Second stimulus check is very likely coming in July, U.S. Senate says

In our dedicated stimulus checks section, youll find a range of news articles on a possible fourth direct payment, in addition to information on the third round of stimulus checks, which began going out in March following Congress’ approval of President Biden’s $1.9tn American Rescue Plan.

The IRS has announced that the new monthly Child Tax Credit payments will begin from 15 July, and families can expect payments on that date through December as long as it does not fall on a weekend or holiday.

This means that half of the total value of the credit will be distributed this year, the remainder can be claimed next year during tax season. Some individuals and families are opting to forgo monthly payments and claim the full credit next Spring.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new system, and how much it could be worth to your family…

How To Qualify For The Child Tax Credit Payment

The IRS said there will be income thresholds for families who want to receive a check, per CNBC. The current thresholds are:

  • $75,000 for single parents
  • $112,500 for the head of the household
  • $150,000 for a married couple who file a joint return, or who qualify as a widow or widower.

Update On A Fourth Stimulus Check

Millions have been clamoring for recurring stimulus payments, and some lawmakers have expressed support for more relief aid through the pandemic. But President Joe Biden hasn’t pledged support to a fourth check, focusing instead on his proposed family and jobs packages and the recent infrastructure deal.

In a press conference on June 3, White House press secretary Jen Psaki played down the possibility of a fourth check, asserting that the administration has already put forward an economic recovery plan. Through the debate in Washington over additional economic impact payments continues, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that there will be any more direct payments this year.

Biden Discusses Impact Of Stimulus Checks

In his latest public address, President Joe Biden discussed the impact of the $1,400 stimulus checks that came as part of his $1.9trn American Rescue Plan.

The American Rescue Plan delivered economic benefits directly to the American people. Because of the that 167 million of those rescue payments of up to $1,400 have gone out to individual families,”said Biden, who has still not committed to sending out a fourth stimulus payment. See video below…

Are $2000 Monthly Stimulus Checks Possible

In response to President Biden’s American Jobs Plan proposal, a group of 21 senators on March 30 sent a letter urging the inclusion of stimulus checks in the legislation. The group called for recurring payments as long as the pandemic lockdown continued, meaning people would get monthly checks from the government. No amount for the payments was specified.

We urge you to include recurring direct payments and automatic unemployment insurance extensions tied to economic conditions in your Build Back Better long-term economic plan, wrote the group, which consisted of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Massachusetts, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, and others.

An earlier stimulus check proposal, put forward during the early days of the American Rescue Plan in late January, also suggested monthly payments until the pandemic is over, but did not mention an amount. However, Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minnesota, tweeted earlier in January that she wanted to see $2,000 per month.

If that amount sounds familiar, it’s because now-Vice President Kamala Harris threw her support behind $2,000 recurring checks during the negotiations for the second stimulus check legislation in the summer of 2020.

The proposal has also gained plenty of support outside of Congress: Six online petitions calling for $2,000 monthly stimulus checks until the end of the pandemic have been posted. The biggest petition, on Change.org, has been signed by more than 2.8 million people and has a stated goal of reaching 3 million.

The Truth About A ‘fourth’ Stimulus Check Coming In July

People have been asking the question as to whether they will be getting a fourth stimulus check from the IRS in July 2021 and the answer is a definite “no” at least at the moment. The problem is, people are asking the wrong question. What they should instead be inquiring is whether people will be getting an additional cash benefit in July. For many Americans, the answer to this question is “yes.”

Here’s how it’s all supposed to work.

This benefit will reach adults with minor children living at home in the form of monthly payments for each qualifying child during the months July through December . The per child payment will be either $250 or $300 a month for each qualifying child, depending on the age of the child. The credit is $3,600 per child under the age of 6 and $3,000 per child for ages 6-17. Families are eligible if they meet income guidelines of $150,000 annually for married joint-filers or $112,500 for heads of household, and $75,000 for single parents.

None of this is to say there may not eventually be an official fourth stimulus, as this is still a popular topic in political circles . This July benefit, however, is specifically child-related.

