It sounds like a question on a high school physics quiz: The government is giving you $1,200. You’re not sure when it’s being sent or when you’ll receive it. How can you determine where the money is?
This is what millions of Americans are asking about their coronavirus stimulus payments, which started going out last week. The IRS is in charge, but it’s still scary to think about an important $1,200 check getting lost in the mail .
Here’s what we know about how to find out where your relief money is.
What If The Irs Sent The Check To A Closed Account
Because people can’t update their bank account information on the “Get My Payment” site, there’s concern that some checks might be sent to accounts that were recently closed. If that’s the case, the IRS says you’ll have to wait until you file your 2020 tax returns.
The stimulus checks are actually a tax rebate that can be applied to your annual tax returns but that means people may be waiting weeks or even months for their stimulus money to show up through their tax refund.

If you’re eligible, you’ll need to know the amount of money the IRS allotted you, which you can find out online or from the letter the agency mailed. The IRS said the updated Get My Payment tracker won’t give you information on the first and second checks. Instead, you need to set up and check your IRS account for information on those payments.
Where Is My Stimulus Check
Where is my stimulus check? Its a popular question that many Americans are still asking. If you didnt receive your stimulus check through direct deposit, you are likely to receive your stimulus check, also known as an Economic Impact Payment, in the mail as a paper check or debit card.
- If you filed a 2018 or 2019 income tax return, the IRS is sending stimulus checks each week based on gross income based on this stimulus check schedule. Stimulus checks are being mailed in inverse order of gross incomemeaning that tax filers will relatively lower gross income will receive their stimulus checks sooner than tax filers with higher gross income.
- You can still check the Get My Payment tool on the IRS website. However, many people are still receiving error messages and experiencing glitches when they try to get information about their stimulus check.
- If you receive Social Security or disability benefits, you may have received your stimulus check through direct deposit. If not, you will likely receive your stimulus payment by mail.

Tracking Stimulus Checks Sent By Mail
You may be able to track your Covid19 stimulus check if you expect to receive it by mail. The way to track your paper check is by using the free U.S. Postal Service tool Informed Delivery.
Of course, this service is not specifically designed to track stimulus checks in the mail. However, you can use it to find out if your payment is on its way and when to expect it. This is a great way to ease some anxiety about when to expect your check.
When Will Your Stimulus Check Arrive

The stimulus payments are being distributed to taxpayers either by direct deposit or by paper checks or debit cards arriving by mail. If youve been paying your taxes via direct deposit, the IRS should already have your banking information on file and will make the payment directly to your bank account.
For direct deposit, the IRS uses data already in its system to determine which bank account to send the payment to. That most likely happens by attaching a routing and account number to your 2020 or 2019 tax filing, as well as inputting one earlier in 2020 for receiving your first stimulus check. Those receiving payments by mail will have to wait a little longer.
This round, the Treasury Department is also working with the Bureau of the Fiscal Service to identify federal records of recent payments to and from the government to find a possible bank account alternative for delivering stimulus payments as a direct deposit. The move helped accelerate the stimulus check delivery timeline, the IRS said in a statement.
In most cases, individuals arent required to take action to receive their checks and are discouraged from contacting the IRS, according to a Treasury Department release.
The IRS and Treasury Department anticipate sending out more tranches on a weekly basis moving forward.
