Q How Much Will My Third Stimulus Check Be For
A. Your third stimulus check depends on your 2020 or 2019 income .
Qualifying group | |
An AGI of $150,500 or less | An AGI $160,000 or more |
Dependents of all ages: $1,400 | $1,400 apiece, no cap — but only if caretakers make under the above limits |
* This framework by the IRS was designed for taxpayers who are living and working in the U.S., so expats should ensure theyre looking at their AGI and not their gross income when determining their eligibility, especially if theyre claiming the foreign earned income exclusion. |
Additional Payments: If your third stimulus payment is based on their 2019 return and your 2020 return makes you eligible for a larger payment, the IRS will redetermine your eligibility and issue a supplementary payment later this summer.
You can estimate your own payment amount with H& R Blocks Stimulus Check Calculator.

Can I Use The Calculator If I Havent Filed A Tax Return For 2020
Yes, you can use your 2019 tax return. The IRS emphasizes that if you use your 2020 return to estimate your payment, dont guess your AGI: File an accurate return first. Adjusted gross income, as the name implies, is your gross income minus certain adjustments such as educator expenses, student loan interest, alimony payments and qualifying contributions to retirement accounts. You can find AGI on line 11 of your 2020 federal 1040 income tax return or line 8b of your 2019 return.
If you werent able to claim your earlier $1,200 or $600 stimulus checks, you can do so on your 2020 tax returns. Use the Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet and enter the amount from the worksheet onto Line 30 of your 1040.
What Dependents Qualify For The Third Stimulus Check
The American Rescue Plan expands the definition of a dependent to anyone who meets the IRS definition of a dependent on your taxes. So this means if you filed your taxes and claimed a dependentwhether a child or an adultand met the income limits for a payment, your dependent will also qualify for a payment.
Child dependents must be:
- Under 19, or under 24 if that child is a student,
- Or considered permanently and totally disabled
And must:
- Have a valid social security number or an adoption taxpayer identification number included on your tax return,
- And not be claimed as a dependent by anyone else in the qualifying tax year
In cases of split households, the parent or guardian who claimed the child in the tax return on file when the IRS processes your stimulus check will receive the stimulus payment for that child.
- Make less than the gross income requirement, which is $4,300 for 2020, excluding Social Security benefits and tax-exempt income such as services performed by individuals with disabilities at a sheltered workshop
- Receive at least half their total support from you
- Have their SSN included on your tax return
- Not be claimed by anyone else other than you in the qualifying tax year
Note: If you have a baby or adopt a child after you receive your stimulus check, you will be able to claim them as a dependent on your 2021 taxes for the $1,400 tax credit.

Who Qualifies For A Payment
Taxpayers must have a Social Security number to be eligible for a payment and meet the income requirements detailed above.
While the steeper income phase out reduces the number of taxpayers qualifying for this stimulus payment, all dependents of eligible taxpayers will also receive a payment for the first time. That includes millions of college students, disabled adults and elderly Americans. Mixed-status families in which some members have Social Security numbers and some do not are also eligible, as they were for the second payment.
Like the second stimulus payment, those who owe child support should not have any of their stimulus money withheld.
Which Of My Dependents Qualify For The Third Stimulus Check

For the third stimulus check, all your dependents qualify, regardless of age. This means that for each child or adult dependent you have, you can claim an additional $1,400.
This is different from the first and second stimulus checks, which only allowed child dependents to get the additional payment.

Q. Im a single person that has a valid SSN, but I do not file a tax return because I do not have any taxable income. What should I do if I didnt receive any stimulus money?
A. For the first two rounds of economic impact payments, the taxpayer will need to file a 2020 tax return with the IRS and claim the recovery rebate credit. Eligible taxpayers who did not receive the maximum amount of advance payments and taxpayers who missed receiving the first or second stimulus payments altogether can claim a credit on their tax return for the amount they qualified for but did not receive as an advance payment. For example, a single taxpayer who was eligible for but did not receive either economic impact payment would be eligible to claim a recovery rebate credit in the amount of $1,800 .
If this same eligible taxpayer did not receive the third economic impact payment, they should receive that from the IRS after their 2020 tax return is processed. Once the IRS processes the taxpayers 2020 tax return, the IRS will use the information from the 2020 tax return to determine eligibility for the third round of payments. In this case, if the IRS determines the taxpayer is eligible for the full third economic impact payment and no payment has been made to that taxpayer, the IRS will issue an additional $1,400 to that individual. The FAQs available on this IRS webpage help explain the process someone should follow in this situation to complete their tax return.
You May Not Receive A Check This Round Even If You Got One Before
The income limits for this new round of stimulus checks have changed. So even if you previously received a stimulus check, you may not qualify for this one.
The adjusted gross income maximum income for the American Rescue Plan Act are:
- Individuals earning $80,000
- Head of households earning $120,000
If your AGI exceeds these amounts, your household will not qualify for the stimulus payment.
Additionally, the phase-out for stimulus reductions is more complicated to calculate this time around. Since the maximum income threshold is fixed, your total stimulus check will be reduced proportionately by the amount earned over $75,000 for individuals, $112,500 for heads of households, or $150,000 for joint filers until it hits the phase-out limits above.

