Check : The $1400 Third Stimulus Payment

The stimulus bill has passed in the House, where does it go next? | USA TODAY

The $1,400 stimulus check has already gone out to tens of millions of Americans, with more batches of payments going out over the coming weeks — you can track the status of your payment. Under new eligibility rules, some folks who qualified for the first two payments may not make the cut for the third. A hard ceiling on income, designed to exclude higher earners from getting a check, comes with a rule change regarding the use of dependents in the stimulus check formula. Check out our stimulus payment calculator to see how the income cap affects you.

The new legislation gives the IRS a deadline of Dec. 31 to finish sending the stimulus checks.

Move To Double Minimum Wage Rejected

The chamber set a record in its longest single vote in the modern era 11 hours and 50 minutes as Democrats negotiated a compromise on unemployment benefits.

The extended unemployment payments, which are to be paid out on top of state jobless benefits, proved to be the most contentious part of the bill.

The House bill had set the supplemental benefit at $520 a week, but Senate Democrats finally agreed to knock that down to $390.

The House bill also featured a measure to more than double the minimum wage to $US15 per hour, which the Senate also rejected.

Moderate Democrats feared that the higher jobless benefits and minimum wage hike would overheat the economy and hurt businesses in rural states.

Senate Democrats used a process called reconciliation to pass the measure with a simple majority rather than the 60 of 100 votes normally required under the chamber’s rules.

It was unclear whether Democrats will try to use that manoeuvre on other policy goals such as legislation dealing with climate change and immigration.

One Republican, Daniel Sullivan of Alaska, left Washington on Friday night for a family funeral, meaning that Democrats did not need Vice-President Kamala Harris’ tie-breaking vote in the normally 5050 chamber.

Republicans have broadly supported previous stimulus packages to fight the virus and revive the economy.

Payments Based On 2019 Or 2020 Tax Return

The amount of your third stimulus check will be based on either your 2019 or 2020 return. If your 2020 tax return isn’t filed and processed by the time the IRS is ready to send your third stimulus payment, the tax agency will use information from your 2019 tax return. If your 2020 tax return is already filed and processed when the IRS starts to process your payment, then your stimulus check will be based on information found on that return. If your 2020 return is filed and/or processed after the IRS sends you a stimulus check, but before July 15, 2021 , a second payment will be sent to you for the difference between what your payment should have been if based on your 2020 return and the payment actually sent based on your 2019 return.

If you haven’t already filed your 2020 tax return, this will create some opportunities to “game” the system and increase the amount of your third stimulus check. For instance, if you’ll get a larger check based on your 2020 tax return, than you might want to quickly file your 2020 return electronically and have your third stimulus check based on that return. If you’ll get a bigger check if it’s based on your 2019 return, then just wait until after your payment is sent to file your 2020 return. When Will The Third Stimulus Check Be Sent

Democrats and Biden want to have the COVID-19 relief plan approved by this Sunday, March 14. That’s when extra unemployment assistance and other pandemic aid expires. Presuming the bill is passed Wednesday and signed right away, then it will get done four days ahead of that mark.

During the first round of stimulus checks in April 2020, it took about two weeks for the federal government to start distributing the money. It took around one week for the second round of checks, worth $600, in early January, since the infrastructure was already in place from the first round. If the IRS is able to keep with previous timelines, Americans could start receiving stimulus checks from late March to early April. For example, if the stimulus package is signed into law on Wednesday, based on previous relief plans, the first direct deposits may go out mid-to-late next week. One possible complicating factor is that this round of stimulus checks will be going out while the IRS is dealing with incoming tax returns. But it’s unclear how big of an impact that could make on stimulus checks going out.

The House Democratic Campaign Arm Lifts A Rule That Targeted Progressive Challenges

OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED BY THE PRESIDENT: THE SECOND STIMULUS ...

