Could Tax Day Be Delayed Again
Its unlikely but not impossible, experts say.
Any taxpayer who feels they will need more time to file their 2020 income taxes can get an automatic extension by filing Form 4868 and will have until October 15 to do so. But pay at least 90% of your tax bill by May 17 to avoid additional penalty and interest on any balance due, tax professionals caution.
While Most People Recognize The Terminology Of Both Stimulus Checks And Economic Impact Payments A Sizable Minority Struggle With The More Legal Eip Nomenclature And Most Do Not Know About The Recovery Rebate Credit
In our qualitative research, while interviewees generally referred to EIPs as stimulus checks, nearly all ultimately discerned that the EIP program described on Notice 1444-A was indeed the same program. But the connection was not always obvious. Nancy started by telling us that she had not gotten any stimulus checks, but later mentioned that perhaps she had, although it wasnt clear to her:
The only thing I got I was very surprised this year, in January, I got a check from the government for $600 that I didnt expect and I was surprised. It says stimulus check or something Treasury Department. … I thought it was the stimulus check, part of it or something I remember it said Treasury Department and I dont remember what else it said… I found the check! It says United States Treasury, Economic Impact Payment, President Donald J Trump. Thats why I didnt rip it off because it has my name on it! And address and apartment number and everything so I read it. If I didnt read it, I would have thrown it in the trash. Thank god I read it… Because it looks similar to the check I get from FPL about life insurance. I thought it was one of those advertisements. Nancy

What To Do If You’re Experiencing Homelessness
If you don’t have a permanent address or a bank account, you can still get a stimulus check. “The IRS has been continuing to work directly with groups inside and outside the tax community to get information directly to people experiencing homelessness and other groups to help them receive Economic Impact Payments,” IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said.
The IRS recommends using a trusted friend, relative or shelter’s address so the agency can mail your payment if you’re unable to receive direct deposit. The agency also says banks will help a person without an account to open a low-cost or no-cost bank account.
Nonfilers Are Likely Eligible To Get Both Of The 2020 Stimulus Checks

Most nonfilers fall below the income limits stipulated by each stimulus package and would be eligible for the full amount in each round — $1,200 per person under the 2020 CARES Act passed in March 2020, and $600 per person under the December 2020 stimulus bill. Find the full eligibility rules for each stimulus check here.
If you receive SSI or SSDI, you should have received at least a portion of both of those stimulus checks automatically — the IRS obtained the names of Social Security recipients and SSI beneficiaries from the Social Security Administration in the spring and made the payments to them automatically, according to Janet Holtzblatt, a senior fellow at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center.
If either of your checks are missing, however, you’ll have to take the extra steps below.
The IRS started processing tax returns on Feb. 12. The federal tax return deadline was extended to May 17.

How Do I Get My Stimulus Check That Was Lost In The Mail
If you got a notice through the website Get My Payment or received a Notice 1444 showing your payment was issued, you should request a payment trace if it has been:
- 4 weeks since the payment was mailed
- 6 weeks since the payment was mailed, and you have a forwarding address
- 9 weeks since the payment was mailed, and you have a foreign address
If the check wasn’t cashed, the IRS will reverse the payment and notify you, and then you can claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 taxes.
However, if the check was cashed, the Treasury Departments Bureau of the Fiscal Service will send you a claim package and then you have to follow the process it comes with. Treasury will review the claim, but you shouldn’t file for the credit in your 2020 taxes until the trace is complete.

Stimulus Checks: No Taxable Income Or Address
Q. Im a single person that has a valid SSN, but I do not file a tax return because I do not have any taxable income. What should I do if I didnt receive any stimulus money?
A. For the first two rounds of economic impact payments, the taxpayer will need to file a 2020 tax return with the IRS and claim the recovery rebate credit. Eligible taxpayers who did not receive the maximum amount of advance payments and taxpayers who missed receiving the first or second stimulus payments altogether can claim a credit on their tax return for the amount they qualified for but did not receive as an advance payment. For example, a single taxpayer who was eligible for but did not receive either economic impact payment would be eligible to claim a recovery rebate credit in the amount of $1,800 .
If this same eligible taxpayer did not receive the third economic impact payment, they should receive that from the IRS after their 2020 tax return is processed. Once the IRS processes the taxpayers 2020 tax return, the IRS will use the information from the 2020 tax return to determine eligibility for the third round of payments. In this case, if the IRS determines the taxpayer is eligible for the full third economic impact payment and no payment has been made to that taxpayer, the IRS will issue an additional $1,400 to that individual. The FAQs available on this IRS webpage help explain the process someone should follow in this situation to complete their tax return.