Don’t Throw Away The Irs Letter About Your Stimulus Payment

Hold on to that IRS letter that confirms your stimulus payment, including giving the amount and how the IRS sent your money. That letter from the IRS — Notice 1444-C — is your proof that the IRS sent a payment in case you don’t actually receive it or if you received less than you qualify for and need to claim the missing amount later. Here’s more on what to do with that IRS letter.

What About People With Itins

VERIFY: Are you getting a 4th stimulus check?

You still need a work-authorizing Social Security Number to be eligible for this stimulus. However, there are important changes since the first round of stimulus checks.

  • In the first stimulus rollout, any non-SSN holder on a joint return made everyone on that return ineligible. Big change: The new rounds of stimulus has corrected this problem. If you filed a joint return with a non-SSN holder, you are still eligible for the stimulus. See the below hypotheticals.
  • Situation: A single tax filer has an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number but no Social Security number .
  • This person is ineligible for the stimulus.
  • Situation: A spouse has a Social Security number and files married filing jointly on a tax return with a spouse who has an ITIN.
  • The SSN holder is now eligible to get a payment. If they have children on the tax return that have SSNs, these children will be eligible for the payment for each qualifying child.
  • Situation: Two ITIN holders file a joint return and claim young children who have SSNs.
  • The children who have SSNs are eligible for the payment.

How Do I Get Help Filing A 2020 Tax Return To Claim My Eip

The IRS recommends electronic filing, and we agree. It is a faster, more secure option. Paper forms will take much longer to be processed by IRS. You may qualify for free e-file software.

You can also call the Vermont 2-1-1 hotline and follow the menu options for tax preparation. Through this service you may be able to schedule an appointment with a free Volunteer Income Tax Preparation Assistance site. These sites are staffed by trained volunteers. They provide free preparation services to taxpayers who meet eligibility requirements.

Also, you can find Form 1040 and Form 1040 instructions on the IRS website. The instructions for the “Recovery Rebate Credit” are found on pages 57 – 59.

Do I Have To Pay Taxes On My Stimulus Payment

No. Since the stimulus check is considered a refundable tax credit, it is not classified as earned income. Hence not considered taxable income you will have to report in your 2020 tax return . It also wont affect your income for purposes of determining eligibility for federal government assistance or benefit programs.

This payment also does not have to be paid back if any over payment happens or your gross income in 2020 changes. This includes your income rising to above the qualifying thresholds. If you unexpectedly got the payment, congratulations! You get to keep it now.

    Returning Incorrect Stimulus Check Payments

A few people have commented that a spouse, relative or child who died since they filed a 2018 or 2019 tax return received a stimulus check payment. The IRS has provided official guidance on this issue which states that any payments made to someone who died before receipt of the payment should be returned to the IRS in full. The exception to this is for payments made to joint filers and one spouse who had not died before receipt of the Payment, in which case, you only need to return the portion of the Payment made on account of the decedent

Injured Spouse Claim And Spousal Claims

The IRS also stated that If you are married filing jointly and you filed an injured spouse claim with your 2019 tax return , half of the total payment will be sent to each spouse and your spouses stimulus check payment will be offset only for past-due child support. There is no need to file another injured spouse claim for the payment. I have received dozens of comments on this this, so hopefully this answers the questions many have had based on official IRS guidance.

Note that if you were current with your child support payments at the time of the stimulus eligibility determination but fell behind afterwards due to a COVID-19 related job loss, you would still be eligible to get the full stimulus payment.

    Updating Direct Deposit Information

This question has come up a lot in the hundreds of comments to this article. The IRS has setup a portal for individuals to provide their updated banking information to receive payments via direct deposit as opposed to checks in the mail. The IRS does recommend that 2018 Filers who need to change their account information or mailing address, file 2019 taxes electronically as soon as possible. That is the only way to let us know your new information. You can file for free via TurboTax.

This Is Who Will Start Getting $3600 In New Stimulus Checks In July

Stimulus Check Almost A Sure Thing For Those Making Under ...

We noted yesterday that what may well be the final $1,400 stimulus checks as part of President Joe Bidens $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief legislation have now started to be disbursed and that the political dynamic in Congress right now is such that this will probably be the last new stimulus check stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic for a while maybe ever.

