3rd Stimulus Check When Will We Get It

What Do Federal Benefit Recipients Who Dont File Taxes Need To Get Payment

Third stimulus checks: Will we get $1,400 payments in March?

No further action will be needed to receive a direct payment for most beneficiaries of Social Security retirement and disability, railroad retirees and those who received veterans benefits last year. Like the first two rounds of stimulus checks, the new payments will be sent out the same way benefits are normally paid.

But there are instances where some people receiving the automatic third payment based on their federal benefits information will need to file a 2020 tax return, regardless of whether they normally dont file one.

For instance, if your payment doesnt include a check for your qualified dependent, and that person didnt get one, the federal benefits recipient would need to file a 2020 tax return to be considered for the additional payment.

Also, those who are eligible but didnt get the first or second stimulus check or got less than the full amount may need to file a 2020 tax return to be eligible for the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit. More information on that can be found here.

Third Stimulus Checks: Could We Get $1400 Payments In February

WASHINGTON After winning the presidential election, Joe Biden vowed to get Americans a new round of economic relief through $1,400 direct payments. Nearly a month later, we havent seen much movement on his $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief plan that includes those checks for most Americans.

Late last week, Biden urged Congress to take immediate action. On Monday night, the president hosted 10 GOP senators at the White House to discuss their views on relief which would include a smaller direct payment amount targeted to Americans most in need.

Republican were largely upbeat following the two-hour meeting.

It was a very good exchange of views. I wouldnt say we came together on a package tonight. No one expected that in a two-hour meeting but what we did agree to do is follow up and talk further, said Sen. Susan Collins.

The GOP proposal is a much slimmer $618 billion plan with $1,000 in direct payments to individuals earning up to $40,000 a year, or $80,000 for couples, according to a draft obtained by The Associated Press.

Meanwhile, Democrats who lead the Senate and House plan to take first steps this week toward delivering fresh assistance to Americans and businesses.

Thus far, the process has moved slowly as Biden mulled whether to appease Republicans by sacrificing some of his agenda or try to pass as much as possible on a party-line basis through the budget reconciliation process.

What’s Holding Up New Stimulus Checks

Chief among the issues are whether Republican lawmakers would support the package. But with GOP support so far failing to materialize, Democrats are pushing forward with the budget reconciliation process, which would next direct House and Senate committees to discuss spending priorities.

“When Congress colors in the details of the stimulus package, investors should expect some deviation from the original Biden plan, as even a Congress closely in sync with the president will look to put their own imprint on the bill,” Hammond wrote in a February 2 research note.

The plan to provide more direct aid to low- and middle-class households could help lift GDP by 0.7%, although other measures in the bill such as a higher minimum wage and aid to states could boost GDP growth by 1.5%, according to a January 18 report from Oxford Economics Chief U.S. Economist Gregory Daco. He’s predicting a $1.3 trillion stimulus package will be approved before the end of March.

“The additional stimulus will be welcome given the extent of labor market damage, with still 10 million fewer jobs than before the pandemic,” he and Oxford Economics lead U.S. economist Lydia Boussour wrote on January 22.

Here’s what analysts are predicting about the $1,400 checks and other spending proposals.

You Havent Filed Your 2019 Or 2020 Tax Returns

Many people probably havent filed their 2020 tax returns yet, given that the deadline for getting in your tax forms is April 15. In that case, theres no reason to worry the IRS will use your 2019 tax return to determine how much you should receive.

But this becomes trickier for people who arent required to file tax returns, such as those with no or very little earnings, which can be the case for some people on Social Security.

That became an issue with the first round of stimulus checks, especially since many of these people were in deepest need of the first rounds $1,200 payments and it wasnt an insignificant number. The IRS said it distributed more than 22 million stimulus payments last year that werent based on filed tax returns.

Because of that issue, the IRS last year created a website specifically for non-filers, where they could provide their bank account information or addresses to the agency, as well as provide their number of dependents, who were each eligible for $500 in stimulus aid at the time.

But the non-filers website has been closed since late last year, and IRS and Treasury officials said on a March 12 conference call with reporters that they are urging non-filers to file a 2020 tax return to ensure they get all the payments and tax credits they are owed.

These checks will distribute automatically, with no action required for most people. The IRS will use the information in your 2019 tax return to calculate your payment, and use the information in your filing to send or deposit your check. If you havent filed your return for 2019, the IRS will use information from your 2018 tax filing to calculate the payment.

Taxpayers who typically do not file returns will need to submit a simple tax return to receive the economic impact payment. Visit the IRS Non-Filers website to learn more about how to receive payment.

In the event your direct deposit account information changed, either the IRS will mail you a paper check, or you can update your direct deposit information via the Treasury Department.

Child Tax Credit: December End

Some families received another form of stimulus aid when the IRS in July deposited the first of six monthly cash payments into bank accounts of parents who qualify for the Child Tax Credit . Families on average received $423 in their first CTC payment, according to an analysis of Census data from the left-leaning advocacy group Economic Security Project.

Eligible families received up to $1,800 in cash through December, with the money parceled out in equal installments over the six months from July through December. The aid was due to the expanded CTC, which is part of President Joe Bidens American Rescue Plan.

Families who qualify received $300 per month for each child under 6 and $250 for children between 6 to 17 years old. Several families that spoke to CBS MoneyWatch said the extra money would go toward child care, back-to-school supplies and other essentials.

While progressives and some Democrats urged lawmakers to continue the enhanced CTC, it appears stalled at the moment. That means families wont receive a CTC payment in January or beyond.

Is There A Credit For Children

Yes, youll receive an additional $1,400 for each dependent, regardless of their age. That includes not only children but adults who count as dependents. Thats one key difference between the third check and the previous two: The first two payments excluded anyone over age 17 who was listed as a dependent, which meant lots of college students and disabled people didnt qualify.

