3rd Stimulus Check Status Irs

Must read

Where Is Your Payment Being Sent

Stimulus checks start hitting bank accounts

The IRS will issue a check by mail or direct deposit based on the data the agency already has in its systems. Taxpayers will receive their check through their bank account if their direct deposit information is already on file. Otherwise, the payment will be sent by mail.

If that bank account on file is closed or no longer active, the bank will return the deposit and the individual may be issued a check instead.

If The First Two Stimulus Payments Never Showed Up Do This

The IRS is no longer automatically sending out the first and second payments that were approved in 2020. If you believe you’re still owed money from either of those payment rounds, your best chance of claiming those funds is to file for the Recovery Rebate Credit as part of the 2020 tax season.

If you’re eligible, you’ll need to know the amount of money the IRS allotted you, which you can find out online or from the letter the agency mailed. The IRS said the updated Get My Payment tracker won’t give you information on the first and second checks. Instead, you need to set up and check your IRS account for information on those payments.

Im Not A Us Citizen Will I Be Eligible For A Stimulus Payment

You may be eligible. Much like the last round of stimulus payments, if you have a Social Security number, theres a good chance you fall into one of the classifications for immigrants who qualify for a payment.

If you do not have a Social Security number but your spouse is an active duty military member, you may still receive the full $2,800 .

Stimulus Eip Debit Cards

In addition to checks, you might get an EIP debit card rather than a paper check. If thats the case, you will wait for quite a while. The first EIP debit cards will be sent on March 29. However, same as the other dates mentioned, you might wait for longer than that. So its wise to check the status of your third Economic Impact Payment regardless of how youre going to receive it.

Who Qualifies For Stimulus Checks

IRS: Wednesday is official payment date for stimulus checks

U.S. citizens or permanent residents are generally eligible for the full amount provided they are not dependent on another taxpayer and have a valid Social Security number if their adjusted gross incomes dont exceed certain amounts. Those levels differ somewhat from the first two checks, so not everyone who qualified for those them will get the third one.

The eligibility amounts are as follows:

  • $75,000 for individuals
  • $112,500 for those filing as head of household
  • $150,000 for married couples who file a joint return, or those filing as a qualifying widow or widower

Once that threshold is met, taxpayers may still be eligible to receive reduced amounts. But the stimulus checks phase out entirely for those whose adjusted gross income is over the following amounts:

  • $80,000 for individuals
  • $120,000 for those filing as head of household
  • $160,000 for married couples filing jointly, or those filing as a qualifying widow or widower

The Irs Tool Might Say Your Payment Was Sent To You

If the IRS’ online tool says the agency has issued your stimulus money, but you have no record of it in your bank account and it never arrived in your mailbox, you may need to take one of these steps, including possibly filing a stimulus check payment trace. You’ll need to have the letter the IRS sent you.

A Paper Check Or Debit Card Was Sent

If you did not receive a direct deposit and instead are waiting on a paper check or debit card, it’s possible that it got mixed up in the mail or even accidentally discarded in the trash.

You can use the IRS tool to track your payment and see if it may have been sent out already.

If it was previously sent but you’ve not received it, you do have options to retrieve the funds.

If you used the IRS online tool and it says your stimulus check has been sent to you, but you didnât receive it, you can request a Payment Trace.

Call the IRS on 800-919-9835 or send a completed Form 3911 in the mail to start the process.

Who Is Eligible For The Third Economic Impact Payment And What Incomes Qualify

Generally, if you are a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien, you are eligible for the full amount of the third Economic Impact Payment if you are not a dependent of another taxpayer and have a valid Social Security number and your adjusted gross income on their tax return does not exceed:

  • $150,000 if married and filing a joint return or if filing as a qualifying widow or widower
  • $112,500 if filing as head of household or
  • $75,000 for eligible individuals using any other filing statuses, such as single filers and married people filing separate returns.

Payments will be phased out or reduced — above those AGI amounts. This means taxpayers will not receive a third payment if their AGI exceeds:

  • $160,000 if married and filing a joint return or if filing as a qualifying widow or widower
  • $120,000 if filing as head of household or
  • $80,000 for eligible individuals using other filing statuses, such as single filers and married people filing separate returns.

For example, a single person with no dependents and an AGI of $77,500 will normally get a $700 payment . A married couple with two dependents and an AGI of $155,000 will generally get a payment of $2,800 . Filers with incomes of at least $80,000 , $120,000 and $160,000 will get no payment based on the law.

Third stimulus check questions: IRS still processing payments, more payments to hit accounts

According to the IRS FAQ, a Need More Information message in the Get My Payment tool means your payment was returned because the US Postal Service wasn’t able to deliver it.

The FAQ says you’ll be able to have your payment reissued as a direct deposit by providing a bank routing and account number, a prepaid debit card or a financial service account that has a routing and account number associated with it. The FAQ says you can also update your mailing address to receive your payment.

How Are Americans Using Stimulus Checks

What Time Does Stimulus Check Deposit

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York says that households are spending a smaller percentage of their stimulus checks and saving more. The that households set aside just under 25% of their third-round payments for consumption. This share fell from just over 29% of first-round payments reported in June 2020 and almost 26% of second-round payments reported in January 2021.

