Stimulus Checks: No Taxable Income Or Address

What you need to know about the 3rd stimulus check

Q. Im a single person that has a valid SSN, but I do not file a tax return because I do not have any taxable income. What should I do if I didnt receive any stimulus money?

A. For the first two rounds of economic impact payments, the taxpayer will need to file a 2020 tax return with the IRS and claim the recovery rebate credit. Eligible taxpayers who did not receive the maximum amount of advance payments and taxpayers who missed receiving the first or second stimulus payments altogether can claim a credit on their tax return for the amount they qualified for but did not receive as an advance payment. For example, a single taxpayer who was eligible for but did not receive either economic impact payment would be eligible to claim a recovery rebate credit in the amount of $1,800 .

If this same eligible taxpayer did not receive the third economic impact payment, they should receive that from the IRS after their 2020 tax return is processed. Once the IRS processes the taxpayers 2020 tax return, the IRS will use the information from the 2020 tax return to determine eligibility for the third round of payments. In this case, if the IRS determines the taxpayer is eligible for the full third economic impact payment and no payment has been made to that taxpayer, the IRS will issue an additional $1,400 to that individual. The FAQs available on this IRS webpage help explain the process someone should follow in this situation to complete their tax return.

How Is The Third Stimulus Check Calculated

The stimulus plan mandates the treasury to rely on 2019 and 2020 tax returns to calculate how much you could get for the third round of stimulus checks.

Congress approved limits based on adjusted gross income ranges. This means that taxpayers making less than the minimum threshold could get the full stimulus check, while those earning above it get reduced payments until they are fully phased out at higher incomes.

You can find your AGI on IRS form 1040. This is calculated by subtracting deductions like student loan interest, health savings account payments, and contributions to a traditional IRA from your gross income.

By contrast, your gross income is the total amount of money that you made during the tax year, including wages, dividends, capital gains, rental property income and other types of revenue.

Your 2019 taxes had to be filed by July 15, 2020. And your 2020 taxes are due by the extended deadline of May 17. You can read more about when to file your tax returns for the third stimulus check, and other IRS requirements in two tax sections below.

People Without A Social Security Number

Generally, you must have a Social Security number to get a stimulus check. To get the extra $1,400 for a dependent, the dependent must also have a Social Security number. If they don’t, then you probably won’t get the addition amount.

There are, however, a few exceptions to this rule. First, an adopted child can have an adoption taxpayer identification number instead of a Social Security number. Second, for married members of the U.S. armed forces, only one spouse needs to have a Social Security number. And, third, if your spouse doesn’t have a Social Security number, you can still receive a third stimulus check, including any extra money for dependents, if you have a Social Security number.

The third stimulus check makes older adult dependents eligible to receive more money on behalf of the household. Here’s how to determine if you qualify for your own stimulus check or count as a dependent.

How Do I Know If I’m Eligible For A Third Stimulus Payment

For the first and second stimulus checks, whether you were eligible for any stimulus money depended on whether you were considered a dependent and the amount of your AGI from your federal tax filing. Your AGI is your gross income minus any eligible adjustments that you may qualify for. Since the tax deadline has been extended to May 17, the IRS is likely to use your 2019 tax return, if you file taxes.

If you have a pension or investments that are taxable, those will affect your AGI, and therefore your eligibility for a stimulus check. The same is true for interest from a bank account. Interest from tax-exempt bonds isn’t included in your AGI, however, so it wouldn’t affect your stimulus payment eligibility.

For the third stimulus check, some of the eligibility rules changed in the final version of the bill — read on for more, and use our third stimulus check calculator to see if you qualify based on income limits. Here are stimulus calculators for the first and second checks, respectively.

What You Should Do If Your Income Increased In 2020 Vs 2019

Undoubtedly, a whole separate camp of Americans saw their incomes rise in 2020 versus 2019, meaning they would no longer be considered eligible for a stimulus check if they were to submit their return today.