Who Was Eligible For A Third Stimulus Check
Under the terms, individuals could receive up to $1,400 through the third stimulus checks. Couples who file jointly could get up to $2,800. Additionally, eligible dependents could also receive $1,400.
To qualify, you had to be either a U.S. citizen or resident alien in 2021. You also had to have a valid Social Security number, though there are certain exceptions for spouses or dependents.
You also could not have been claimed as someone else’s dependent on a 2020 tax return in order to qualify for your own payment.
To be eligible for a full payment, your adjusted gross income could not be above certain thresholds: $75,000 for individuals, $112,500 for heads of household or $150,000 for married couples.
Payments were phased out for those with incomes above those levels, and cut off completely for individuals with $80,000 in adjusted gross income, heads of household with $120,000 and married couples with $160,000.
Will I Get An Eip Card
For the first and second stimulus checks, the Treasury Department sent millions of taxpayers an economic impact payment debit card. For the first stimulus check, EIP cards were sent to individuals who had not received a tax return by direct deposit in the past and who had their tax returns processed by certain IRS service centers. For the second stimulus check, the Treasury Department sent EIP cards to a majority of taxpayers.
If you received an EIP card for the second stimulus payment, you will probably receive a new EIP card for the third stimulus payment. If you receive an EIP card, read the material that comes with it carefully they come with fees for checking your balance, using a teller for withdrawals, or using an out-of-network ATM.

Will You Get A Stimulus Check ‘plus
As the IRS explained in a news release on Thursday, these plus-up payments provide “supplemental” support for Americans whose third stimulus check had been based on information from their 2019 income tax returns, but who are now in line for a new or larger amount based on their 2020 returns.
When it started processing the latest relief payments, the IRS had to rely on the most recent data in its system. If you hadnt filed your 2020 taxes before the third round of stimulus checks was set in motion, the IRS would have used your 2019 return to determine how much money you were eligible for.
But maybe you earned less last year than you did in 2019, because of the COVID crisis. If you’ve recently filed your 2020 taxes, you may be eligible for a bigger stimulus check now so you’ll receive a plus-up to make up the difference.
Individual taxpayers whose returns show adjusted gross income up to $75,000 qualify for the full $1,400 stimulus check. The same goes for couples who file jointly and have AGI of as much as $150,000.

Stimulus Check For Sick Workers
As the pandemic is a healthcare crisis, a sickness benefit is mandatory. According to the World Health Organization, a person who tested COVID-19 positive should self-isolate for 14 days to ensure they do not spread the virus.
And if you are feeling sick, even then WHO recommends you to self-isolate so you cant infect others until the COVID-19 test result is out. The second wave of the pandemic in December aggravated the problem. There is a mutant virus scare, and you can get infected even if you have recovered from COVID-19 and developed antibodies.
Warren Buffetts rule applies here too, be fearful when others are careless. Hence, the CRA is giving $900 for 14 days in Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit for up to four weeks. You will get this benefit if you are sick or under quarantine and do not have sickness benefits from your employer.
How Your 2021 Adjusted Gross Income Could Lead To A Bigger Stimulus Check Next Year
Since the third stimulus checks are a 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, if your income is lower in 2021 than in 2020 or 2019 making you eligible for a stimulus payment or a bigger stimulus payment you can claim the correct payment when you file your 2021 taxes next year. This also applies for other changes in circumstances, like if you had a child. It’s unclear exactly when or how people would receive these payments. The IRS hasnt responded to Moneys request for comment on how the agency will handle these additional payments, or if the agency will look at amended 2020 returns at the “additional payment determination date.
Even if you can’t lower your way to a third stimulus check, reducing your AGI still generally results in a smaller tax bill. And you’ve set away funds for the future. Unless the tax deadline gets pushed back, you have until April 15.

Can I Claim A Stimulus Check For Someone Who Is Deceased
Yes. For the third stimulus check, people who have died on or after January 1, 2021, are eligible to receive the third stimulus check. However, for married military couples, the date of eligibility is expanded. If the person who died was a member of the military and died before January 1, 2021, the surviving spouse can still receive the third stimulus check, even if they dont have an SSN.
For the first and second stimulus check, the IRS has stated that people who died on or after January 1, 2020, are eligible to receive both payments.
If they didnt receive the stimulus payments or didnt receive the full amounts that they are eligible for, spouses or other family members can file a 2020 federal tax return and claim it as part of their tax refund or use GetCTC.org if they dont have a filing requirement. The deadline to use GetCTC.org is November 15, 2021.