The table below is based on all three SCE surveys and breaks down the average percentage of stimulus payments spent, saved and used to pay off debt:

New York Fed SCE Breakdown of Stimulus Check Spending
Payment Round
37.4% 33.7%

The New York Fed also says that households expect to spend an average 13% of the third stimulus check on essential items and an average 8% on non-essential items.

For a comparison, preliminary data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau from shows that the majority of stimulus recipients are almost three times more likely to use checks to pay down debt than add to their savings.

An earlier showed that the majority of recipients who got the first stimulus check spent their payment on household expenses. Adults with incomes between $75,000 and $99,999 told the Census that they would most likely pay off debt or add to their savings. While adults making less than $25,000 said they would use their stimulus to pay for expenses.

For those households that spent their first stimulus checks, the study says:

How Are Married Couples Affected If Only One Spouse Has A Social Security Number

As with EIP2, joint filers where only one spouse has a Social Security number will normally get the third payment. This means that these families will now get a payment covering any family member who has a work-eligible SSN.

For taxpayers who file jointly with their spouse and only one individual has a valid SSN, the spouse with a valid SSN will receive up to a $1,400 third payment and up to $1,400 for each qualifying dependent claimed on the 2020 tax return.

Active Military: If either spouse is an active member of the U.S. Armed Forces at any time during the taxable year, only one spouse needs to have a valid SSN for the couple to receive up to $2,800 for themselves in the third stimulus payment.

Why Is The Irs Sending Me Letter 6475

“The Economic Impact Payment letters include important information that can help people quickly and accurately file their tax return,” the IRS said in a January release, including personal information — like your name and address — and the total amount sent in your third stimulus payment.

This could include “plus-up” payments, the additional funds the IRS sent to people who were eligible for a larger amount based on their 2019 or 2020 tax returns, or information received from the Social Security Administration, Department of Veterans’ Affairs or the Railroad Retirement Board.

You may have already received a Letter 1444-C, which showed the amount you were paid and how it was delivered, but that’s not what you want to use to prepare your 2021 return.

What If I Didn’t Get The Right Amount

Third stimulus check update: Latest timeline for $1,400 payments in bank accounts

Some people may get their checks quickly, yet discover the payment amount is incorrect that could be due to their dependents or changes in income.

The law provides $1,400 per adult and dependent, as long as the household income falls below the income threshold for eligibility. In the current bill, single people whose adjusted gross income was below $75,000 and married couples with income below $150,000 will receive their full payments, as well as their dependents. Payments decline for earnings above that, cutting off entirely for single people earning $80,000 and $160,000 for married couples.

But some people may not get the right amount, especially if they haven’t yet filed their 2020 tax returns, given that the IRS extended the tax deadline until May 17. For instance, if a family had a baby last year but hasn’t yet filed their 2020 returns, the IRS would base their payments on their 2019 returns which wouldn’t include their new baby. In that case, the family would receive $2,800 for themselves, but not the extra $1,400 for their child.

For instance, the most recent batch of checks issued this week include “plus-up” payments for people who received checks based on their 2019 tax returns but who have since filed their 2020 tax returns and are owed more. The agency said such extra payments could reflect a loss of income in 2020, which could entitle the tax filers to more stimulus money, or if they had a child last year.

What Do Federal Benefit Recipients Who Dont File Taxes Need To Get Payment

No further action will be needed to receive a direct payment for most beneficiaries of Social Security retirement and disability, railroad retirees and those who received veterans benefits last year. Like the first two rounds of stimulus checks, the new payments will be sent out the same way benefits are normally paid.

But there are instances where some people receiving the automatic third payment based on their federal benefits information will need to file a 2020 tax return, regardless of whether they normally dont file one.

For instance, if your payment doesnt include a check for your qualified dependent, and that person didnt get one, the federal benefits recipient would need to file a 2020 tax return to be considered for the additional payment.

Also, those who are eligible but didnt get the first or second stimulus check or got less than the full amount may need to file a 2020 tax return to be eligible for the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit. More information on that can be found here.

What Kind Of Messages Can It Display

If the portal is unable to determine whether or not you are eligible for the check, or if you are completely ineligible, you may receive an error message.

If the Get My Payment tool gives you a payment date but you still haven’t received your money, the IRS may need more details from you. The error could also indicate that your check has been returned because the post office was unable to deliver it.

After the IRS starts sending checks, the online tool may let you enter your banking information to receive your payment straight to your bank account, as it did with the first payment, or it may hold your payment until it receives a current mailing address.

Payment Status‘ will show you the date your payment was processed and will tell you if you will receive funds via direct deposit or in the mail. If the tool says that you are eligible for a payment, but there is no date shown, that means that the IRS hasn’t processed your payment yet. It does not mean that you won’t receive one – you will just get it in a future wave of payments.

Payment Status Not Available‘ means the IRS either hasn’t yet determined your eligibility or that you’re not eligible at all.

Need More Information‘ means one of the two things: Either the IRS does not have your account information and your payment hasn’t been processed yet, or the postal service was unable to deliver your payment and it was returned to the IRS.