The House Democratic campaign arm on Tuesday reversed a policy preventing consultants who have aided primary challenges against Democratic incumbents from receiving party money in the future, in a victory for the partys insurgent progressive wing.

Representative Sean Patrick Maloney of New York, who took over this year as chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, had previously said that he intended to overturn the policy, which was put in place after the 2018 campaign season that saw the successful challenges of Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortezs and Ayanna Pressleys to longtime Democratic incumbents.

Chris Taylor, a spokesman for Mr. Maloney, said in a statement on Tuesday that the committee was opening its doors to a diverse array of consultants. This policy change means that the only criteria for a vendor to be listed in the directory are our standards for fair business practices related to use of organized labor, critical diversity and inclusion standards and other minimum qualifications, he said.

Waleed Shahid a spokesman for Justice Democrats, an insurgent group that grew out of Senator Bernie Sanderss 2016 presidential campaign and supported Ms. Ocasio-Cortez and Ms. Pressley in 2018 celebrated the move. Mr. Shahid said that the ban on challenger consultants had served to keep out progressive consultants.

Mr. Obamas official portrait has not yet been revealed.

Who Is Calling For More Stimulus Checks

There are currently 80 congressional Democrats that formally support additional financial help to struggling US households. Along with the 21 Senators, members of the House have been calling for recurring stimulus checks to keep households afloat. The most recent call came from the powerful the House Ways and Means Committee, with seven of the 42 members urging the White House to support such a measure.

“The pandemic has served as a stark reminder that families and workers need certainty in a crisis,” the committees letter read. “They deserve to know they can put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads.”

No Minimum Wage Increase

The bill does not include an increase in the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour last set in 2009. The minimum wage varies from state to state but must at least equal the federal standard. The US House of Representatives had approved an increase in the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, but the provision lacked sufficient support in the Senate to overcome procedural hurdles and was removed.

A Surge In Migrant Children Detained At The Border Is Straining Shelters

The number of unaccompanied migrant children detained along the southern border has tripled in the last two weeks to more than 3,250, filling facilities akin to jails as the Biden administration struggles to find room for them in shelters, according to documents obtained by The New York Times.

More than 1,360 of the children have been detained beyond the 72 hours permitted by law before a child must be transferred to a shelter, according to one of the documents, dated March 8. The figures highlight the growing pressure on President Biden to address the increased number of people trying to cross the border in the belief that he will be more welcoming to them than former President Donald J. Trump was.

The children are being held in facilities, managed by the Customs and Border Protection agency, that were built for adults. The border agency has been the subject of widespread criticism for the horrific conditions in its federal detention facilities, in which children are exposed to disease, hunger and overcrowding.

Under the law, the federal government is required to move unaccompanied children within three days from the border facilities to shelters managed by the Department of Health and Human Services, where they are held until they are placed with a sponsor. Homeland Security officials have often pointed to delays by Health and Human Services in picking up the children as a reason for the prolonged detention.

In A Big Week For Biden House To Vote Wednesday On His $19 Trillion Stimulus Plan

Senate passes $100B coronavirus stimulus bill

The House plans to vote Wednesday to clear President Bidens $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief plan and send it to the White House for his signature.

The bill, which passed the Senate on Saturday, is the first major legislative initiative of Mr. Bidens presidency, and it appears headed for enactment right around the midpoint of his first 100 days in office. Final approval will clear the way for his administration to beat a March 14 deadline, when federal unemployment benefits are set to begin lapsing, for putting in place the next round of pandemic aid.

Democrats, who have rushed the measure through Congress, were already touting its sweeping components in a series of events and speeches around the country.

This legislation represents the boldest action taken on behalf of the American people since the Great Depression, said Representative Pete Aguilar of California, a leading Democrat.

The far-reaching legislation would send direct payments of up to $1,400 to hundreds of millions of Americans extend a $300-per-week supplemental unemployment benefit until early September and provide funding for states, local governments and schools, as well as for coronavirus testing and vaccine distribution. It also amounts to an ambitious effort to combat poverty, instituting a substantial one-year expansion of the child tax credit, among other provisions that would benefit low-income people.

