Stimulus check 2021: Who gets one and when can you expect to receive the money?

by Adam Shell, AARP, February 4, 2022

Nobody wants to leave money on the table, especially a stimulus payment from the U.S. government that theyre eligible for but didnt receive. In late January the Internal Revenue Service announced that all third-round stimulus checks had been sent. But the IRS also noted that not all eligible Americans received the full amount theyre entitled to.

The good news? Theres still time to get whats owed to you.

Uncle Sam which issued 175 million third-round payments, totaling over $400 billion, through the end of 2021 reminded people that they can claim any remaining stimulus money theyre entitled to but didnt get by claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 income tax return.

The rebate, which comes as a tax credit of up to $1,400 per eligible person on your 2021 return, will either lower the amount of tax you owe or boost the size of your refund. The golden prize of a tax return is a tax credit, says Mark Steber, chief tax information officer at Jackson Hewitt, a tax preparation service. The Recovery Rebate Credit is a dollar-for-dollar tax-liability offset.

How Stimulus Payments For Adult Dependents Are Determined

Adult dependents are eligible for a stimulus check worth exactly what the adult who claimed them receive, a provision exclusive to this round of stimulus payments. In other words, if your head of household or parents were each eligible for a $1,400 payment, each dependent would be eligible for a $1,400 payment as well.

Pay close attention to eligibility requirements, particularly because income cutoffs are much steeper this time around. To receive the full $1,400 check, head of households have to earn no more than $112,500 a year, while married couples must make no more than $150,000.

After that, stimulus checks phase out drastically. Married couples earning $160,000 or more and heads of households making $120,000 or above wont be eligible for a check at all.

Information would be based on your households Adjusted Gross Income on its most recent income information, likely your 2020 or 2019 tax return.

In the previous two stimulus rounds, households only earned extra money for dependents if they were under the age of 16, at an amount of $500 through the CARES Act and then $600 via the second supplemental $900 billion package.

Is The Child Tax Credit Expanded

Yes, the American Rescue Plan includes a temporary increase for the child tax credit for 2021.

The credit is worth $2,000 per child under 17 that can be claimed as a dependent.

It temporarily boosts the credit to $3,000 per child, or $3,600 per child under 6. It allows 17-year-old children to qualify for the first time.

The credit will begin to phase out for those earning more than $75,000 a year, or $150,000 for those married filing jointly. The IRS will look to prior-year tax returns to determine who qualifies for the higher credit. If a return for 2020 hasnt been filed yet, the agency will look to 2019 returns.

Families who aren’t eligible for the higher child credit may still be able to claim $2,000 credit per child.

WASHINGTON Julesa Webb resumed an old habit: serving her children three meals a day. Corrine Young paid the water bill and stopped bathing at her neighbors apartment. Chenetta Ray cried, thanked Jesus and rushed to spend the money on a medical test to treat her cancer.

In offering most Americans two more rounds of stimulus checks in the past six months, totaling $2,000 a person, the federal government effectively conducted a huge experiment in safety net policy. Supporters said a quick, broad outpouring of cash would ease the economic hardships caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Skeptics called the policy wasteful and expensive.

The aid followed an earlier round of stimulus checks, sent a year ago, and the results are being scrutinized for lessons on how to help the needy in less extraordinary times.

Among households with children, reports of food shortages fell 42 percent from January through April. A broader gauge of financial instability fell 43 percent. Among all households, frequent anxiety and depression fell by more than 20 percent.

It bridged a gap, Ms. Ray said, while she waited for slower forms of assistance, like rental aid.

What Impact Will Tax Season Have On My Stimulus Payment

Taxes for 2020 are due on May 17, 2021 . The IRS began accepting tax returns on Feb. 12, 2021. This means your third-round stimulus payment could arrive in the middle of tax season. This alone creates questions such as Do I need to file my 2020 taxes right away? Will the IRS accept my 2019 income? and, of course, Does this mean stimulus payments will be delayed?

Due to the winter storms that hit Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana in February 2021, the IRS has delayed the 2020 federal individual and business tax filing deadline for those states until June 15, 2021.

In answer to the first two questions, you dont need to file your 2020 taxes right away, but depending on your income in 2019 and 2020, you may want to. The IRS will use the latest year they have on file when your stimulus is processed. This means if all they have is your 2019 return, then thats what they will use if you earned less in 2020, then it could be better for you if that number is used.

While its possible that your stimulus check or even tax refund check could be delayed this year, according to the IRS, the additional programming and testing that resulted in the late Feb. 12, 2021, start date for tax season makes that unlikely.

Is There A Maximum Number Of Checks A Household Can Receive

All dependents are now eligible for stimulus payments in the third round. The payment should include all eligible dependents and will be paid in one lump sum to whoever claims them, according to Tucker.

There is no limit defined in the law, however normal IRS checks and balances probably will trigger a second look with a tax return with 10 family members but certainly is legal, says Steber. Remember, any individual who is a taxpayers dependent will not get their own check, instead they should be on the parent return giving the parent the additional money.

Previously, if you had a child over the age of 16 or had an adult dependent, they didn’t receive a stimulus. The payments would amount to $1,400 for each dependent child. Eligible families will get a $1,400 payment per qualifying dependent claimed on their tax return, including college students, adults with disabilities, parents and grandparents.

If You Are A Head Of Household And Not Married How Does Your Stimulus Payment Change

Single taxpayers with adjusted gross income of $75,000 or below will qualify for a full $1,400 economic impact payment. From here, it begins to phase out for those making above $80,000. It would be $2,800 for a married couple filing jointly, plus an additional $1,400 for each dependent child. Married couples with incomes up to $150,000 will get the full payment and will phase out for those earning above $160,000.

A Head of Household taxpayer isnt eligible if their income is $120,000 or greater, although there is a phase-out between $112,500 and $120,000. Otherwise, a Head of Household will receive a $1,400 stimulus payment for themselves and each qualifying dependent with a Social Security Number, regardless of age, according to Steber.