However, the phaseout of the dependent credit applies at the same rate as the payments for people who file their own tax returns. Whether you have one dependent or 10, if you earn more than the $80,000, $120,000 or $160,000 thresholds listed above, you dont get a dependent credit.

Biden $1400 stimulus: When 3rd stimulus checks will be released

Back in March, President Joe Biden signed into law a massive economic aid bill including a $1,400 stimulus check for more than 100 million households. All signs indicate that third stimulus check will be the final one sent out during this crisis.

But this doesnt mean the IRS is done sending payments: Some taxpayers will be entitled to a check when they file their 2021 tax return next year.

Who gets the check in 2022? Eligible parents who welcomed a newborn into their family during the 2021 calendar year. The $1,400 payments sent out earlier this year were based on 2020 tax returnswhich, of course, didnt include 2021 newborns. Both Fortuneand Insider confirmed earlier this year that a stimulus check would go out to eligible parents of 2021 newborns once they file their tax return next year.

Of course, parents would still need to meet the income requirements. For single filers, that means making no more than $75,000 per year in adjusted gross income, while couples filing jointly could still get the full $1,400 check for each of their 2021 newborns if their income is less than $150,000. Taxpayers earning above those levels would see their checks reduced, however, and theyd be completely phased out if theyre a single-filer earning above $80,000 or a couple filing jointly earning above $160,000.

The Us Federal Government Has Sent Out Three Rounds Of Direct Payments To Americans Over The Pandemic Which Wont Go Away Could A Fourth Happen Next Year

Just when it seems that ground is being gained in the battle against the covid-19 pandemic another setback is experienced. Previous new surges in case numbers pushed lawmakers in Washington to act to help relieve the financial hardship being inflicted on households and the economy.

This led to sweeping legislation that injected massive sums of money into the economy, including three rounds of Economic Impact Payments, or stimulus checks, to around 169 million Americans in the last round. However, the conditions have changed in the nine months since the last stimulus checks for up to $1,400 were approved putting into doubt whether a fourth round could gain traction again.

Who Is Eligible For The Third Stimulus Check

The $1,400-per-person payments will be made to adults, children, and for the first time, adult dependents. So, as Intelligencers Eric Levitz explains, A single mother who cares for a child and a disabled sibling would receive a $4,200 check.

The eligibility standards, however, spurred a serious debate, with Republicans and some moderate Democrats like Joe Manchin complaining that distributing the new check amounts by the old CARES Act formula would wind up benefiting families who are not in need and will not spend the money in a way that will benefit the economy. Following modifications made in both Houses, the legislation will more sharply phase out payments for those with higher incomes.

Heres how much Americans can expect, with eligibility based on 2019 or 2020 income tax data, depending on what the IRS has on hand:

Eligible for the full $1,400 check: Adults who earned $75,000 or less, married couples who earned $150,000 or less, and heads of household who earned $112,500 or less.

Eligible for a reduced check: Adults who earned between $75,000 and $80,000, married couples who earned between $150,000 and $160,000, and heads of household who earned between $112,500 and $120,000.

Not eligible: Adults who earned more than $80,000, married couples who earned more than $160,000, and heads of household who earned more than $120,000

New Payments Differ From Earlier Economic Impact Payments

The third round of stimulus payments, those authorized by the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act, differs from the earlier payments in several respects:

  • The third stimulus payment will be larger for most people. Most families will get $1,400 per person, including all dependents claimed on their tax return. Typically, this means a single person with no dependents will get $1,400, while a family of four will get $5,600.
  • Unlike the first two payments, the third stimulus payment is not restricted to children under 17. Eligible families will get a payment based on all of their qualifying dependents claimed on their return, including older relatives like college students, adults with disabilities, parents and grandparents.

Most will arrive via direct deposit others will be mailed as a paper check or a prepaid debit card.

Exactly how much money you get and how it’s delivered depends on the information provided on your 2020 tax return. If it hasn’t been filed or processed yet, the IRS will look at your 2019 return.

In most cases, your payment will be delivered to the bank account or mailing address that’s listed on your tax return. If you used the nonfilers tool because you don’t file taxes, the IRS will use that same information to deliver your third payment, either to your bank account or address.

Social Security retirement and disability beneficiaries, railroad retirees, and people who received veterans’ benefits in 2020 don’t need to do anything to get the third stimulus check. They will get their payment the same way they normally receive benefits.

The IRS’s “Get My Payment” tool is the only place to check how and when your payment is going to be sent .

Timing Of Third Stimulus Checks

Question: When will I get my third stimulus check?

Answer: Millions of Americans have already received their third stimulus check. And the IRS will be sending out more over the next several weeks. So, if you haven’t received your payment yet , it should arrive relatively soon.

How long it will take to send all payments is not known yet. The IRS has a lot on its plate right now. We’re in the middle of tax return filing season, so the IRS is already busy processing tax returns. The tax agency also has to send refunds for people who reported unemployment compensation on their 2020 return and come up with a way to send periodic child tax credit payments later this year. All of this could very well slow down the processing and delivery of third-round stimulus checks.

If the IRS already has your bank account information either from a recent tax payment that you made, a tax refund it sent you, or some other source then expect to get your third stimulus check faster. That’s because the IRS will be able to directly deposit the payment into your bank account. The IRS can also make a third stimulus payment to a Direct Express debit card account, a U.S. Debit Card account, or other Treasury-sponsored account. Otherwise, you’ll get a paper check in the mail.

If you already have a prepaid debit card from the IRS , you’ll get a new card if the IRS decides to send your third stimulus payment to you in that form.