Child And Dependent Care Tax Credit
If you paid for childcare so you can work or look for work, you can claim the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit. You can also claim this credit if you pay for the care of an adult dependent who is unable to care for themselves so that you can work or look for work.
This tax credit usually can reduce the amount of federal taxes you owe. For 2022 only, the tax credit is worth more than ever and is fully refundable. This means that if you dont owe any taxes, you can get the money as part of your tax refund.
To get the credit, you will need to know how much you spent on childcare in 2021. You can refer to bank account statements, receipts, or any documentation that tracked your expenses.

Typical Tax Season Protocol For Nonfilers And What’s Different In 2021
When it comes to stimulus checks, the IRS refers to people who didn’t have to file taxes in 2018 or 2019 as nonfilers. This group includes:
While young adults age 17-24 who are claimed as dependents on someone else’s taxes don’t have to file taxes, they aren’t eligible for a first or second stimulus check due to the rules set out in the CARES Act and the . Find out more about when you can receive your own stimulus check here.
Typically during tax season, if you’re included in any of the above groups, you don’t have to file a federal tax return. However, if you received any health care tax credits or subsidies, you’ll need to file to keep receiving them. You can also still file to get back any taxes withheld from your pay, or to claim certain refundable tax credits. That’s what you’re going to have to do this year to claim your missing stimulus money.

Here’s What You Need To Know About Stimulus Check Rules
In response to the novel coronavirus, lawmakers authorized two direct payments to Americans. The first, provided by the CARES Act, was worth up to $1,200 per eligible adult and $500 for each eligible child dependent. The second, authorized by a $900 billion relief bill signed into law in December, was worth up to $600 per eligible adult and dependent child. Most Americans have now received the money for both of those payments.
When the money was appropriated, Congress authorized the IRS to distribute the payments. As a result, you may be wondering whether you need to file taxes to get a stimulus check. The answer to this question is a bit more complicated than it may seem.
Here’s The Rule On Tax Filing And Stimulus Checks

When stimulus checks were authorized, the requirements for eligibility did not include filing or paying taxes. In other words, if your income is so low that you don’t have to file a tax return, you were still eligible for the payment.
However, the IRS did use information from your past returns both to determine eligibility and to find your financial information to deliver your check. In other words, if you didn’t file a return in 2018 or in 2019, you were still eligible for a check, but the IRS wouldn’t have known where to find you to pay you your money.
To get around this problem, the IRS collected information from the Social Security Administration and the VA so it could send out checks to individuals who receive these benefits but don’t file returns. The agency also set up an online form for non-filers that people could use to provide the necessary details for the IRS to send their stimulus payments. Those who don’t get SSA or VA benefits and who don’t file returns were able to use this form. And individuals who do get benefits could also use the non-filers form to alert the IRS to their dependents and claim the stimulus money for them .
You’ll now have to file a return because the stimulus payments that were made were an advance on a tax credit. It’s late to get the advance but not too late to claim the credit, which is being referred to as a Recovery Rebate Credit.

How Do I File My Taxes If I Didnt Receive A Notice 1444
I received one of the stimulus checks in 2020 and one in 2021, do I report both in 2020 taxes or on the years received?
Brittany Benson, senior tax research analyst, The Tax Institute at H& R Block, said even if you dont receive, or didnt keep a Notice 1444 for a stimulus payment, you should still enter the amount you received in advance payments to accurately calculate your recovery rebate credit. You can use an IRS online account and go to the tax records tab to see the amount of EIPs received.
The IRS suggests that you can check your IRS account online for the stimulus amount received, if you misplaced Form 1444 or Form 1444-B.
The IRS only began mailing out Form 1444-B for the second stimulus payments the first week of February. So theres a shot that form will show up in the mail soon. Dont throw it out.

I Never Got My Second Stimulus Check Even Though It Says It Was Mail Can I Claim It On My Taxes
If you are eligible for a stimulus check and it was lost, stolen or destroyed, you should request a payment trace so the IRS can determine if your payment was cashed.
If a trace is initiated and the IRS determines that the check wasn’t cashed, the IRS says it will credit your account for it but the IRS cannot reissue the payment. Instead, you will need to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return if eligible.
“If you are filing your 2020 tax return before your trace is complete, do not include the payment amount on line 16 or 19 of the Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet,” the IRS says. “You may receive a notice saying your Recovery Rebate Credit was changed, but an adjustment will be made after the trace is complete. If you do not request a trace on your payment, you may receive an error when claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return.”
