Keep An Eye On Your Bank Account And Mail
Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said last week that direct deposit payments would continue into this week. The official payment date for those direct deposit payments is Jan. 4, according to the IRS.
If you received your first stimulus payment via direct deposit, that is likely how youll receive the secondbut it isnt a guarantee. If the information the IRS has on file for you has changed, for example, you can probably expect a mailed payment this time around . In general, the IRS and Treasury urge those who dont get their payment via direct deposit by early January to watch their mail carefullyeven if you think you should have gotten your payment by direct deposit.
If youre expecting your payment in the mailwhich will come in the form of a check or debit cardyoull likely have to wait a bit longer to receive it. The cutoff date for the IRS to issue payments is Jan. 15, according to the text of the most recent coronavirus relief package. Last week, the IRS said that paper checks would start to be mailed on Dec. 30, but that deadline indicates that yours might not be in the mail until mid-January.
You can also use the Get My Payment tool to track stimulus payments. The tool will tell you if your payment was sent, and in what form . If it says Payment Status Not Available, you were either not eligible, or the IRS wasnt able to issue the second payment, so youll need to claim it when you file your taxes.
Problems With Temporary Account Deposits
In the case of stimulus check deposits in error into temporary accounts such as those provided by tax preparation companies at the time the 2019 return was filed, the IRS indicated that they are taking corrective action to redirect the payments to the correct accounts.
Some recipients may have directed their payment to the temporary bank account set up when their 2019 tax return was filed. The IRS and tax industry partners are taking immediate steps to redirect stimulus payments to the correct account for those affected. The IRS anticipates that many additional taxpayers will receive payments following this effort, the IRS states on the website.
The IRSs solution for claiming any economic stimulus payment due is to claim it through a Refund Recovery Credit on your 2020 tax return.
What Can I Do If I Have Not Received My Eip Money By Those Deadlines
If you have not received all or some portion of your Economic Impact Payments by the deadlines above, you will have to file a 2020 tax return and claim these amounts. You claim them on line 30 of the 2020 Form 1040 as a “Recovery Rebate Credit“. This is another name for the EIP stimulus payments. If you owe back child support, the CARES Act allowed a reduction or offset to your first stimulus payment for back child support. However, your second and third stimulus payments can’t be garnished for back child support.

Youre Not Sure About Eligibility
Payments being sent out this month are largely based on the most recent tax returns the IRS has available, for 2019. The amount you receive as an initial payment will be based on that data, though you may be eligible for more.
Eligible individuals with an adjusted gross income under $75,000, heads of household under $112,500, and married couples filing jointly under $150,000 are eligible for the full $600 payment. After that, payments phase out with reduced payments up to $87,000 in income for individuals, $124,500 for heads of household, and $174,000 for married couples filing jointly. Children under 17 claimed on 2019 federal tax returns each qualify for an additional $600, while children 17 and older and adult dependents are not eligible.

The IRS has explained that the first payment made might be based on a taxpayer’s 2019 tax return, and the second payment is a “plus-up” payment that is based on the taxpayer’s 2020 tax return.
The IRS has also said that part of the problem may be with “injured spouse” claims on a tax return. of only one spouse, the “injured” spouse can request a refund.) The IRS says that these couples will get their payments as two separate payments.
If you haven’t received the full amount, wait until you get your Notice 1444, Your Economic Impact Payment, from the IRS. That letter should have the correct amount of your stimulus payment. If you don’t receive deposits or checks in that amount, you may have to file a Recovery Rebate Credit . How To Stretch Your Money Until The Spring
While many Americans might have to wait until the spring to get their tax refunds including the stimulus rebate, there could be additional federal help on the horizon.
President-elect Joe Biden made campaign promises to enact sweeping coronavirus relief measures, and Democrats have spoken optimistically about the possibility of $2,000 direct payments now that they’ve regained control of the Senate.
But some people need money immediately to help with everyday expenses. While it might seem like overly simplistic advice, it’s really important to review what resources you have at your immediate disposal to shore up your finances. That might include asking a friend or family member for support, doing research into forbearance programs for any loans, credit cards or mortgages, and/or seeking out ways to make some extra cash quickly.
For consumers with good credit, consider opening a 0% APR credit card so you can pay for essentials while not racking up interest charges. Depending on your expenses, you might be able to pay off the balance with your tax refunds before the intro period ends.
The U.S. Bank Visa® Platinum Card offers an introductory 0% interest for the first 20 billing cycles on both balance transfers and new purchases . That’s a long grace period for making the purchases you need now then paying them back later.