You could still wait to file your tax return and claim a stimulus check. The IRS wouldnt attempt to recoup that payment, and it also shouldnt open you up to any penalties or fines, according to the current text of the bill. Economic Impact Payments also arent considered taxable income.

But beware: You dont want to risk incurring late fees by waiting so long that you submit your tax return past the April 15 deadline .

The IRS will use the AGI on your most recent processed tax return on file. While 55.7 million Americans have already filed their taxes for 2020, millions still havent filedand the IRS is also significantly behind on processing tax returns.

The IRS will use your 2020 tax return if it has been processed by the date they submit your check. If your 2020 return is not available yet, they will use the information from your 2019 tax return.

Note: On March 17, the IRS announced an extension to file your 2020 taxes. Tax returns will now be due by May 17. But if you expect that you may receive more in stimulus money based on your 2020 taxes, and you have not yet received confirmation of your stimulus payment status , you should file as soon as possible.

If you are not required to file your taxes and successfully used the IRSs non-filers tool or completed a special simplified tax return in 2020, no action is needed on your part to receive your payment.

If you do not qualify based on your 2019 income, but you will qualify based upon your 2020 income, consider filing your taxes as soon as possible. Depending on your timing, your stimulus eligibility may be determined before your 2020 tax return is processed. However, the law includes a provision to make supplemental payments in September to ensure people who qualify do not need to wait until the 2021 tax season.

I’m Not A Us Citizen But I Pay Taxes Can I Get A Third Stimulus Check

Under the , non-US citizens, including those who pay taxes, weren’t eligible to receive the $600 payment, unlike with the first round of checks. Under the CARES Act of March 2020, all US citizens and non-US citizens with a Social Security number who live and work in America were eligible to receive stimulus payments. That included people the IRS refers to as “resident aliens,” green card holders and workers using visas such as H-1B and H-2A.

If your citizenship status has changed since you first got a Social Security number, you may have to update the IRS’ records to get your check. US citizens living abroad were also eligible for a first payment.

For the third payment, the new law includes checks for “mixed-status” citizenship families — families with members with different immigration statuses — who were left out of the first two checks.

A nonfiler is a person who isn’t required to pay taxes to the IRS during tax season. The requirement to file a tax return depends on your gross income, which is all income you receive in the form of money, goods, property and services that aren’t tax-exempt .

People who are considered nonfilers don’t need to do anything to receive a third stimulus check, according to the IRS. However, if you’re claiming missing stimulus money in a Recovery Rebate Credit, even nonfilers will have to file a tax return this year. You may be able to use a special form and file for free. You will, however, need some specific information.

If you’re age 65 or older, you should file taxes under the following circumstances:

  • Single filer with at least $13,850 in gross income.
  • Head of household with at least $20,000 in gross income.
  • Qualifying widow age 65 or older with at least $25,700 in gross income.

In the 2019 tax year, the IRS introduced Form 1040-SR, US Tax Return for Seniors. This form is basically the same as Form 1040, but has larger text and some helpful information for older taxpayers.

If you are amongst the people that have filed their last tax return but were unable to receive the prior stimulus checks as the IRS did not have your information, you will likely be one of those people receiving a stimulus check this week. As such, the third stimulus check will go to eligible taxpayers with less than 75,000 dollars earned per year.

The IRS noted in a statement that people will begin to receive these stimulus checks from June 21, and the only people that will receive this financial boost are those that have not received the 1,400 dollar plus-up payment.

It may be different, however, for individuals with “high” income levels from investments or other sources.

The total amount of this third check also depends on how many dependents you’re claiming this year , or if you’re claimed as a dependent on someone else’s taxes. Tax season may also be a deciding factor this time if you filed a tax return in early 2021 and it’s already been processed by the IRS.

The IRS will use the information they have on file from 2019 or 2020, whichever is the most recent when they get the order to send out the payments. However, there are individuals that will file for the first time in 2020 and those who havent filed in prior years. In the fall, the IRS was trying to locate some 9 million non-filers who were due a stimulus check but hadnt received one yet due to a lack of information. They continue to do this.