So why are we now saying that even bigger stimulus payments are on their way, and starting in just a couple of months, no less? The answer has to do with a component of the $1.9 trillion stimulus law that we previously wrote about here, regarding a benefit thats completely separate from the $1.400 stimulus checks which represented the third such direct payment to tens of millions of Americans since the coronavirus pandemic began. This separate benefit were referring to provides an expanded child tax credit of up to $3,600 for working families, money that can be thought of as essentially an all-new stimulus payment and that will actually be paid out on a monthly basis.

Youll get $300 for each child under the age of 6.

Can Get I More Of The Child Tax Credit In A Lump Sum When I File My 2021 Taxes Instead Of Getting Half Of It In Advance Monthly Payments

Yes, you can opt out of monthly payments for any reason. To opt-out of the monthly payments, or unenroll, you can go to the IRS Child Tax Credit Update Portal. If you do choose not to receive any more monthly payments, youll get any remaining Child Tax Credit as a lump sum next year when you file your tax return.

How Much Will I Receive In Child Tax Credit Payments

Most families will receive the full amount: $3,600 for each child under age 6 and $3,000 for each child ages 6 to 17. To get money to families sooner, the IRS is sending families half of their 2021 Child Tax Credit as monthly payments of $300 per child under age 6 and $250 per child between the ages of 6 and 17.

This amount may vary by income. These people qualify for the full Child Tax Credit:

    • Families with a single parent with income under $112,500
    • Everyone else with income under $75,000

These people qualify for at least $2,000 of Child Tax Credit, which comes out to $166 per child each month:

    • Families with a single parent with income under $200,000
    • Everyone else with income under $200,000

Families with even higher incomes may receive smaller amounts or no credit at all.

Plans For A Fourth Stimulus Check Unlikely

Is a second stimulus check coming?

The claim is a hoax. No fourth stimulus check for July 30 has been announced by Congress.

This is not the first time such a claim has circulated on social media. In May, a Facebook post alleged a direct payment of $2,000 per person would be arriving by Memorial Day weekend, which USA TODAY debunked.

While some Democratic lawmakers have clamored for increased federal aid, including a fourth round of stimulus, the latter is unlikely to happen, USA TODAY has previously reported.

What eligible Americans will be receiving instead through President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan passed in March are payments through the Child Tax Credit and extended unemployment benefits.

    Fourth Stimulus Check Amount

The fourth stimulus check amount depends on several factors. If passed, it would probably look similar to the previous checks, although that’s not guaranteed.

For reference, the first stimulus check amounted to as much as $1,200, while the second stimulus check brought $600 to eligible Americans. The third stimulus check, which the IRS is still in the process of distributing, is worth up to $1,400 per person, although the eligibility requirements are narrower.

All three checks gave the full amounts to taxpayers who made up to $75,000 a year, according to their most recent tax returns. Couples filing jointly got the full payment if they had a joint total income of $150,000 or less.

With the first two checks, those making up to $99,000 alone or $198,000 as a couple received prorated payments. With the third check, individuals who earned more than $80,000 per year or $160,000 per year as joint filers got nothing. Could Your State Be The Next To Send Out More Stimulus Checks

California announced a budget deal this week that would allocate $8.1 billion for stimulus checks of $500 or $600, plus an additional $500 payment for households with children. This followed an earlier round of $600 payments by the state.

Meanwhile, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis approved a budget that includes provisions for $1,000 direct payments to be made to first responders and teachers.

With federal Covid-19 relief cash in hand and larger-than-expected revenues in the last fiscal year, mores state could follow suit by offering stimulus checks to compliment the federal $1,400 payment that was approved under the American rescue plan.

Which states are offering ‘return to work’ bonuses of up to $2,000?

As the country moves into summer, many unemployed workers in states where federal unemployment benefits will be ending, are wondering how they will make ends meet.

Some states are offering residents a bonus of up to $2,000 for returning to work, coming as a number of Republican-led states announce they are ending federally-funded unemployment programmes.

An estimated 3.7 million people will be affected by the removal of the enhanced benefits which some business owners have blamed for a perceived labour shortage.