Yes. Some people who typically dont file a tax return were required to register for a stimulus payment. If you didnt register and didnt receive a maximum $1,200 payment from the first stimulus package, you may be eligible to receive those funds through a tax credit by filing a 2020 tax return when the IRS system opens Feb. 12, 2021.
If youre a non-filer who didnt register for the CARES Act stimulus payment, you cannot do so for the second round of payments. Youll have to wait to file a 2020 tax return to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit.
Havent Received Your Second Stimulus Check Request A Payment Tracking From The Irs
If you have not received the second stimulus check, you must do this action to find out what happened to it. There are several reasons why the second stimulus check may not have reached you.
If you should have received it, but havent yet, you may need to contact the IRS to request a Payment Tracker to trace that money.
You should request a Payment Tracker if the Get My Payment tool shows that your payment was issued, but you have not received it within the following time frames:
-5 days from the date of deposit shown in Get My Payment and if your bank says it has not received it.-4 weeks from when it was mailed to your home address.-6 weeks from when it was mailed and you have a forwarding address on file at your local post office.-9 weeks since it was mailed and you have an overseas address.
To request a Payment Tracker, you must call the IRS at 800-919-9835 or mail or fax a completed Form 3911. Find out where to mail or fax that form in the state where you live on the IRS website.
Note that you should not send in a Form 3911 if you have already requested a telephone tracing. And you should not request a Payment Tracking to determine if you are eligible for a check or to confirm the amount you should receive.

The IRS says that it may take three to four weeks to receive a check after its mailed. If it has been weeks since the Get My Payment tool says the payment was mailed, and you havent received it, you can request a payment trace. The IRS will research what happened to your check if the check wasnt cashed, you will need to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your next tax return. If the IRS finds that the check was cashed, youll receive a claim package from the Treasury Department with a copy of the cashed check and instructions on filing a claim.
Similarly, if the Get My Payment tool says your payment was direct-deposited, but the money doesnt show in your bank account after five days, first check with your bank. If the bank says it hasnt received a payment, you can request a payment trace.

My Third Stimulus Payment Was Too Low
Many individuals and families will find that their third stimulus checks are lower than they thought. That could be because people who make over a certain amount have part of the $1,400 payment taken away. For example, single people who make over $75,000 in adjusted gross income will have their second stimulus checks reduced by 28% of the income over $75,000. Married people filing jointly and heads of household will have their payments reduced by a similar amount.
The third stimulus payment is technically based on your 2021 income, but the IRS is using your 2020 tax return to estimate it. If your income goes down in 2021, making you eligible for a payment, or a higher payment, you’ll be able to file a tax return for your 2021 taxes and you’ll receive the stimulus money you didn’t getâit’s called a recovery rebate credit.

Q How Will I Get My Third Stimulus Check If Im An American Living Overseas
A. There are two ways overseas Americans can get their third stimulus payment: Direct deposit or through the mail.
You should get your check via direct deposit if you received your latest tax refund through direct deposit or if the IRS has your direct deposit info from the last round of stimulus checks and you havent filed yet this year.
You need to have an account with a U.S. bank in order to get direct deposit.
We recommend you update your address if you:
- Dont know what address is on file
- Have moved to a different address
- Want your check sent somewhere other than the address they have on file
In addition to Form 8822, Change of Address, you may be able to update your address via phone, through a written statement, or on your tax return. You can see the IRS most up-to-date address change info on the IRS website.
Q. What happens if I live abroad and my direct deposit payment is returned by my U.S. financial institution?
A. Once your payment is returned, the IRS will issue your payment by mail as a check or U.S. Treasury-issued debit card. Typically, IRS will reissue the payment by mail within two weeks. Once the payment is reissued, the IRS Get My Payment tool will update to reflect your payment status.
Q. What if my third stimulus check was for the wrong amount?
A. If you didnt receive the full amount of the third payment you were owed , there are two times when you may receive additional stimulus money:

Who Qualifies For The Second Stimulus Check
The IRS has set AGI limits to determine taxpayer eligibility. The ranges for the second stimulus check are broken down as follows:
- Individuals with AGI of $75,000 or less qualify to get the full $600 second stimulus check. Individuals making more than $75,000 and up to $87,000 receive a reduced amount.
- Heads of household with AGI of $112,500 or less qualify for the full $600, and those making over $112,500 and up to $124,500 get a reduced amount.
Note that the second stimulus checks also provide an additional $600 payment for every qualifying dependent under the age of 17. So if you filed your taxes as a married couple with three children, you could get up to $3,000.
Currently, theres no limit on the number of dependents that you can claim as long as they are within the age requirement and you claimed them on your tax return. But keep in mind that if you claimed your child as a dependent and they are over age 17, you are not eligible to receive $600 extra on your stimulus check. Your child does not qualify for a stimulus check of their own either.
The table below breaks down payments by AGI level for single and joint filers:
