In principle anyone who is a US citizen is eligible for the stimulus check, provided they meet the earnings limits, including citizens living outside the country.

In order to be elegible for the stimulus check you need to earn under the thresholds. These are based on your earnings as declared on your tax return . To qualify for the full amount you need to have earned

– $75,000 or less as an individual

– $112,000 for head of household filers

– $150,000 for married couples filing joint returns.

Above that level the amounts are reduced by $5 for every income above the limits, meaning there is no payment for individuals earning above $99,000, head of households earning about $136,500 and married couples filing jointly above $198,000.

The earnings used for the calculation are those from the 2019 tax return if filed, or 2018 if 2019 has not yet been filed.

How Will You Receive Your Payment

The majority of payments will be sent via direct deposit. The IRS states that those who do not receive their stimulus payments as direct deposit will likely receive it as a mailed check.

Payment may also be sent as a prepaid debit card, as known as an EIP card. If payment is issued as a debit card, you will receive a new debit card, even if you had a previous EIP card. The new payment will not be added to an EIP card from a previous stimulus payment.

Make sure to keep a close eye on your mail over the coming weeks to ensure your check or EIP card is not lost in your junk mail. If your mailbox is not secure, the IRS recommends that you check it regularly.

If you receive Social Security or another federal benefit, you will generally receive your payment in the same method those payments are received. The IRS has not yet announced when these payments will be sent, but estimates that information will be available shortly.

For married couples filing jointly: Your stimulus check is reduced by $5 for every $100 you earned above the $150,000 AGI threshold. Stimulus payments phase out completely for this group at $174,000 AGI.

For heads of households: Your stimulus check is reduced by $5 for every $100 you earned above the $112,500 AGI threshold. Stimulus payments phase out completely for this group at $124,500.

Who Gets A Third Stimulus Check Who Doesn’t

If you’re an American citizen or what’s officially called a “resident alien,” you’re probably eligible for the third stimulus payment. This includes incarcerated people and those living abroad, but not taxpayers above a certain income level.

In addition, the American Rescue Plan says people will receive “$1,400 multiplied by the number of dependents of the taxpayer for such taxable year.” Unlike with the first and second round of payments, there’s no age limit for the third stimulus check. College students and adult dependents qualify for the payments, but most won’t receive the deposits themselves. Dependent stimulus checks will be sent to the taxpayer who claims them on their returns.

Basically, anyone who’s not a nonresident alien or someone else’s dependent is eligible to get the direct payment. Deceased people and those without valid Social Security numbers for employment didn’t qualify for previous EIPs, either.

What If I Dont Have A Bank Account

If you dont have a bank account, a paper check will be sent to the address you listed on your tax return.

Direct deposit is the quickest and safest way to get payments. Alternatives to receiving a paper check are opening a bank account or using a prepaid debit card. Once you get a card, you may need to contact the company directly to find the account and routing numbers needed for direct deposit. To find a bank, you can view this list of accounts offered by financial institutions that meet national standards. You can also use payment apps like CashApp, Venmo, or PayPal.

Do not provide the bank account information for someone else. Different names on the tax return and bank account will trigger a reject of the deposit, causing the IRS to send you a paper check which will delay the delivery of your payment.
