checks of up to $600 for individuals and up to $600 for each qualifying child. The amount of the checks would start to phaseout for those earning more than $75,000 .
As before, dependents who are 17 and older are not eligible for the child payment. This is important to understand because there had been some discussions about changing the eligibility for dependents: that did not happen.

One interesting historical footnote about Manchins opposition to extending the child tax credit this year, though, has to do with the overly generous nature of it .
Republicans are actually responsible for that. They made the child tax credit much more generous as part of the big Trump 2017 tax bill. Up to that point, eligibility for the credit started phasing out for individuals making more than $75,000 and parents making more than $110,000.
Republicans bumped those limits up to $200,000 and $400,000, respectively. Be that as it may, though: Unless the political dynamic changes and either Manchin changes his mind or Democrats peel off at least one Republican Senator there will be no new child tax credit checks for the foreseeable future.

Check The Status Of Your Third Economic Impact Payment
All Third Economic Impact Payments must be issued by Dec. 31, 2021 in accordance with the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, signed into law on March 11, 2021.
The IRS mailed Notice 1444-C to people who received a third Economic Impact Payment. You should keep this letter with your tax year 2021 records.

If you can’t find the letter or you threw it out already, you can check out your federal tax account with the IRS website. If you don’t have an account yet, go to the IRS account page and tap the blue button that says Create or view your account.
It takes about 15 minutes to set a new account up and the IRS says you need a few pieces of information on hand:
- Email address.
- Social Security Number or Individual Tax Identification Number.
- Tax filing status.
- Mailing address.
- One financial account number linked to your name. This can be your credit card , your student loan account number, your mortgage or home equity loan, your home equity line of credit, or an auto loan.
Payment Status Not Available: What Should You Do
The IRS Get My Payment tool will only let you input new direct deposit or bank account information if youre seeing a Need More Information status, breaking with tradition from previous stimulus check rounds. That works either by submitting a financial product that includes a routing and account number with it, whether it be a bank account or prepaid debit card.
The easiest way to make sure that the IRS has the most accurate picture of your financial situation and personal whereabouts is by submitting your 2020 tax return. You now have until May 17 to submit your 2020 tax return, after the IRS on March 17 announced it was delaying the deadline by a month.
However, given the unprecedented and unconventional nature of the current tax season, the Treasury Department and IRS may have already attempted to send out your payment before your tax information was processed.
You could also update your mailing address by submitting a Form 8822, Change of Address, or notifying the IRS orally of your move. But be prepared: You might experience delays waiting for confirmation, given that the IRS has already begun distributing these stimulus checks. As always, a direct deposit is the fastest way to guarantee you receive a payment.

What Does The Stimulus Check Portal Do
The updated “Get My Payment” tool lets you:
- Check the status of your stimulus payment
- Confirm your payment type and
- Get a projected direct deposit or paper check delivery date .
For first-round stimulus payments, you could also use the portal to enter or change your bank account information to have your payment directly deposited into your account. However, that feature isn’t included in the current tool . The IRS already has bank account information for millions of Americans from recent tax returns, tax payments, the original “Get My Payment” tool, the non-filers tool used last year, other federal agencies that regularly send out benefit payments , and federal records of recent payments to or from the government. So, the tax agency is generally limiting direct deposit payments to bank accounts that they already have on file. As a result, you can’t change your bank information using the “Get My Payment” tool.
If your payment isn’t deposited directly into your bank account, then you’ll get either a paper check or a debit card in the mail . You could also receive a payment by mail if your bank rejected a direct deposit. This could happen because the bank information was incorrect or the bank account on file with the IRS has since been closed.
Amount And Status Of Your Payment
To find the amount of the third payment, create or view your online account or refer to IRS Notice 1444-C, which we mailed after sending the payment.
If you are sent a plus-up Economic Impact Payment after your 2020 tax return is processed:
- The amount of your initial third payment will no longer show in your online account. You will only see the amount of your plus-up payment.
- The status of your initial third payment will no longer show in Get My Payment. You will only see the status of your plus-up payment.