Bidens Dogs Were Sent Back To Delaware After A Biting Incident They Will Return To The White House Soon

President Bidens two German shepherds were shipped back home to Delaware for a temporary vacation after Major, the youngest, showed aggressive behavior toward an unfamiliar person who surprised him, Mr. Bidens press secretary Jen Psaki said Tuesday.

The dogs will return to the White House soon, after spending time with a caretaker at the family house in Wilmington, Ms. Psaki told reporters at the White House.

Ms. Psaki did not provide many details. She did, however, say there had been some kind of an incident resulting in a minor injury that was handled by the White House medical unit, with no further treatment needed.

The dogs are still getting acclimated to their new surroundings, Ms. Psaki said.

The Delaware trip was already in the works before the episode, she added .

A report by CNN on Monday evening said that the dogs, Champ and Major, had been moved after Major had what one person described as a biting incident with a member of the White Houses security staff.

A person familiar with the dogs whereabouts said it was typical for Champ, and Major, to be shuffled back to Delaware when Jill Biden, the first lady, is on the road Dr. Biden is currently on the West Coast.

The dogs joined the Bidens at the White House shortly after the family relocated to Washington. Since then, they have been allowed to roam unleashed on the White House grounds. They are often part of the backdrop in Oval Office photos.

Senate Passes $19 Trillion Covid Relief Bill With No Gop Support

As a result, Democrats dragged out the first vote of the day for 11 hours and 50 minutes, setting a record for the longest Senate vote.

In the end, Manchin agreed to support a provision backed by other Democrats that also allows the first $10,200 of the jobless benefits to be nontaxable for incomes up to $150,000.

Biden was in touch with Manchin during the course of the negotiations on the unemployment benefits compromise, a source familiar with the discussions said.

“Today the Senate passed a Covid-19 relief package that will help kill the Covid-19 pandemic and set us on the right track to economic recovery,” Manchin said after the vote. “I am proud to vote for this relief package and I look forward to seeing the president sign this bill into law.”

$900b Covid Relief Bill Passed By Congress Sent To Trump

WASHINGTON Congress passed a $900 billion pandemic relief package Monday night that would finally deliver long-sought cash to businesses and individuals and resources to vaccinate a nation confronting a frightening surge in COVID-19 cases and deaths.

Lawmakers tacked on a $1.4 trillion catchall spending bill and thousands of pages of other end-of-session business in a massive bundle of bipartisan legislation as Capitol Hill prepared to close the books on the year. The bill goes to President Donald Trump for his signature, which is expected in the coming days.

The Senate, meanwhile, was also on track to pass a one-week stopgap spending bill to avert a partial government shutdown at midnight and give Trump time to sign the sweeping legislation.

Democrats promised more aid to come once Biden takes office, but Republicans were signaling a wait-and-see approach.

Whats In The $19 Trillion Us Covid

Here are highlights of what is in the bill that is expected to be signed into law by President Biden later this week.

The US Congress is preparing to send President Joe Biden an enormous $1.9 trillion economic stimulus and COVID-19 relief package that policymakers hope will set the stage for a recovery from the devastating coronavirus pandemic in the United States.

The bill provides direct payments to individual US citizens, tax credits for families with children, and hundreds of billions in bailouts for state and local governments, pension funds, small businesses, public schools, and healthcare providers.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Monday the bill should help the US return to full employment next year.

We have a K-shaped recovery going on, in which high-income people are doing much better than those at the bottom of the economic ladder low-wage workers and minorities, Yellen said in an interview on the MSNBC news outlet.

House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters at the Capitol on Monday the House would likely vote on the bill on Wednesday.

Here are highlights of what is in the COVID-19 relief bill passed by the Senate on March 6 and now awaiting final passage by the US House of Representatives.
